Is it possible to ignore an entire social group?

there is one social group that I too find particularly offensive.... luckily the vast majority of those threads are started by the same person....so I just ignore the few specific people that start ALL their threads....problem fixed

Thought you had a great idea here. So, I also tried to use the "ignore" feature for the person who is most prolific in the offensive posts. Unfortunately that isn't possible because that same person is a "moderator/admin"...and apparently is exempt from being ignored. That's unfortunate.

I tried the same thing and got the same results, which is unfortunate since I like the lounge and outside forums coming up under new posts, since I sometimes come across threads I find interesting that I never would have came across otherwise. Oh well, if blocking them all is the only way to get these other "certain threads" off new posts, I'm for it.

OH her...yeah she's a moderator of that specific group....
funnily though most of the offensive posts don't come from her there....
yeah I know I was curious...I peaked...after all they were private before the board change....and she could boot people...now she can't so I suppose it's morbid curiosity to peak in every so often and shake my head in disgust...

Well that's what I thought. I thought I could still block her as an individual as she is just the moderator of that "specific" private group. But I am unable to do so officially...and I absolutely do not understand why. I tried. Perhaps it is because those posts are now showing up on the open forum page. Not sure.

I did manage to block the posts of the most egregious member of that group (woof-woof). At least I think it worked. You are correct, others are actually more offensive then the moderator. But most of the threads are started by the moderator...so I thought I could at least get rid of most of the posts that way. Had there not been so many posts, I could have easily ignored the whole thing. But the sheer number made it to hard to turn a blind eye.

Hey, I "peeked" too...At first, I thought it was just a spoof. LOL. It actually took me awhile before I realized they were for real. Geez, I got out of there fast after that. It was scary.

what I find scary and somewhat funny in a sad way is that for the most part we all know which group several people like you and I are refering to as offensive without it actually being said...

I don't know why I hadn't tried this before, but if you're up for some URL munging, you can create your own "New Posts" link and bookmark it. If you look at the status bar of your browser while you hover the mouse pointer over the "New Posts" and "New Supplier Posts" in the light blue nav bar, you'll see that one is of the form search.php?do=getnew&exclude= (that's new posts, excluding supplier forums) and the other is of the form search.php?do=getnew&include= (that's including just the supplier forums). So, you could modify the list of forum numbers to your taste. This isn't difficult, but it is tedious. If you go to the 1st page for any forum, you can view the source and find a string of the form 'var RELPATH = "forumdisplay.php?f=nnn"', where 'nnn' is the forum number.

At the risk of getting flamed, there is something I feel that I have to say.

We are a large and diverse group on this forum, I have no doubt there is a thread or sub-forum that some member finds distasteful, boring, offensive, etc. However, it seems very impractical to me, to exclude some forums or threads, from the Today's Posts link, because some members don't like them. I do believe that could also set a dangerous precedent, the forum cannot be tailored to suit every individual's likes and dislikes.

I think that we all should just learn to accept that there are places on the ECF, that some of us don't want to go to, but that other members thrive on. It's easy enough to just skip over the posts that we are not interested in and focus on the ones that we are interested it.

Ok, I have said my piece, that is all.
