maybe you guys have seen the advertising banners while perusing these ECF forums? I know Volcano sells their stuff for more than other dealers but they are offering the chrome for an additional 10 bucks; unlike other vendors, I think you get a one year warranty on their products.

I went to their forum to check out the situation but I couldn't discern if this is SS like the one Apollo has been touting for the longest. Here's a link with extensive pics. Can anyone tell me if this is indeed stainless steel?

Yeah plating will wear off depending on how well it's done. That's why it's best to wait until the price drops then when it wears you can just buy a new one..you could also keep the worn one and paint or wrap it. I already am seeing one that's just the tube for $59.95 here The Varitube Mod SS (chrome) | MODS | iVAPE..another month or so when the market is flooded they will probably be quite a bit less :)

If I had a choice, I'd go with stainless as well. Most of my mods are stainless with a couple chrome plated aluminum. Both types still look like new but I baby my mods. I have scratched and/or dropped two of my stainless mods and after a few minutes of buffing, you wouldn't be able to tell. All but a few of my mods are mechanical though. I doubt the lava tube electronics would survive the heat of buffing out any major drop damage or big scratches.

That said, I wouldn't see much problem owning either type (stainless vs chrome) since any serious cosmetic damage would be equally irreparable. The stainless, which I ordered, would at least be able to survive minor scratches with a light buff to keep it looking like new.

I've been wondering how hard it would be to disassemble like a red one and a black one and swap the button/caps

From what I've been reading the top cap is glued in..the older one was threaded in (different top cap too)..I'm not sure if these are threaded in and glues or just thread locked. If it's glued it probably could be warmed up so the cap will come off..same with thread lock..but because of the plastic cap you couldn't heat it too much. I've heard it's difficult but if it was built there is a way to dissemble it usually and once it's figured out it probably won't be all that hard.

I don't want to buy one to dissemble but if it ever has an issue I will pull it apart and fix it if it's fixable. I suspect that won't be for awhile though..even my eGo's from last summer still work good so unless the switch fails or I drop it hard it might be until next year or longer before I would pull one apart.

Has anyone actually had an issue, besides fingerprints, with the chrome Lavatube. Does anyone know how good or bad the chroming job actually is? Chrome is an incredibly durable finish, and not that expensive to do decently. In my business, I rehab old chrome and nickel plated razors. Some of them are 50-100 years old and it never ceases to amaze me how I can take a 75 year old razor and, in an hour or so, make it look brand new. I realize that things today aren't built like they were 50 years ago, but jeeze.. , these are razors that initially sold for a dollar or two and their finish is nearly indestructible after decades of moisture and neglect. People didn't polish or wax their old razors. I developed a new respect for chrome working on these things, and I have to wonder if it's even possible to plate something so poorly that it'll wear off in a few years.
