Is there a point anymore? Why isn't everything 510?

Two weeks ago I went out to see a friends band play at a bar. Several of my friends were there. A few of them had e-cigs, which surprised me. But they were all the disposable kind bought from a gas station or smoke shop. They bought them specifically for the bar that night and even then were stepping outside a few times to have an analog. In fact I hardly saw any of them actually vape on the things and I don't blame them. They're not enough to satisfy a smoker.

This lead me to wonder what the point is. I've been to several smoke shops and gas stations around town and never have I seen a 510 or an eGo kit being sold. Why not? Last I looked at Alibaba none of these 510 or eGo kits were that much more expensive then this cheaper crap. So why are all the brick and mortar stores peddling these garbage e-cigs that obviously don't have as good of a success rate? Even smoke shops where you'd think they'd be informed are trying to sell you garbage.

In one situation I walked into a local smoke shop and asked the guy there if he sold 510 atty's and he had no clue what I was talking about. He whipped out some Smoking Everywhere knockoff and I was like "No, I'm looking for the good stuff." He replied "This is originally a $500 model." To which I replied "Don't BS me, I've seen that model sold in bulk on Alibaba for $15 bucks a kit. I'm looking for the good stuff, the 510 stuff."

I don't know about the rest of you guys but my girlfriend and I spend a ton of money each month on vaping. Just as much or more than I did as a smoker. So you think these stores would get a clue and realize there is money to be made selling, kits, mods, parts, juice and accessories.

I haven't done any statistics but it seems to me that the 510 system is THE standard to which all others are compared. So why don't all the other manufacturers just stop manufacturing all the other models and focus their efforts on the 510 system? There is enough variety and evolution in the 510 system alone to satisfy any smoker or vaper.

It just seems to me that standardizing on one system would be better for everyone. It would be less confusing to new vapors, it would force misinformed local vendors into selling good products or at least products that are compatible with good products and it give manufacturers a standard to work off of and evolve.

I am really not so sure 510 is as represented in the market as it is on ECF. I would love to see some sales data but when I see most ecigs in pop culture it looks more like a mini automatic (for instance in the tourist movie and on David Letterman).

Most non vapers I have talked to have seen the analog look-a-likes but few have even heard of an "ego" type device. Down here we have kr808's (smoketip brand) in some gas stations and njoy in others. I have no problem with kr808's though I still believe that if vaping goes mainstream it will be based on a disposable cheap cartomizer system.

That being said I drip all the time, I use atomizers..cartomizers that I self fill...whatever, but I know it turns some people of the complexity of it all.

Standardization of a new technology is a tough battle to fight. (I'm glad Blu-Ray won that battle).
And glad cassette ended up beating 8-Track (but, I age myself, LOL)

For what it's worth, there are other atomizers out there which a lot of people enjoy ... 801,901, et al.

There are 510 adapters for lots of different atomizers. But, who would choose to use an adapter if avoidable?
My local brick & mortar stocks Joye eGo, among other decent PVs.
I haven't visited the local big mall in years ... why would anyone go there?

Market demand will sort it all out. Takes a little time, that's all.

I agree. But even and KR8 seems a tad pointless these days now that cartomizers are available for the 510. I'd love to see more variety of colors for 510 cartos and there is nothing stopping manufacturers from building KR8 batteries with 510 threading as the new standard cig-sized batteries.

For one thing the 510 has very fine threads they will strip much easier and it requires 2x the amount of turns to put them on ! , 2nd the 510 tastes like azz ! IMO a 901 or 808 is a better design .

So what you are saying is that we should only be able to drive Fords right ?? J/K making a point !

Variety is the spice of life !

FAUXPUFF: You're an old timer. You've got miles of experience beyond almost everyone on ECF, my hat is off to you and I only wish I'd discovered vaping when you did. I've now got several models and atomizers in use, including my first love, the KR808D-1. Even with big battery mods in my arsenal, I still find the old standby to have a place in my life.

I have to add that yes, variety is the spice of life. I kind of like that there are many different systems and models to choose from.

I do think, however, that the 510 threading is superior, as I like the female end being on the battery and not the other way around like other models. Seems to help curb leaks somewhat, at least the minor leaks. Most of the mods I see are built with 510 threads exclusively or as one of many options. A standardized threading would go a long way to letting people try lots of different options without buying a whole new kit every month. Adapters are useful, but I'm afraid they probably add unnecessary resistance to the circuit. I'd LOVE to see a KR808 battery and cartos made with 510 threads.

I think the problem the OP points to is the lack of availability of decent local supplies. In my city I know of only 3 places that sell pv's. All of those places sell crappy, overpriced products that will undoubtedly turn the potential customer off. I think the problem that comes into play is the risk entrepreneurs would be taking in opening up a shop in today's market. They are still relatively new products whose legality is being questioned. It would be a bit risky to invest in a business where politics could eventually put you out of business. Personally, I wish I had the financial means to open up a brick and mortar shop in my town. I can't help but feel the time is right.

So far as I know, there's only one respectible shop in my town. Some of the convenience stores and gasoline stations sell the crappy stuff you refer to. Time isn't something I've go an abundance of. But, I want to take the time to walk into one of those places with my Precise 18650 in hand, and ask to see what they've got ... just for the Crocodile Dundee moment, "That's not a PV, THIS is a PV" LOL

Let's keep things in perspective here. When someone decides to try an e-cig they are likely to pick one up at a convenience store (this is where many buy their cigarettes). This product will likely be an RN4081/nJoy/nPro. They won't know what the hell they're doing. They'll do it wrong and think it "sucks". The 4081 is what I, and many people around me, started on. It didn't take our group long to figure out what made these things tick and how to make them work well...hell, I still have a pair and they work awesome.

Additionally, and I've said this before, basing "research" on what you read here on ECF is greatly insufficient. Latest published numbers are between 20,000 and 30,000 new people trying an e-cig a week. Yes....a week. There are roughly 50,000 ECF members total and roughly 7,000 active members. A drop in the bucket. nJoy and Smoking Everywhere are currently the largest e-cig distributors and the majority of new vapers will be buying their products simply because they are everywhere, for the moment anyway. Since these are people who are completely new there will be a lot of user error to account for. Generalizing that an nJoy is crap, for example, is just poor judgement, especially if you've never used one. And these 'opinions' tend to spread like wildfire around here. Give a 4081 to an experienced vaper and they'll make it work beautifully. Give a complete noob a high-end, highly rated, high priced mod, with little to no instruction, and chances are they'll "do it wrong" and think it sucks.

I've never used an nJoy. I DO work with a woman who received one as a Christmas present in 2009. Do I need to say, she was seen with it in public for a couple days and still smokes cigarettes, a year later?

On the other hand... I think there's a lot to be said for crap e-cigs. That's how I was indoctrinated. I bought into one of those Free Offers. Having second thoughts, I went Googling, and ended up in ECF land, where I was headed in the right direction. I know for a fact my story is not unique. Lots of folks buy cheap crap, and the seek out the real deal. But, that's not an endorsement of cheap crap. They just are enough of an enticement to get people looking for something better.

I agree, and the O.P saying what's the point of 808 when the 510 has cartomizers aswell now, well just look at the battery life of an 808 compared to 510, it trumps it easy.

510 regular - 180mah

808 regular - 280mah

----------------------

510 mega - 280mah

808 XL / mega - 380mah

I also prefer the draw on the Boge 808 cartos to anything else, especially in AVS on GGTS.
