personally I'm finding my savings to not be as good as I thought initially because of all the fun stuff to buy for vaping.... and then getting into DIY is not cheap to begin with.

Doing full blown DIY is not cheap to start, but you can make a cheap start to DIY liquid by just buying high strength liquid, and diluting it with glycerin from the pharmacy; better yet if you have a source for PG as well.

lol right on. I feel kinda stupid now. Seems such a simple answer.

That reminds me when I got around to asking what the heck is a B&M ( I thought it must stand for something like Barnes and Mobles! or some such chain store).

B&M = Brink and Mortar. (Mean actual shop/store as opposed to an online store)

Yeah that one had me wondering for a while too.

The amount of money I will be saving by making this switch will be absolutely insane.

Careful about making that statement! I think several of us have made it before and ended up becoming hobbyists who have to try any and everything that catches our fancy!

Welcome, by the way, and best of luck ditching those cancer sticks. Even if you do end up dropping every dime you save on cigarettes into the myriad of eCig accessories there are to choose from, it's still worth it.

True. And I'm sure there are some super fancy bits 'n pieces out there, but at least you're not spending money slowly destroying your body ;)

I think my best bet would be to look for a starter kit of some kind. Any specific companies/brands/websites I should be looking out for?

Edit - Just saw your link. That is exactly what I'm looking for to start with!

That is the kit I started with, and I smoked heavily for over 40 years. I have not smoked since the day I started using it.:)

As for size, it really isn't an issue for me so I'm sure my options there are vast. I think I'd probably start with a replaceable battery at first as well.

If you are wanting a replaceable battery and size isn't an issue you might want to get one of the relatively inexpensive Chinese 3–15 watt VV/VW (variable voltage/variable wattage) models such as the VAMO, Innokin SVD or Sigelei VMAX. They all pretty much use the same chip set and have the similar build quality so pick on the basis of features. The VAMO has the easiest to use menu system.

Stick with the VW mode to start out because the electronics in the device will keep the temperature of the vape the same if you use juice delivery devices with different resistances (oHms).

Stay away from kits that include no name batteries and chargers or anything with "fire" in the name. The type of batteries used for vaping can do very nasty things if things go awry so its very much worth getting decent chargers and batteries.

Nitecore, XTAR or Pila are all good charger choices. Do not charge batteries unattended. AW IMR 1600mAh, Panasonic NCR18650PD 2900 mAh, Panasonic NCR18650PF 2900mAh and Orbtronics 18650 2900mAh are all good battery choices for the 15 watt.

All that said, you might want to give some serious consideration to the Innokin iTaste MVP 2.0 which doesn't have a replaceable battery and has an upper limit of 11 watts, more than ample power for the majority of vapers. The battery 2600mAh with passthrough capability. You would not have to fool with chasing down chargers and batteries.

Flavor wise, I'm up for trying anything! I was told about a peanut butter & jelly flavor that is supposed to be very good and I'd definitely want to give that a shot.

Peanut butter flavoring is listed by listed by OSHA as containing diacetyl which is responsible for popcorn lung. Even diacetyl substitute flavorings can produce some diacetyl.

Some people vape flavors using diacetyl or its substitutes feeling the risk is worth it. However, you might want to study the issue before deciding for yourself. Sadly, one can not rely on all vendors to disclose the use of diacetyl or its substitutes.

This is excellent information, reading through it now. I ended up ordering that other kit from earlier in the thread as well as a few different flavors, including cherry cola, mango and blueberry. Is there any important information on berry/fruit flavors that I should be aware of as well?

I had to edit out the urls as it wouldn't let me post with links embedded.

I order from a vendor that is picky about safety and tests flavors for nasties so I don't keep up as well as many others about flavor safety. There are very knowledgeable people about that on the DIY sub-forum. You now have five posts so you can post there now.

Hi Dee. You have no reason to feel stupid at all. There is a lot of stuff to absorb here but you'll figure it out. There's a learning curve with e-cigs and everyone here has been in your shoes. A month ago when I found this site I was looking for e-cig info. I wanted to find something better than ciga-likes. I had NO clue what most of these girls and guys were talking about. It was like trying to learn something new in a foreign language. Lots of abbreviations and slang is tossed around here because it's much quicker to type LR than it is to type Low Resistance. The good news is that if you keep reading posts and asking questions you'll quickly get the hang of all the unfamiliar terms and what they mean. There is no shortage of friendly helpful members that are happy to answer questions and share their knowledge with others.

Hi. I'm brand new to this too! I ordered the Kanger evod kits for both hubby and myself and they are working well. We wanted something fairly simple and easy to use but that would work well. This was just this past Friday and I haven't had a cigarette since I got mine (smoked a pack and a half a day for 30+ years!) Hubby is down from 2 PAD to about 3 or 4 cigs a day. It's been like a miracle to both of us... truly.

One bit of advice though: I wouldn't recommend anything from a gas station.

Well, I've found they're the best places to buy gasoline..... ;-)

Valnoth, now that you have 5 posts you can go over to the Canada forum; there's a thread there where you can request a list of Canadian vendors.

For a battery, I would recommend an MVP as a great general-purpose unit. It's an internal battery, but that means you don't need to mess with battery chargers, and a bunch of other battery hassles. And you won't find yourself constantly having to recharge it.

You might want to start with an EVOD or CE4/CE5/CE6-style head. While these may not be the best performance-wise, they're very easy to use and give a good vape.

If you can find a B+M nearby that has a tasting bar, that will go a long way towards getting liquids you like.

Have fun!

There's a glass version of the evod! Looks like the mouthpiece can be changed too.
