Alcohol is a mood altering drug that depending on your consumption affects motor skills, speech, Judgment, inhibitions, Intensify emotions, Vaping inhibits your vision for about 2 seconds if you blow a big enough cloud in front of your eyes.
One is nothing like the other.

If you're vaping with respect then what I said wasn't directed at you.

The way your question was worded, I feel it was directed at the likes of me. I am in the camp of vaping wherever I want, but not whenever I want. This sort of discussion usually brings up places that it is never good to vape at. I enjoy stating that a hospital is one of the best indoor places to vape in, because a) it is true in my experience and b) it is the type of place that I think most people (non-vapers) would think that is obvious place not to vape. But, I would think it would have to be someone that doesn't understand just how little vaping lingers to say that. Thus, there is no 'obvious place' for me not to vape, while there is obvious times that for me, personally, I wouldn't vape. And that would include, at times, a vape shop. Yes, I'm being serious. It could theoretically include my own home and my own car.

But your question, for me, was really about the 'can't you wait' aspect, rather than the 'must you do it here (in this place) question?

And as one who has vaped in a grocery store aisle, I can tell you that yes, I can wait. But sometimes, I choose not to. From my cold turkey experience(s), I get what it means to wait, and to not do it at all. Though, I think that is missing a few points of honest consideration, and seemingly is downplaying the whole aspect of, "I can vape in this space with respect, common courtesy." Hence, a hospital is a very good place to vape. A hospital room where surgery is being performed, not so great. A hospital floor where you encounter zero people over course of 30 seconds or more, is very good place to vape.

I'm not anti-vaping in any way shape or form, and the point about not vaping in one's home carries about as much weight as the straw it is stuffed with.

IMO, it carries slightly more weight than the point of "don't vape where you can't smoke."

All I'm saying is that in a community of social creatures it is worthwhile to consider the feelings/opinions of others even if they are wrong about their fundamental assumptions. There are a lot more of them than there are of you, and you are likely to get more of what you want by being considerate than by freaking them out.

Agreed.

If I were in type of mood to confront guy vaping in grocery aisle with people around, I'd wish to be equally considerate of his feelings as those around him. I'd seek to listen as best I could and understand where this person is coming from, and then offer my thoughts.

Of all the times I've vaped in public, I haven't been confronted. Sometimes I think how drastic that sort of confrontation could be, but most of time I realize it would likely be very short and I'd probably acquiesce in way to appease their concerns which I think would be rather superficial. IOW, I'd come off fairly polite and not all that confrontational, unless they were wanting to debate. Then, I'd probably have some pity on them for how under-prepared I would imagine them to be.

I really don't understand the need to go to tribal extremes in this discussion. The 'us vs. them' hard line mentality probably isn't the best strategy when one is in the minority. Then again you can take the shortcut around democracy and society and just hop in bed with big tobacco. I'm sure they'll have no trouble paying off enough politicians to keep vaping around... The way they want it.

To me, this discussion is about ANTZ vs. us, and I have honest realization that ANTZ is within us / me, to some degree. But our version of ANTZ manifests as something akin to 'smoker's guilt' which is part of ANTZ rhetoric ingrained in the culture.

To me, ANTZ are clearly in the minority. Non-vapers, seemingly have very little to no issue with public vaping in my umpteen dozen experiences. ANTZ of the full blown variety not only take issue with public vaping, but as I understand their game plan, it is one of 3 to 5 key pillars to knock down toward the end goal of eradicating nicotine users from society.

OOO but they are reinforcing that you should have to sneak like we are doing something wrong
I stealth vape in most of the places that I vape in public.
Because I live in California, and vaping is already not allowed in most of the places that I vape.

Since we're at the vaping confessions stage, I'm proud to report that these days I vape about 4 times per day, morning coffee, lunch break and evening. With a vaporshark set at 8W and a nautilus. Or a kayfun4 at 10w. Unflavoured or very diluted menthol. For the rest of the time I carry nic gum for peace of mind.

Know thy enemy before accusing.

Not in anyway comparing the mood altering aspects. Trying to point out two legal products, when used in moderation have no adverse effects to the surrounding public. However, when used to extreme do begin to become a nuisance to the public. It's hard to define that "extreme" line, so it is easy for authorities to bail and just ban it.

If I remember correctly, the only person complaining about a vaper in the OP's story, was the OP.

None of the other shoppers complained, apparently, only the OP to her mother. The OP was even offended that this person had their PV, carrying it out in the open. Really? Just because a vaper open carries their PV we are to be offended? The nerve!
I was not "complaining", just stating what I had seen, I was not offended that they had or were using their device. I just thought it was a tad rediculous where and how they chose to use it. Pretty sure everyone on this site enjoys vaping and would like to continue doing so, and with people like this it's going to get harder and harder. I am also of the Male gender and sexual orientation for anyone who may have seen the above post. I'm pretty sure any one of us would be sitting in front of their (insert electronic device here) typing away spitting and sputtering if someone had been walking through the same store Smoking (cigarette, cigar, pipe), but since it's not smoke, none if us have a problem with it. Puff away. Vaping is a safer alternative to smoking and should be treated as such. Not a God given right to blow clouds anywhere we choose. Yes it smells better, and causes no harm to those around us, but some people choose not to do it and I respect that. I don't vape in stores because I could never smoke there, and would never have even if I could. I never really "enjoyed" smoking, and didn't go into stores smelling like an ashtray with legs out of respect for others. I don't vape in stores for the same reason, respect for others and their choices. If somebody was to come up to my car while I was vaping in the parking lot with the windows up and complain, I would tell them to go bother the group of smokers huddled right outside the door. I'm in my own vehicle, they can't smell it, and it isn't harming anyone, myself included :)

Behavior of a few effects all given the target is questionable. In others words, "nip it in the bud" is considered a viable option.
But what they are "nipping in the bud" is a false premise, based on lies, so we need to fight against said nipping

Well some bikers with modified mufflers can be of great nuisance yet we don't ban motorcycles. Same with stereos etc. Why would that be. Hint: Check BATF. What do alcohol, tobacco and guns have in common to be joined under the same umbrella?

Okay, so the parts in red are what I'm responding to, and the parts in blue had me confused. I could reread those another 3 times and still not be sure what you meant exactly. Though the last one is easier to understand, but just wondering why if your windows are up, are you talking to people outside of your car?

Anyway, in OP, you did say:

but I was a little disgusted- not at the vapor, which smelled like vanilla or something as we walked through it, but that he didn't even try to hide it. I mentioned to my Mom a few minutes later that "those" kind of people are going to ruin it for everybody.

That reads a lot like a complaint. And is really more on you at this point than the person that none of us get to examine why they did what they did, except through your perspective (of disgust). So, for anyone to say this thread is only about irresponsible vapers is, IMO, mistaken. It's far more about this notion that vaping indoors, in public places is disgusting to anyone, and then how those who claim to be disgusted by it, not due to the actual vapor, are people (or vapers) who think this is the reason vaping will be banned in public. That seems to routinely deny the existence of ANTZ while also simultaneously spouting ANTZ rhetoric. Why is it so hard to admit this is ANTZ rhetoric? I've already stated in this thread that I realize I have portions of ANTZ within me, so not looking to play a blame game in which I have no part of. To not acknowledge this strikes me as arguably more irresponsible than the physical manifestation of vapor in public areas.

The part of, I don't vape in stores, because I could never smoke there is on the ridiculous side of things. Fact is, people at one point likely could smoke there, and likely weren't being faced daily by public scrutiny, but instead lived in a shared reality where everyone was more cordial to each other, like all the way around. Almost everything about 'smoking in public' comes off to me today, as manipulation / deception. Feel (very) free to bring science into this discussion, as I'll feel very free to scrutinize that, and likely poke holes in it left and right. Once the whole smoke thing is taken down a few notches, which I consider rather easy to do, then the thing we all acknowledge as 'far less harmful than smoking' is easier to establish why it really ought to not be a big deal to do in indoor public places. And to the degree that it is still problematic to make that case, then I feel confident that I can use the exact same points for why it isn't so okay to vape outdoors. But far more to the point is that vaping (or vapor) is not smoking (or smoke), so it makes about as much sense as say I wouldn't shop in places where I was allowed to smoke. Because, ya know, shopping and smoking are about the same thing, since both words end in "ing." As a fellow vaper, I really think you need to do a better job as to why smoking and vaping are put in the same category, or face scrutiny such as this, that isn't so shy about confronting the ANTZ rhetoric that is seemingly ingrained in vast majority of us.
