Johnny Depp uses e-cigarette in new movie "The Tourist"
Interview With Johnny Depp About Angelina Jolie, The Tourist

Anyone know when this movie begins playing at movie theatres?

If it happens in next week or two, it could have huge impact on e-cig sales and public support (depending upon how and how often his use of e-cigarettes is portrayed).

From the paragraph that mentions the e-cigarette (next to last), it seems maybe that it may provide him with a signal to return to sanity? Hard to tell what he means by "The electronic cigarette was the device that would ring the alarm that he's in panic mode." Guess I'll go out to the theater & see it.

If the e-cig is used as a prominent prop for the first time in this movie, you can bet other directors will be featuring them as well. Nobody can promote better than Hollyweird in our image based society. They did it with analogs in decades past, now this movie could be picking up on perhaps the biggest trend in western culture today. Smart move!!

"Your character in this movie is not Johnny Depp cool; how did you figure out what you wanted to do with this character?
JD: The idea was to make him really the everyman of the movie, the math teacher who doesn't have particular highs or particular lows in his life and has a slight amount of OCD in his weird routines. [I wanted to] take this normal guy and put him in these high-stakes situations that were less than normal. The electronic cigarette was the device that would ring the alarm that he's in panic mode."

That doesnt sound promising to me...an OCD math teacher, whos e-cig is a signal he has issues  Joy...

Just watched the movie trailer and there's a brief snip of Depp walking across a crowded plaza, apparently smoking a cigarette. Now, if he's using an PV in this scene, it will definitely be okay. I mean, he could be nervous or hiding his panic given the nature of the storyline but, he's not using it in some frantic-manic negative way. I'm gonna guess that Depp is using the PV in the same way that a cigarette would be used by a character in another era; he simply decided to add a math-geek, high-tech quirk to the character and that incidentally promotes this alternative to smoking to the general public... which is all good for us.

Here's another story on Johnny Depp using e-cig in his new movie, which opens today in theatres.

Holy smoke! What's with all this vaping?
Holy smoke! What's with all this vaping?

Hollywood and the tobacco industry used to be close friends, but public pressure has mostly stigmatized on-screen smoking. Now here comes a similar trend: vaping.

Never heard of vaping? It's the preferred term for using an electronic cigarette, a relatively recent invention that produces a steam-like nicotine vapor. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigs, may or may not be a healthful alternative to regular "analog" cigarettes - few studies on them exist. Nevertheless, they're becoming the entertainment industry's new habit.

In the new Sony Pictures thriller "The Tourist," the e-cig makes its most high-profile appearance yet, between the fingers of Johnny Depp. After helpfully explaining the gizmo to his co-star Angelina Jolie, Depp puffs away on a train and even over dinner at a restaurant. These scenes are likely to make today's ostracized smokers green with envy (which may be the point). Depp's character says he's quitting smoking, though many e-cigarette vendors carefully avoid making any cessation claims.

God Bill, you got me thinking. I'm not going to guess how long ago I went to a movie but I think I narrowed it down to one of two movies, a midnight, after hours, showing of ...... Madness and it was BYOB with the "B"left up to interpretation or Young Frankenstein, matinée showing, in a third run movie house so maybe the late seventies. I think maybe I went to one other since then but I can't recall it. Needless to say it's been a long long time. Even if this movie is bad, it might be a good time to go again. Talk about sticker shock.

Today's Pittsburgh Post Gazette had a movie review of "The Tourist" that mentioned Depp's character used an e-cigarette.

Anyone see the movie yet?

I haven't been to a movie theatre in more than five years (to see "Thank You For Smoking"), but will probably go to see "The Tourist".

I might take some time out tomorrow to go see the matinee.

The article Bill linked to was pretty good except this:
The e-cig industry, like Big Tobacco before it, is proactively pushing its product. Blu, one of the most recognizable e-cig brands, managed to place its packs in this year's Grammy gift bags. Gradually, it seems, the general public is getting a message: Vape 'em if you got 'em.

Maybe some stars and other Hollywoodies will find it like many others and come to ECF to find some good PV's.

Overall, a pretty good short article for the e-cig industry.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I was vaping at a Christmas party tonight and someone who had just been to the movie said "Oh you've got one of those things Johnny Depp had. How cool!" Maybe this is all it takes.
Oh what horror... to be suddenly Hollyweirded and cliche'd. To this day, even with the sun glare warnings, it's embarrassing to wear sunglasses... there's always somebody somewhere who remarks about your trying to look cool.
But, at least the word is spreading and lives might be getting saved, while smelling better at the same time.
and who knows... maybe one of these days one of the stars will announce on a major film "I discovered these at ECF"

I just watched the movie and 'kinda' liked it... He refers to vaping as smoking. :-\

"you mind me smoking?, it's not a real cigarette."
"what?"
"it's electronic, it uses the same amount of nicotine, but the smoke is water vapor, yeah, watch (Puff puff puff)."

then he puts the end against his arm then says "it's an LED light."
