For those curious about rebuilding the coil heads it's easy... but not viable more than 2 or 3 times depending on how gentle you are with the +/- end caps.

All you need to do is take a razor and score the epoxy/glue at the base of each metal cap to free it. They wont come completely off as the +/- pin legs underneath of the coil are completely glued but fold each cap back and flat... pry with the edge of that razor blade, then a small screwdriver to get each out... wrap your coil and leave long legs to the left and right... wrap that coil on your screwdriver (or whatever you wrap on) with cotton (TIGHT) and slide into the ceramic housing. Now simply close each metal end cap trapping one end of your wire... trim and you're done. If you can rebuild other stock coils... this one's just as easy but the metal end caps will fail after a few times and snap at their connection to the base of the ceramic housing.

After a few rebuilt with different builds i've just gone back to using the stock coils. It's really not that beneficial... but you can in this way change the airflow quite easily if you desire a different draw. With how well the stock coils work and how easy it is to break the end caps... i'll continue buying 5-packers.

Hey all.
I've had the Penguin for a couple weeks now but I'm having a terrible problem with dry burnt hits on the .25. I never let it run down on juice. I'm guessing the juice might be too thick and I don't know how to thin out but it's pretty annoying. I'm ready to give up on this thing.
I like a lot about it but the coils burning out quick is pretty annoying. I've been using a 70/30 so maybe a 60/40 might work better.
I'm going to try switching it out and run another juice through it. I'll post back but right now I wouldn't recommend. Such a great idea but I don't think the opening is large enough to let enough juice through to saturate the coil well enough. If you take more than two hits in a row it just can't get enough juice and then burns and its done. This is what I've figured so far. Unless you have to prime it with juice before taking each hit - which, again, is just too annoying.

I'm not having this problem, with a new coil I prime unil it will no longer hold juice.(through the top opening) My problem is that the coils don't last very long, especially the .6 ohm. While I am using the penguin, every once in a while I cover the air flow and take a few nonpower draws. I would be glad if they lasted longer, except for that I like them.

Maybe that's the problem with mine. I changed the coil like four days ago. I went through about 50 ml of juice. That doesn't seem like a lot to me. But I am used to my Aspires. They'll go through at least 60 and probably 120 - 2 bottles - before I need to change the coil.

I agree it seems that 40 to 50 ml of juice is the limit.

This worked for me , no more random ugly hits. Coil lasts longer. Add a small piece of cotton about the size of a Q-Tip head into the throat of the coil that inserts into the tank. It seems to wick much better without that small void in the ceramic throat .

I was thinking it was a wicking problem, also. I'll give this a try .... the throat is kind of small. My thought was that the bottom of the coil wasn't getting enough juice if you don't re-prime after every hit. The bottom dries out before the top. This solution might help.

Will be curious to see if you have any good luck trying this.
Here is another thing I found / noticed about the same issue. I took a empty clean tank, removed the coil and added 4ml of distilled water into it. I then flipped the tank right side up with the coil still OUT , no water spilled thru the throat opening , the water remained locked up in the tank. Even holding my thumb over the space where the coil would be and inhaled thru the tip , water still did not come down, ??
Not sure what this all means and or if related. I'm not a scientist. But to me it seems like the liquid is not free flowing to the coil cotton and possibly why adding some cotton up into the tank appears to help. Possibly a vacuum lock occuring in the tank?
So far the coil in which I did add the cotton to is still hitting good days later.

If I may, two questions, did you try this on the .25 or the .6, secondly how many ml of juice have you ran thru it? Thanks.

So far its working great. I took a pin and fluffed it. Put some cotton in the top and pushed it until it was flush with the top of the coil opening. Didn't compact it too much and just a little cotton. I'm, also, conscious to prime it every couple hits. Halfway through a tank and no problems yet.

It could be that the e-liquids are too viscous to make it from the tank to the coil on their own. Gravity is helping but the extra cotton might be a bridge to keep it saturated. I'm not noticing any flavor lose and nice big clouds from the .25. I'm going to keep track of how much liquid I go through before I need to change the coil.

It is such a handy little portable all-in-one. Lightweight and slips in the pocket easy. Great for on the go. Just have to figure out the dry hits. The extra cotton might do the trick.

Thanks Tosarge!

the 2.5 and 20 ml (2 1/2 tanks now) on the coil in question. 70 / 30 mix vg+
A couple other factors , I'm very new to vaping , and vaping to quit cigs , I'm not a chain vapor type (as yet) Plus I think your question is to how long a coil should last or will this make the coil last longer. And I really was addressing the random bad /dry hit on a very new coil and what I believe was a improvement to that issue. Because regardless of how long the coil actually lasts there shouldn't be those harsh/dry hits out of nowhere.

I am going to try extending the cotton on the .6 coil soon and I will try and keep a good record of usage

Thanks for your reply, and yes I was wondering how long the coils last, but if this stops the random dry hits it's a win.

LOL! I had to re-read that to make sure that what I read, was what I read! Cracked me up!
LOL! I actually did see the pink tanks being sold separately! I am picking up one of the new blue ones and a pink one for my daughter and son in law, and a pink one for me. :D

It seems to be an issue with the individual coils. I was able to run my last .25 coil for a month before switching it out, and it still has life left in it. I switched out my tanks and the .25 coil I put in the new tank is horrible at wicking. I have to cover the air hole with my finger and suck juice up onto the coil to get it to saturate, and then it's only good for 4 or 5 puffs. I will switch it out today with a different coil because it definitely is annoying. When the coil works, it's amazing!

I have tried thinning my juice with PG but it didn't help as much as I was hoping with this coil. Hopefully the next one is a good one.

I noticed the exact same thing when I was cleaning my tank. I had to really shake it and move it around to get the water to drain out. It is really strange that some of the coils dry out and some don't, though. I figured it was because some of the cotton is just packed really tightly into some of them, but maybe not!
