My first go at the IGO-L's setup with measuring the wire, setting up the wick on the IGO-L (waiting for some 100% pure cotton), oxidizing the SS mesh, oxidizing the Kanthal 30aug wire, wrapping the wire properly, spacing out the coil wraps, applying wattage/voltage/resistance formulas, etc... was a disaster.:-x (Amazing what this forum can teach you! A week ago, I had no clue where to start with RBAs. Members here made the transition TONS easier!) Thanks to awesome and very helpful ECF members, the 3rd attempt turned out pretty good. :)

For craps and giggles, I posted up some pics of my 2nd and 3rd setups. Guess which one is my 2nd attempt?

Just received my Igo-L, rolled my first coil using the materials supplied with the kit (i.e. the wire and silica wick). My question is, what are the "best" materials to use?

For instance, what gauge and type of wire?

Additionally, I see RooRooBears is waiting for 100% cotton. I am unfamiliar with this concept. Is the aforementioned the best to use with the IGO-L or is pure mesh? I realize it is a matter of preference, but am curious to get everyone's thoughts

Thanks!

For starters, I would just stick to silica. Vapor base and COV both carry very good silica, IMO. Cotton and mesh and everything else works great, but some of it can be fussy and more difficult to wrap/setup. Silica provides great flavor and vapor when setup properly on an IGO L. I mainly use silica even though I'm versed in the others and am very happy with it, I mainly save the mesh for my genesis style stuff.

As far as wire you can use A1 Kanthal or Nichrome, those are the most common and easily used types out there.

Wick:
3mm Silica Wick | Silica Wicks (same as COV wick)

Silica Rope 3 mm Silica Wick High Quality Temperature Resistance 1000°C | eBay

Wire:
Kanthal A1 Wire 32 Gauge 100 ft 0 25oz Resistance Resistor AWG A 1 | eBay

Resistance Heating Wire Nichrome 32 AWG 100 Ft | eBay

I went with mesh (and with IGO-L for that matter) simply because I needed a genesis style dripper. I mix my own juices and my main HW are only genesis aties, so I needed something that produces identical flavour to be able to tweak my recipes more precisely. I do have a couple of 510 drippers, but this is much better. Also, with mesh I don't get the memory effect, meaning, that I get instant (well almost) flavor change with different juice, without the need to rinse, since I can vape until almost dry. However, I am so surprised by the performance of this setup, that I vape it for two days already :) A good quality silica is a good choice for all day use, but I'd recommend to get it from a reputable source. I've had many which I could not vape due to bad taste which I couldn't get rid off. I also tried cotton wicks in my Bully in the past as an experiment and although they do work, they're also a pain to maintain as you cannot truly dry burn them clean without destroying them.

How big do you make the mesh coil? I tried one yesterday and just couldn't get it to go properly. :( What size of mesh width/length do you start to roll? I would love to get a mesh coil in there! My first one was with the silica wick n wire that came with it and it was just horrible looking. It functioned, poor-fair. Tore it out yesterday. Can't seem to find a video on youtube as far as mesh coil is concerned.

I've used both a curved SS wick and a straight one. TBH the straight one works just as well and is much easier to make. Thicker diameter wick is better than thinner.

@eHuman: actually, your vid on YB inspired me to get IGO-L and do a SS mesh setup :) Thanks man :) I am also glad to hear that straight shortie would work as well, I will give it a try on my next recoiling.

@Proteus: I cut a 3.5 x 4 cm piece of mesh, but to keep it flexible when rolled, you need to cut it diagonally to the weaving. When cut this way, it's easier to bend and shape. Then I roll it on the shorter side, so the wick length is 3.5 cm. The four turns of the coil seen on the photo gave me a resistance of 0.9 Ohms, producing nice warm vapor, but also hit like a train. Since then I recoiled it with 5 turns to get a bit higher res of 1.1 Ohms, which suits me better. Still performs like a champ.

I've been using my igo l on my segelei #8 (modded) using a variety of coil set ups. That's what I like most about the igo l if you can wrap a coil half way decent it performs consistently with most wicking materials. Right now I'm using 2.5mm silica folded with 28ga A-1 kanathal 3/4 wrap about .9 ohms. I did a hybrid mesh silica and that worked like charm to. I want a nemesis style next cause even though you can do more than one coil on the igo the extra post will make it easier to work with.
