Just got my 8oz bag of Ramie in and am preparing to prepare it. Couple quick questions. Is dawn or the homemade oxyclean the best cleaning agent, or is just boiling ok? Also, is the cleaning just a soak or do you rub it in? When I boil cotton I just squeeze it out and put on some paper towels to dry. Is that ok with ramie, or is drying in a stove necessary?(I assume the stove is just faster). Is storing it in a plastic ziplock bag ok, or is a paper bag necessary? I plan on doing the full 8oz in one shot, is there any problems with this, I have a very large kettle for boiling.

Looking forward to trying out the Ramie wick. Thanx.

:2c: Prepared about 1 ounce. Soaked in dawn and water for a while, rinsed well, boiled for bout 15 mins, rinsed well, boiled again, rinsed well, squeezed and put on a towel for drying.
Been using this for several weeks and have enough prepared for probably 6-8 months.
really don't take much and lasts and lasts and lasts.
I put mine in a baggie to keep it clean.

What is Ramie fiber made of? Please excuse me if this was already explained.
Organic fiber, ramie cloth was used way back to wrap mummies...

"The long, fine ramie fibers are naturally white and lustrous with an almost silky appearance. It is a cellulosic substance as is cotton, linen and other plant fibers. The inner structure of ramie differs from the other plant fibers in that the physical form of the cellulose is rigid and crystalline like linen but is a more porous sieve-like form providing it with even better absorbency than other cellulose fibers."

Read all sorts of interesting things about ramie in Wikipedia. It was interesting to learn that is isn't used for clothing much due to the fact it doesn't take repetitive creasing in the same spot well. I thought at first it would make for great shirts......

Now to my questions..... I thought I read that you can dry burn this fiber. Is that correct?
I'm also curious about the preparation of the fiber. Is the correct procedure to boil it and then cover it in VG? I'm not quite sure how much VG is needed and if the ramie should be dry when the VG is added.
TIA

Well don't know about dry burning Ramie, but broke the 90 watt barrier today with a Vertical 0.18 ohm build on the Magma, wicked with Ramie, and must say, it is quiet the Stellar vape.

Have a 0.34 build on one, and was vaping at my sisters, nephew lights up a cigar, thinking he's all kewl and all, styling like, I take a hit off it, thinking, hmm, draws to tight, vape plumes lacking, and tastes like I am getting dry hits, and wicking is the issue.

I hand him the Helmsman topped with a Magma, 0.34 ohm vertical build, loaded with Strawberry BlackApple juice. He takes a vape, his eye's open wide, vape comes gushing out of him, and he's going, holy crap, the blows my cigar totally away.

I just smile and laugh, saying, yep, your observational powers are simply amazing.

Not my pic cuz iphone camera is scratched but this is a good close-up of the 4 channels. Though the pic is someone's build with cotton, mine appears similar but with Ramie

thanks, will do; just wondering about the angled wick cutting, but I guess I'll soon find out the reason for that.. :)

I'm diggin the ramie, for sure.

xpen, when you lay it out to dry, try your best to lay it straight. when I cut my ramie wicks, I always cut at an angle...you'll see what I mean. :thumb:

Time for an update... I've spent this last weekend testing the ramie I've received from the Woolery (side to side with some rayon fiber).

I've boiled it just in case (two passes, some 20 min each) and let it naturally dry: the end result was quite densely packed, but easy to revert to fluffy.

Ramie is a joy to work with.. Stiff enough to easily pass thru a microcoil, yet not so stiff to be a problem, it wicks like a firehose!

As for the wick density, I've used probably far less material than dice recommended: just enough to fill the microcoil (when dry), still being able to slide it around without much resistance.

Hey, ramie has character.. Despite the boiling I can still taste some extra flavor being imparted to my juices: sort of an earthy smell, similar somehow to hemp but far less pronounced. Am I the only one?

To recap, ramie is a winner for me, no doubt about that.. I'm glad I've bought some stock of it ;)

Thanks for this thread, dice et al, and once again kudos to BJ43 - who pioneered this material.

Yeah, ramie is a joy to work with. Just got a sample of rayon and slots is sending me some Cellucotton, so get to have a wick off contest. lmao. Going to build both Rose2's the same and wick one with rayon other with ramie, and see how they compare side by side.

Am getting longevity off the ramie, it's been almost 2 months now since I last touched the Rose, except for filling. That's some great burn time.

Sorry if this has been asked before, I might've missed it before when perusing the thread. Anyway, how well does ramie hold up to changing liquids without rewicking? For me in my Russian RBAs, cotton changes pretty quick from one to the other (within 6 to 15 mid length pulls, depending on the prior liquid), while hemp always took a bit longer (sometimes up to 2 mL of juice). Planning on ordering some since all my research indicates a lack of toxic fumes from burned ramie, while rayon might give some when burned, which has me leary of rayon. I, myself believe it's negligible at best, but my roomie has lung issues, and everyone has a dry or even burnt hit from time to time.

At any rate, keep on vaping, everyone! :vapor:
