Thanks revco! This is the greatest forum I've ever joined, and I've been a member of several of them. Very helpful and very nice folks. I'm definitely glad I decided to join your forum!I go entirely by taste...you'll know when it's time to change out the atomizer. Most of the time the flavor will change, but sometimes you'll just notice reduced performance. As far as changing juices, I regularly swap on the fly without any cleaning...but I only do that with compatible flavors. For example, I might take a butterscotch and put it on a previous cinnamon roll...but I wouldn't take a lime and put it in a baked good most likely. When I want to try to restore a coil, I'll usually drop it in some Everclear overnight and can restore it much of the time. Sometimes a flavor just won't go away...in which case, it's time to just replace.
I really got into rebuilding the Kanger coils and that's probably the biggest reason I prefer them over others. It's really pretty easy once you figure it out and you can get better than stock results most of the time. Once I started doing this, it's pretty simple to switch out the coil...and since it only costs pennies to rebuild, I find myself swapping out for rebuilt more than I used to. If you're the handy type, you might try giving a go at it...it just takes a few relatively simple/inexpensive materials and tools you probably have lying around.
Good luck with your journey! Glad you decided to join us!
Thanks WakeUpDead! I'm going to stop by my favorite shop and pick up some of this stuff, and they're awesome people that know their stuff. I'll also pick up some cotton balls and give it a try. I think I'll stick with the easy parts before I try to mess with wrapping coils!Most people are using just the good old 100% Organic non bleached cotton balls. Unroll one, pull out a small piece, roll into a wick, tread through coil, snip ends and bam, best tasting wick out today IMO! Have heard people use cotton yarn or thread, some say to boil the cotton, I dont and havent had any issues. As long as you get the Organic non bleached cotton you should be fine.
Replacing the wick is easy, if your going to make new coils too yes please watch Youtube how to's and or speak with your local shop, just make sure you understand the Ohm's law so you dont blow up your battery or pop coils fry your tank.
Good luck and never forget why we vape, to live a longer life, a tobacco free life!
Thanks Weizenheimer, with all the help you're all giving me, I'm really glad I graduated to the tank systems. Much more flavor, and I'm tired of the cartomizers. I still use and re-fill them when I need to carry a few lightweight and pocketable vapes, but the tanks are the way to go. I've got to get a few more, along with some of the materials suggested. I'm thinking of the VaporShark Glass, which looks exactly like it's a Kanger, and probably made by them. The only difference I see is the added amount of wire, and they use Kanthal A1 wire, which I've been told is better wire than the type of Kanthal wire what Kanger uses, but that's way over my head being a newbie to this!accumulate a decent number of used ones, then on each pull off the top post, remove the loose wick material on top and toss it, soak them overnight in cheap vodka, rinse with water, dry fire without the top post on until any left over gunk is burned off, replace the loose wick you tossed with some new, replace top post, and reuse. Getting around 15 or so of them will allow you to go months without replacing\rebuilding if you follow this cleaning method first.
Some people use them without the loose wick on top. I tried it on a couple, and they worked great until my tanks were about half empty. Then they got gurgly. I put a snip of wick on top and they worked great all the way to empty.
Thanks Junk104! The guys at ecig crib told me that what they do is wrap the wire around a nail and then thread the wick into it. Sound pretty easy, and I'm pretty good with tech stuff, so I'm sure I can pick it up fairly quickly. I'm sure I'll toss a few of the first ones like you did, but that's how we learn. I'll be careful with the dry burn, and the video posted was really helpful. Sounds like this will become a hobby! Thanks for the suggestions!All above said it best.
I just recoiled a kanger head. I bought 7feet of 32ga kanthal for $2. Expect to throw your first few coils that you build away. I had to anyway. I'm doing a micro coil now. They are easy to clean and rewick (I'm using cotton). It's a good way to get into rba without dropping the $30 on a rebuildable. I wouldn't recommend it to a new vapee usually, but if you are blowing through a few heads a day or so, it's defiantly worth a look if these other suggestions don't work out!
Be careful with the dry burn. You could scorch the rubber insulator inside the atomizer, which will make everything taste like burnt rubber, even if you replace the wick, coil and juice. I've done it. It's gross. Wouldn't recommend it.
Good luck!
I'm new to using tank systems, and recently purchased an Innokin itazte MVP. It came with 2 iClear 16 tanks, but I'd read on the forums here that the Kanger ProTank was the way to go, and I do like the idea of a bottom coil. My question is, how long should the wicks last? I've been vaping a dark caramel/butter rum juice and the wicks only last about 2 days. This seems crazy, as even the iclear 16 tanks with the top coil and long wicks last about a week. Any ideas?
Thanks for any help, as I'm a bit frustrated.Kurt
There is a solution to that tooAll above said it best.

I've got 2 Iclear 16s that came with my Itaste 2.0 MVP and they do work great. I've also been looking at the iclear 30S. I believe the only difference between the 30 and the 30S is the shield that goes around the wicks. I don't vape fruity flavors, so I don't think I have to worry about the PC tanks on the Iclear cracking. Less expensive, too...Protanks will last a lot longer say 30%? But IMHO the Iclear has better vapor production and flavor.
Wow, I hope I can 2-3 weeks out of my wicks, that would be awesome. I may have to switch to my 2nd favorite juice, as it's lighter than the thick, dark juice I'm vaping now. I almost wish I'd never tried this juice, as it's incredible, but hard on the coils from what I'm learning...I was given a tip not to hold the on button down for more than 3-5 seconds then wait at least that long before pressing it again. I've gotten good life out of my coils doing that even burning on higher settings. I use a Kanger PT mini 2and have 4 of them. I may change a coil every 2-3 weeks.
dark think eliquids do tend to clog up the coil and wick area faster;
with a top coil perhaps less stuff manages to wick its way upwards, but with a bottom coil, the heavy stuff naturals flows down to the coil and if it doesn't evaporate easily its going to stay there and gunk it up.
Oh the other hand, I find myself prefering to change coil per day;
I use a protank, but with the base from a mini protank which is an eGo thead, not a 510 thread; the miniprotank base doesn't clutter up the 510 connection. (and add a second inverted silicone cap on top the atomizer to make it seal).
I got more than 10 atomizer heads, so if I run though 1 a day, I leave them soaking until a Sunday then dry burn and replace the top wicks, and ready to roll again.
When I first started using protanks I used to use a coil for a week or more until they became so obviously unuseable.
I haven't noticed the plastic taste with the iClears tht came with my MVP, but I do prefer the glass... And I have a couple knucklehead tips which I love!iClears taste like plastic when I vape IMHO. Kanger PT 3 with a swivel tip works much better and isn't such a juice hog.
