I have been rebuilding my protanks, vivi nova's and evods for a couple weeks now..

FINALLY got it down that I can do one in a couple minutes.. last night in between surfing the net and tv, I rebuilt 15 total..

I do between 4-5 wraps and get 1.8 to 2.2 ohm. I am using kenthal 32 gauge and bakers cotton thread, no flavor wick since the thread really blossomed when I boiled it.. getting great vapor and flavor out of them.

I am also curious about the steel mesh, would love to see some pics of them done..

Alright....you guys motivated me to do this.
I just ordered 100ft of 32ga kanthal from temco on ebay, and a few lengths of silica eco wool in 1mm, 2mm and 3mm from snaredrummer.
I have about 10 worn out heads to play with.
If they turn out half as good as my first diy ejuice I am vaping at the moment, I will be a very happy camper.
Thanks for all the great contributions!

No difference in doing mesh Except, MAKE SURE none of the wires touch the side of the base and your golden.

I'm also getting burnt hits on the first dozen or so pulls. I've wrapped about 50 of these so far most with out much of a burnt taste. Now all taste like I am inhaling the smoke from a car that just did a burn out. I do not dry burn them. I guess I should start. I use the same stuff the op uses.

So many people using different wicks. I wish people would post the name brand or a link to the wick they are using. In wouldn't mind trying 10 different kinds of wick in search of the best for me.

I'm going to get a 1/16 drill bit tomorrow and I have 100ft of wire on the way. Plenty of wire to play with. I'm going to wally world tomorrow to get some yarn and feed it through my coils.

Or I'll get a 4_40 screw or a 5/64 drill bit.

What size butchers twine? Link me please.

Thanks

I fixed my burnt rubber taste last night, Hot spot/spots, hot leg. Whatever you want to call it. I fired it until all coils were even and I am back to a "great vape" (that should be on a t shirt). I had a coil that was to close to another and after spreading them even it glowed perfect. I guess I got a little cocky in my wick making and stopped checking my work.

I suspected that might be it, lol. Ask me how I know, lol

Got my goodies and wrapped a few up.
My best results were using 3mm ekowool and 4 wraps of 32ga kanthal.
It metered right at 1.9ohm.
I did not use a flavor wick.
The vape is amazing. Completely blows away any stock coils I have tried in my protank.
The clouds are much greater, flavor is amazing and in general it's much more awesome!
Im only half way through my first tank and will report back if I have any issues.
I'm curious if I will have any leaking issues, but don't anticipate it, due to the size of the ekowool. 3mm is huge!

I picked up the twine at the grocery store .. this is one made by faberware, its named kitchen twine, not bakers..
its about 3ml thick unbleached cotton.. I boiled it with change of water for about an hour and it blew up.. no flavor wicks since its so thick.. its not a tight string, looser, I think it soaks up juice well from being a looser one.. my opinion.. I have not tried using anything else since this is working for me so far..

Tho, I still would like to see a pic of the mesh and were the ground and hot wires are.

Whats the consensus on torching the silica?

And should I rinse/wash before/after I torch it.

I have materials coming to start rebuilding because every store bought coil I have has a smokey/burnt taste at first and I'm tired of wasting eliquid trying to vape through it..

Most of them do get better the longer I use them but a couple just wasted juice.

Frustrating....

I'm a silica guy and have NEVER torched mine. also do you pull one of your flavor wicks out of a new coil? Most come with 2 flavor wicks . I always take 1 out from the git go.

I always leave the flavor wicks ( 2 of them) in but how would that contribute to the smoke/burnt taste???

I think it may allow more air to get inside the tank so the juice flows better. If the juice is vacuum locked, it won't flow to the coil very easily.

I've also noticed an issue with air getting stuck in the well the coil sits in, which prevents liquid from getting to the wicks and coils. Flipping the silicon gasket that sits above the wicks (on the post) can allow for air to escape the area more easily with thicker juices.

For me, removing 1 wick and flipping the gasket upside = vaping heaven. Great flavor, throat hit, and vapor (this coming from a guy who was dripping for nearly 2 years). I do need to hold the unit upside down every once in a while to clear the hole for the wicks of juice and allow air in, and the occasional draw without activating the batter helps bring air in as well.

I haven't rebuilt a thing yet - but the two things I found I had to do in order to get any flavor from a ProTank were:
a) remove half the flavor wicking, and
b) replace the 2.7 ohm coil it came with with a 2.0 ohm I had (actual readings)
Because of that, I'm getting VERY TEMPTED to try wrapping my own, no-flavor-wick, 1.8 to 2 ohm coils.

So - what is the consensus to achieve that:
32 gauge 5 wraps? 30 gauge 4 wraps?
Or start off fancy and try this stuff (it's 32 g. kanthal ribbon)?
