Well I have been saying in a few different threads here that heads need to be improved by using a silicone grommet instead of a rubber grommet. Food grade silicone is inert, so even if heated, won't give off noxious, horrible fumes and taste like these yucky rubber grommets in these heads. Also silicone has a high heat tolerance.

Well, Kanger has apparently been listening to unhappy vapors trying to enjoy their tanks but having one problem after the next (and ALL heads have this issue, not just Kanger's). Well, The Don Mega tipped me off on an article on PBusardo's website about a new Kanger head that's coming.... and guess what.... it has a silicone grommet and no-resistance legs to prevent hot legs. PBusardo purposely charred both grommets and said they seemed to burn at the same temp but the silicone grommet didn't give off any nasty smell. :)

This new design could save clearos.... I hope this head won't cost an arm and two legs. :D

[for some reason I cannot link to PBusardo's webpage, but go to tasteyourjuice.com and then search for "new kanger head" and you'll see that article with pictures.]

EDIT: Guess I should have named the thread NEW GROMMET instead of NO BURNY GROMMETS as there are grommets in the new head, but what I meant was, they won't taste like burned rubber and shouldn't burn at all with no-resistance legs on the coils... so the new heads basically have "no burny grommets" ... :D

I am glad that Kanger is continually improving their products like this.

I'm glad too, but I'd wager it's because a [perhaps small but] significant percentage of the vaping community have moved away from clearos all together b/c of the burning grommet problem, and will gravitate to systems that don't use a head with a rubber grommet. The PT2 would be near-perfect without this problem. And it is ALWAYS a problem for SOME of the people/market, and many won't try to fix it... they'll just look for another product that works better... and that may not be a Kanger device. So it's in their own best interest to do this. It's too bad they aren't ALL doing it. Smoktech, etc.... They will eventually if they don't want the vaping community to move away from clearos and go to Genny type clones that don't use a grommet at all.

Glad I saw this post, as I was just about to buy a bunch EVODs and heads for them. Maybe I should wait, although I have not had any problems with my current EVODs.

Lucky you! I only hope the new heads aren't outrageously priced and that the coils will hold up to rewicking with cotton repeatedly... I usually pull the coils out but with the no-res legs I'd want to use these as long as possible.

Do these new silicone grommets have anything to do with the new Protank III w/ dual coils that is supposed to be coming out soon? .. There was a discussion going about it last night over in the noob section (forget thread title) I never had a problem with the burning grommet, but I also usually place a small amount of juice underneath the grommet so when the stem post heats up there is a juicy barrier between it, and the grommet ... works for me.

I am personally hoping for Kanger to redesign the coil base so that it sits up in a more prominent position like the Evod, as opposed to it's present recessed seat ... that would be perfecto!

If you rebuild the coils do this mod and there will be 0 burn rubber taste in your coil :
Method tested by me in at least 5 builds and not even one had burn taste.

I'm going to try this tonight! Thanks!

@State: Thanks, but those low-res coils are way too pricey for my blood at the rate I use them! I prefer to roll my own anyway. But nice to know the option is out there.... means it will eventually find its way into head design as standard, starting hopefully with Kanger.

@Nikkita: Sorry, but I personally haven't heard if this will be incorporated into the DC PT3... would hope they'd make all their heads with silicone grommets and no-res legs in time. There is certainly reason to be hopeful since the DC PT3 is a brand new product. :)

Look30, THANK YOU for this! I rebuilt a coil using this mod and so far no burny taste! Have been able to vape the PT2 for the last few hours. This mod is also far easier than doubling the legs up!

Interestingly the replacement grommets at kidney puncher don't appear to have that top collar that needs cutting off, though they're made for another device but people who bought them reviewed them as working on the PTs too. AGA Series Positive Post Insulators - 10 pack - Kidney Puncher I thought they might leak, but judging from this mod, I'd say they're better than the stock ones! No mod required! :)

Anyway I have like 35 heads so I'll be chopping them all off for now!

EDIT: You know what else is weird? It seemed to really improve the flavor! I have been complaining that micro-coils don't seem to have as much flavor (though more vapor) than standard coils... shaving the grommet somehow really helped the flavor come through!

I've never had the burning grommet issue, but wonder if it's worth cutting that little edge? It seems to me that would help keep it in place? I think that's it's purpose...?

Though it obviously isn't needed according to you guys

It all depends on coil position and how hard you're driving the atty.
Don't worry about keeping it in place because once you insert the pin the grommet is tight fitted in place.

My guess of why that flange is there if for mass production where they don't finalize the assembly at the same station so they wanted something to hold the coil between stations.

The flavour improvement is maybe due to improved air circulation around the coil itself by having more space and less restriction.

I think you are probably right on all counts. And the replacement insulators at kidney puncher don't appear to have that top collar at all.

Sadly, after vaping a few hours last night, I did get that bad rubber taste again. But I still think this fix will help most people. I vape near-100% VG so my power needs to be a little higher to get the flavor to come through.

But a rubber grommet just does not belong in a head. Rubber is great for tires but not this. That grommet needs to be made of inert material.

I did make a second micro-coil with a shaved grommet AND doubled-up twisted legs which I will try tonight. But my plan going forward is to use my dripper and put the tanks aside until I can find the right diameter silicone tubing to buy to cut my own little grommets to replace this horrid rubber ones. I also HOPE HOPE HOPE Kanger will sell their new silicone grommets as a replaceable part, in bags of at least 10 for cheap, as it would be easy to simply replace these with new ones.

Just copy/paste this into the address bar and remove the space between .com and /wordpress. Weird how it would not allow a hyperlink, though.
nice...wonder how well the resistance no resistance coils work out...I guess they keep the "legs" from getting hot just like the coil part

Not working for me. Installed 2 perfect coils with the surgically altered grommet- NO VOLTAGE!

EDIT: Nevermind- I cut off the wrong end.

I've done the grommet circumcision several times and never had a problem. I can't really think of any electrical reason that cutting that little ridge off the grommet would cause no voltage.

I also wish they would sell replacements. A ceramic grommet would be nice, if one could be made that fit well enough.

Exactly. But even if the silicone grommet heated up it would not emit a bad taste or smell, which is great because the coils will be rebuilt when the stock one goes and ... might end up charring the silicone grommets like the rubber gets charred.

Yes ceramic would be great but not likely to work in an application where it has to accommodate a push-pin and keep the head from leaking. I read that medical grade silicone is heat tolerant to 500F... wonder how warm a "hot leg" gets.... I would bet the rubber grommets have a lower heat tolerance. Because even before they burn they can heat up enough to add a little nasty taste to the vape. They don't just suddenly emit noxious fumes and taste when burnt or charred.

I've really come to hate the little buggars. :D

he cut the thicker flange thus the shorter pin assembly will not touch the contact on the APV.... no voltage :)

you're driving it way too hard. in normal conditions the fix works just fine. I wape 70% VG and Bobba's and they work fine but with normal coils at medium power for that resistance and didn't had burnt in a couple of days.

On a separate note I tried today the new Aspire BDC coils are they're fantastic. Vapor production is off the charts for a T3. I think this is the next step in bottom coil vaping but to date I only saw one attempt to rebuild and wasn't a pretty one.
