Ok, I'll play around with it some more. What have you guys found to be the sweet spot for say a 50/50 juice? Not sure about vapors tongue, since on the nautilus Im getting great flavor....I was thinking the flavor is more "diffused" because there is so much more airflow. What I will say is that on the tightest setting the flavor is a tad stronger than wide open, but still weak. Appreciate the insight boys, will continue to try and figure things out.

Kind of hard to answer with a one answer fits all question. The .5 ohm and 1.2 ohm OCC's require diff wattage settings for peak flavor. Much less the RBA which can be built at any ohms.

Afc set to "two hole" setting with 50/50 juice flavor peaks at:

26.5w with the .5 ohm occ
23.5 with the 1.2ohm occ
25w with rba build: twisted 30ga 5/4wrap 6-32 screw wind .55ohms kgd wicked heavy.

That's right now. If I put in a new occ coil or rewick my rba I'll be readjusting again but usually within +/- 2w.

Start high at say 30w and work your way down until your vape starts to get harsh. That means it's starting to flood. Somewhere along the way you'll hit the sweet spot. Keep your draw effort the same throughout the adjustments and take three or four pulls at each setting.

What you're searching for is the match between power level and wicking density. If it's wicked heavier slightly higher power levels will match up; if it's wicked lighter slightly lower power.

Good luck

All right here's my experience. I have 6 nautilus minis and loved them still do and the flavor to me is great on them. I got 3 Subtank minis because I wanted the larger capacity tank and it's what we do..... buy stuff. I used both the occ coils and while they were OK the flavor didn't pop like my nautilus. The occ coils also made me cough a bit too and I already had gone down to 6 from 12.

So I figured after 2 weeks let's give the rba a try. I wicked the stock coil it came with and wow. The flavor was so much better to me than the occ and I could even use the 12mg juices I still had and zero coughing. The best flavor I used was miss Samoa from driptonic. RnR banana hammock is fantastic too in it. Not sure what the vg pg mix is on those.

As acknowledged in recent pages NFR the ST's are getting equivalent production to other tanks at substantially less wattage.But the builds are geared to a very distributed heat distribution which yields more vapor diffusion. So you're right on that score. This is a plus actually because if we harness more of that energy to vaporization we should be able to build density along with the volume potential the airflow provides.So there's substantial reward to be had on the RBA side and as well for the OCC head to build for density. Meantime if you like the output (and I do) you might try constraining airflow somewhat and/or enhancing draw by trying less open drip tips.

I targeted a density build and posted those results earlier. A huge improvement. However, this design is more well suited towards optimization of airflow. To match airflow more formidable coil designs will have to be introduced.

And I would try possibly adjusting your VG/PG ratio. Contrary to popular legend PG is not the principle flavor carrier. I find that myth to be just wrong. As it inhibits vapor production it must deter flavor. No vapor, no flavor. But it first must be vaporized.

It's not just you.

Good luck and enjoy the vape!

:)

Liked your post jb because you had the presence of mind to actually post what you're vaping. Wish more peeps would do that. Especially if it's a well known item because it gives us a reference point.

The OCC coils made me cough too and took a bit of getting used to to crank them out to 45W. It is a very dry diffused vape.

Enjoy the vape jb and good luck.

I've actually changed my mind on the RBA portion. My first response was disappointment, but after using it for about a week, I quite like the draw. So far everything is working well. Haven't noticed any melting with the clear insulator. I was sure to tighten down the build deck when I first started building on it, and it was pretty loose. So watch out for that when you first get it. That may be part of the problem with insulators melting. I found myself a nice juice that's pretty clean (Space Jam Astro, reduced with 50/50 and TPA Starberries and Cream) and the coil isn't gunking as badly as it was before. Overall, pretty enjoyable. I like being able to build a 1.3 ohm 28 gauge coil and run my box at 16W and get good flavor and vapor. That's something I could never do with my drippers. I give the credit to the tiny little chamber.

MacTechVpr, I'm getting about 24hrs heavy use from a coil/wick in the rba. Not burning the wick....when it works, it's excellent. It's gunking up as seen in the pic, then loses flavour... tastes near burnt.

How to stop the gunking up? Between 14-18w usually. Max vg. 3mg It's my adv, not interested in changing juice. Is there any adjustment I could make to make it last longer? If not, then that's cool...it's a fantastic 24 hrs of use. lol. I end up cleaning the coils for re-use and rewick.

I finally got myself to use the RBA. With the factory installed coil (.5 ohm) in it; I just wicked it (aplenty, channels opened properly).
The results were mixed: much better vapor production, cooler draw - yet with a massive decrease in flavor, irrespective of wattage.
Way worse than my Russian (with an 1.4 ohm coil) with the exact same juice (90% VG; DIY). No dry/burnt hits though - just a bland, perfectly neutral end taste.

With both the Russian and the OCCs in the Mini the vapor is a bit sweet and rich. Not so with the RBA in this configuration. I'll try a tighter build next.

I also rebuilt the 1.2 ohms OCC, as it was too gunked to just rewick it (and I tried hard, but was unable to pull out the wick). Used .35 Kanthal, about 8 tight wraps (could be nine, though). Got 1.4 ohms. Kinda overwicked it, but the end result is better than the original - bubbles, taste and all.

No pictures this time around, I'll try to post some next time (crappy phone camera anyway).

Cheers!

Thanks DP. There were some things I wasn't comfortable bringing up. Nothing earth shaking. But I don't like to deal in propositions or the questions and answers they might require. Plus perhaps too much for this particular thread. I'm here because there are so many newcomers being drawn here and would like to let them all know there are alternatives to the status quo. Just too little time, at times.

Good luck.

Sorry folks. If you may benefit from some of the remarks I replaced here I am pleased. Had to edit this. Not ready to discuss some of the implications.

Good luck.

Thanks really very much for posting this. However, I'd greatly appreciate you not discuss this on the forum. Eventually as I've done, most of my research will go into the public domain. But the science part is a long term project. I have three engineers and physicists I work with. And I wan't to have more technical answers on the chemical side before I start making a case for it. So this is between us. I've not discussed color temp or the electrical metallurgical aspects so far to that extent. There will be more if the process doesn't get derailed. There are a lot of people who do not want us to perfect our coils.

Good luck with your tobacco flavors. I'm hopeless. I love NET's.

Good luck.

:)

I feel like we overheard a private conversation. Was this supposed to be a PM? Found it interesting anyway MacTech. Thanks for the info. I won't tell a soul. Just messing with ya. It is great info.

Thanks for the post bro. Appreciate the pic. Best advice I could give as you install and oxidize the coil…

° Try to keep the coil on the bit it was wound;

° Rake or very gently run a light screwdriver or pin across the coils;

(This spreads the coil slightly and if not in good contact due to spreading may help spring them back into a better tighter geometry. Sometimes they get skewed or spread as tension is passed on into the wind as we pull on the leads during installation.)

° Use very gradual short rather than longer pulses starting with lower then moderate voltage;

(Oxidation is a process and will possibly be compromised or not happen at all completely if too hot too fast.)

° Induce a slight lighting from the center and proceed slowly until you see a uniform color at the surface end-to-end;

(You do not need to do dry fires until it's white hot. Usually you can step pulse to a uniform red color that fires identically every time and that's enough. Fire once only lighting to yellow thereafter and you're done. That's to ensure you don't have a hot spot anywhere.

If at any point the coil disfigures or changes color just toss it. You'll spend far less time getting it right with a coil that's intact.

However, I strongly recommend a ceramic tweezers. These are useful for correcting smaller cooler (dark) spots that may be visible. These imperfections may be inherent to the wire or induced by small changes in tension applied during the wire. Same thing applies if they don't immediately resolve with a very light squeeze and pulse, just ditch it. You'll be happier.

Now, in practical terms we don't always have the luxury of that kind of time. If your coil is almost perfect and you've got a gap you can kill with a regular tweezer after the fire. Try hitting it. It's you're vape. Maybe the juice you want will let you get away with it.

Unresolved imperfections are like the loose connection. They will make the vape hot, lower actual vaporization, increase dry diffusion. In general just make for a bad vape.

This is what a proper electrical wind cures. Make a few coils. Toss those that don't cut the mustard. Keep your standards high.

It's your vaping enjoyment after all.

Good luck all.

:)

Jesus christ, MacTech's posts should come with a PhD requirement. :D I appreciate the advice....I've gotten flavor to improve by tightening the air to the two hole setting, but it's still not at my nautilus mini level with the RBA, but I think I will have to play with coils and wicking to dial it it. Wattage it seems to like around the 22 mark on my 30w istick, and from those that have seen pbusardo's vids on the istick you know the istick runs hot because of mean setting vs rms. Im using the stock coil, wicked fairly tight (Im very new to RBAs so I don't know if I should wick tight or loose)...but I guess I'll build a new coil (with try a coil that is not spaced) and go from there. Glad to have found this place though, lots of knowledge, almost too much to take in....almost. ;)

istick 20w yes it uses "mean", istick 30w uses "rms" or is it "pwm"
either way eleaf has addressed the issue the istick 20w had w/the power output and corrected/changed it on the 30w and 50w afaik
