Just curious. Has the Subtank ruined you on other tanks? I rebuild my own Protank 3's and others of similar. the Subtank is the first with this much airflow. I am now trading off and on with a subtank and a protank and I now find the PT (with and adjustable airflow base) way too tight, my wife has a ego and a clearomizer that I feel like im trying to pull a battleship through a drinkbox straw.

Without a doubt. My Aerotanks are officially retired. My 2 ST minis get all the action now.

Go for 3mm ID then, what gauge wire are you using? I'd try 26g 5, or 6 wraps spaced out, and enough cotton that there is a bit of tension when you pull it through, then trim up the wick with scissors.

I've only done a nickel build on my STmini rba, so I don't know what works best with Kanthal.

So thats a good build to test out ? 26ga 6-7 wraps spaced out on 2.5 mm ID for around 0.7 ohm .. at around 20 watts ?

That would probably work just fine..
I'm still rockin the simple build, 6 wraps 27awg with a 2.8mm id coil tensioned, no or micro spacing... wicked chunky, it's doing a good job over the last few days.. going to rebuild it again tonight and take a few pics.. just for kicks.. got a second RBA with no modifications I'll build the same coil and wick on to compare..

Titanium wire (0.32 mm) 0.9 ohms

Vapes like a champ! Even on 12 watts :)

So Cal
...A few things I have found with chunky wicking which I have already posted on warrant repeating here. An extended wick break in period is necessary with chunky wicks. They can be a little spitty and floody at first especially when underpowered. Flavor can be a little weak at first too, however after 3-5ml of vaping at higher power to stave off spitting and flooding they begin to tame down. After 5-10ml they settle in and require less power to stave off burning. Once there they absolutely hurl warm dense flavor bomb vapor! And do they last? I got 65ml out of my last wick!

Just say'n, wick it chunky peeps!

Hey cig:

I re-wicked last night with just a tad less cotton, and I gotta tell ya that your observations here are pretty spot on!

Last night afterwards I had no more big pops, but lots of sizzling snaps. Instinctively most vapers would probably turn it down, I turned up the wattage and continued to vape. After a tank the sizzling has definitely toned down and isn't so annoying now.

You got 65ml out of a wick? Same juice right?

Thanks D, yes same juice. 10% off the shelf juice/90% 50/50 nic base. Take a look at Slav's wicking. Is that about where you landed for density? It's where I'm at using spaced coils. Contact coils can use a tiny bit less but not much less. Glad your figuring it all out D, I enjoy seeing peeps make progress, it's why I'm here, not to insist you do it my way, but to see woes turn to wows.

I've been using the subtank for a while now and I am happy with the 0.5ohm coils so far. I tried a couple of builds with the RBA and the best I managed to get so far is with a microcoil, 26g wire, 5 wraps on 2mm drill but not spaced. I tried wicking it with as much cotton as possible as suggested.

The thing is that I constantly get liquid in the drip tip and gurgle which does not happen with the OCC coils. I am using the subtank mini on an Istick 50 at 24watts and my liquid is 50/50. Any help would be much appreciated.

Okay, I made it now but ... It's harsh a bit and not a lot of vapour actually. As you can see on the images below I use a lot of de-skinned KGD cotton and its not easy to move the cotton back and forth at all in the coil - (as cigatron suggested, thanks). But my concern is that it could be over wicked or it will just take time to break in and start to be good after few mls of juice .. ??? Please let me know.

6 contact wraps of 0.40 mm kanthal at 2.5 mm mandrel pointing to 0.8 ohm. This is my coil & wick below:

Got my Subtank mini today, built a 0.7 vertical coil and wrapped it in cotton, none in the middle, works a treat!- Keeps the juice from flooding and wicks like a champ, my first build and I am proud of myself!
My only qualm with this tank, using the pre-built OCC coils gives me a horrible taste after the first or second drag, possibly it is not wicking like it should as it tastes like hospital (cotton?), or could it be the machine oil taste that people are talking about? I will probably try and rebuild the OCC if it annoys me enough and see if it stops...

I'd be interested to see a pic of your vertical coil build. :)

do primer pulls first as u need to create a vacuum, let it sit for a few min, start off w/low power and work ur way up, the higher the watts the more air u need and the harder u need to suck imo.
from pics u could try cutting the tails on a slight angle and/or thin the tails out slightly, think of a tree , trunk is thick roots are thin

So all in all the coil doesnt look over wicked ? I will try to cut it next time on an angle but still its harsh now. I mean I will keep trying if it will break in in few minutes and mls of juice but I am not sure. Should I use less cotton the next time ?

No, its not because of the nic level. I use 6mg and It's normal for me even its low .. by harsh I mean its really harsh, hot and not pleasurable. Probably its over wicked ? Do you think I should use less cotton by looking at the images ?

hot?, do u give it a good primer? lower power and/or increase airflow. use delin adapter or longer tip,
i used to vape at 27 btw, 6 is on the high side for this rba, believe it or not.
it does wsettle down after awhile, imo thinned tails help but everyone is different, ymmv
