Ok, I've tried both ButtKickers and the Pancake method. I'm using 2mm spaced 0.5 ohm coils, basically same as what comes with the rba. I'm vaping an 85VG (Swamp thang by ruthless) and I def can't vape anywhere near 40 or 50 watts. Even at 35 more than 2 seconds is a dry pull. Ive tried redoing my build many times, and though the pancake seems to be working better for me, I still cant chain vape like rip or this guy, esp not at those wattages.

gave up last night, but got back to it again tonight, right now im rocking a 3mm 26micro coming out at 1.1 ohms, pushed it really close to the airhole, and wicked it (both skins off) with the 'pancake' method, gave it a haircut so it would fit under the chimney, and so far so good *fingers crossed* 22 watts and kicking
time will tell if it works out in the cold though (where i really want it to)

Five strips of cotton later and I think I got the rewicking right, it's wicking fast enough to vape above 30 watts. Kept having to put less cotton in with each try because of dry hits, and this last time it is super wet unless I crank up the power. (Might be in danger of flooding, not sure :O )

I built another vertical coil at 1.2 ohm on my spare RBA and after a tank full it's rocking killer flavor with decent vapor production, not for cloud chasers but it does produce a juicy vape with no dry hits so far 20-25watt, I did make it past 30w but it's just too hot for me..

I'm really impressed so far, you need to try this.

vert.jpg

Pictured build is 3x 30awg twisted / 6 wraps / 1ohm / wicking is 1/4" strip of KGD separated in half, skin on the coil wrapped around 2-3 times and fluffed.

Finally got mine in today. So far I am really happy. I have only used the included stock coils, but they are excellent. Most certainly the best stock coils I have ever used.

On the 0.5 ohm coil I am getting the same vapor with a 1 second pull that I get with my Kayfun (1.2 ohm) with a full 4 second draw. If I hit this thing for 3-4 seconds, it fills my room up with vapor quickly and definitely outperforms a KF in that area.

The vapor at 25w is a bit cooler than my orchid dual coil .5 build (which is to be expected), but the vapor production is as good or better. Pretty impressive for stock clearo coils.

The taste is slightly muted compared to my Kayfun lite, but that's no surprise as the KF has restricted airflow and I usually mouth to lung hit it at 13 watts. However, the subtank's flavor is certainly "competitive" and it definitely puts out more vapor. I will have to try the 1.2 coil at a lower wattage on a small airflow setting to really compare the two as far as taste. Perhaps use a smaller drip tip too.

Wicking is keeping up perfectly on 50/50 juice at 25w. Bubbles galore after each hit.

Mine has the clear insulator on the RBA deck. I haven't tried it yet, but I am hoping it is not the "monkey ..... insulator. But honestly I am in no hurry to even build it. The stock coils seem to be doing pretty well.

nice review.
i thought mine was clear until i took it apart, it was tan.

quick question to help further debunk my rba section woes:
When using the subtank do you get airbubbles from both sides or just one? I find one side of my rba section seems to put out a lot more bubbles (especially when i do a primer pull) could one of my juice channels be a little messed up or something? or do you only get bubbles from one side moreso

Probably a wicking issue. You want just enough cotton on the sides to lay down on the deck (but not down in the threads). And you want it even on both sides.

that makes sense
edit: after fiddling around with the wicks some more the air bubbles are coming up from both sides pretty nicely
:toast: yay!

I like that we are all trying small variances in our wicking techniques. Keeps me from having to try everything...lol

I haven't tried the thinning technique yet. Haven't had to yet. I'm always looking for simple, easy and quick ways to help new vapers get going. Insert wick, cut on angle, wet with juice and press into place....that's about as time consuming as most noobs around here will tolerate. No time to thin tails and they get PO'd if their wicking doesn't last a week. It's hard to compete with the ease of putting a cig in their mouth and flick'n a bic.

Just tried the thinned wick on a light wire par. Didn't like how it turned out. Rebuilt a straight 24. Must've gotten a bit too enthusiastic. Think I fried the insulator on this Raiju. Not blamin' the wick. Tasting plastic. The first one lots of vapor, normal internal density, thinned leads. But got to hot for my taste. The straight dropped the internal density slightly closer to the tails. Got better to good output. Then not much more than a doz. pulls in tastes off. Not charred but very sloggy. Couldn't clear the wick dry on a fresh install. On a hybrid so no contact issues. Swapped VTC4's. Nothing apparently wrong. Perfectly firing t.m.c.'s. Good threading all around. No apparent overheating. Wick slogged on a .3Ω build. So setting this one aside. Not going to come to any rash conclusions. It's been a while since I wicked this thin. To the hot baths and ultrasonic for a better dissection.

Normally I wouldn't have even bothered to post this. One of many that didn't cut the mustard. Just annoyed if I wasted an insulator on this. Ironic your statement was.

Good luck.

:)

I think these OCC coils are fantastic. I just got my second Subtank, so now I own a Nano and a Mini. I haven't ordered any coils yet though, still on the ones that came with it. I've tried both the 1 ohm and .5 ohm coils and I like the .5 more. I thought I'd like the 1 more since I usually don't sub ohm but with the .5 coil, I can keep the wattage really low and still get huge clouds and flavor but it's not the same with the 1 ohm coil at higher wattages. Can anyone explain why this is?

What mod are you using? If it doesn't have step down that could account for what you are experiencing.

OCC coils. I wonder why we use redundant acronyms so frequently. ATM machine, NIC card, Pin number, UPC code, the list goes on and on, and now thanks Kanger, OCC coils, Organic Cotton Coil coils.

Heat flux and heat capacity. The thickness (gauge) of the wire, how many wraps, and diameter of the coil determines the resistance. Essentially, the 0.5ohm coil is built for higher wattages while the 1.2 ohm is not.

1.2ohm OCC:

Coil: ID is .135", 5 wraps spaced, leg length averages .312" each (max), .227 (min), wire physically measures .010" dia, electrically measures 6.45 ohms/ft. Wicking density is very heavy and cut to .480" long.

.5 ohm OCC:

Coil: ID is .135", 5 wraps spaced, leg length averages .312" each (max), .227 (min), wire physically measures .012" dia, electrically measures 3.13 ohms/ft. Wicking density is very heavy and cut to .480" long.

Something interesting about the wire specs above. The 1.2 ohm coil has a wire diameter equal to 30awg but a res value close to 29. The .5 ohm coil has a wire diameter in between 28 & 29awg but a res value nearing 26!!!

Talk about throwing heat flux values off? How about out the window? Who knows what this mystery china wire is.

damn this rba section is driving me crazy, some days i can get it working properly, otherdays its a crapshoot
i know max vg juices are my issue, but still :p
i think this tank is just too finicky for me :( maybe a goblin is more up my alley, but i prefer single coil
delta 2 looks pretty good too, but just found out its chromed brass apparently

The Delta II is pure stainless. No chrome on it. Works great if you get the rba section with it (extra $12, which sucks)

If you have issues with the Mini rba, you will just carry those troubles to the Delta rba. Technique in wicking is the same with both. The Delta II is harder to coil due to odd bend in legs required. You can by coils pre-made for the rba, but hard to find anything lower than 1.2 ohm. Both of these tanks (Mini & Delta) are great units. Well made, great air flow options and machined perfectly. Just my experience. I run a 0.5-0.7 ohm coil on these. Delta II at 28-32w, the Mini at 23-25.5w.

When i purchased this tank i thought it would provide better flavor than my Atlantis and it does. Secondly i thought the stock OCCs would last longer and i don't think they do. I was running the 1.2 ohm at about 16.5 w. I put it in Sunday and i only actually got 4 days out of it. I started getting frequent dry hits, though it tasted fine when it wasn't dry. I just hate the feeling i get from dry hits, so i put in a new coil. 70vg/30pg juice.

The old coil seemed gunked up, so i washed it with warm water and saved it. I'm letting it dry out. I might see if it has anymore life when the present coil needs replacing.
