Reducing nicotine will help as mentioned. Also, forgive me if it's been asked and I missed it. Is this your first vape? Have you used anything else before? Like played around with your friends setup?
I've tried a few others here and there, I couldn't tell you now what they are thoug . This is my first real one that's mine.

I reduced the nicotone drastically and there is no burn really at al . The flavor is almost heavy like but nothing I can't handle. I'm still messing with the settings and trying to work out what fits best. Still not getting the most out put but its helped me avoid cigarettes last night enough to make me happy. :) I'd like better out put but I just gotta figure out between watts and temp (which I've not really messed with) which is best.

Yeah, stick with the wattage mode and don't mess with Temp Control until you get things figured out.
The method I advocate for getting your vape right is to start with adjusting the airflow to get the draw (pull) the way you like it, turn the power down and try it. Adjust the power up until you get a vape you like. You'll know when you've gone too far on the power by the heat/harshness of the vape.

I'm new to vaping and my friend set me up with the Kangertech Topbox Nano, which doesn't have all that much readily available online outside of reviews. I smoke cigarettes half a pack and day and am trying to quit.

So, my questions are

What settings would anyone recommend because it burns. I have to take such little hits that its like I'm not even putting any vapor out. They told me because of my smoking to get 18mg liquid, could this be why?

I'm still fuzzy on the settings. It has watt and temperature control, I have them both down as low as they go because it is to much to use. Any advice would be helpful...I have tried reading as much as possibly but I am bew to this and I don't understand half of what people are saying so if it could be dummed down for me I would appreciate it lol. Thank you so much!
I haven't read all of the replies so I'm not sure if the advise I'm going to give has already been given. First I will say that you will learn VERY quickly. Everything seems overwhelming at first but with this forum, Google and YouTube it will all fall into place. I have been vaping for only three months and I've sort of got my head around the basics.

So, first, someone posted that you MUST direct lung. That is not correct. What they probably meant is that you should be direct lung inhaling with the 0.5 coil installed. The 0.5 coil is a 'sub ohm' coil and therefore needs to be used at higher wattages (I think Kanger recommend 15w-60w? I could be wrong on that) and generally is used with direct lung hits. What you really need if you want to mouth to lung, like a cigarette is the 1.5 coil. If you use this coil with the tightest air hole setting and say a 6mg to 12mg nic and at wattages between 10w and 25w you should be fine. It did take me a couple of weeks to take a decent vape. I remember not getting past a two second inhale, but I was using 18mg so..

The Topbox is an awesome starter kit. I wish I had been given that advise. I ended up with an iStick 20w (which is great if you don't care to get into sub ohm and TC) and I had to buy a more advance mod within a few weeks.

I hope you work it out and stick to it. Vaping is the ONLY way I could quit cigarettes.

Good luck :).

Just a thought. Is there any chance you are using a nickel coil on wattage mode? I know ZERO about temp control so I don't know what affect that would have but I know it's not a good thing. @suprtrkr ? Any advice?
It's possible, but unlikely it would fire. Most Ni coils are too low to fire in wattage mode.
