What a lead: "Isn't it time you weaned yourself off them?"

That ticked me off a bit. She's not smoking analogs. She's not endangering her child with secondhand smoke. She is being a positive role model for others that want to switch.

I realize that some people intend to stop vaping once they can get far enough from analogs to make it realistic. I am not one of those people though, nor are many others.

I don't understand why some of you are upset? For one, this is getting the word out there. Not only about e-cigs, but that they work. Yeah, it's a little tacky to say, "it worked for this big Hollywood star, so it'll work for you too!" But that's the kind of stuff people buy in to. If it exposes a handful of people to the world of vaping then I applaud the author of this article for his/her efforts.

I wanted to complain about just that: it was tacky, you are spot on. Then again it's the Daily Mail, so that's par for the course. At least she wasn't given the PV by aliens or something. :)

I certainly do not wish to hijack the thread, but it does open up another point of discussion. Need to stop calling them JUST stop-smoking aids and focus on the smoking-ALTERNATIVE side of things.

I dropped one habit and picked up another, which I'm perfectly fine with. The new habit is fun and enjoyable. That's a good message to put out as well as my fun habit's ability to completely extricate analogs from my life.

Habits can be good! :)

If the headline had been worded in a positive way, e.g. "Heigl still smoke-free after 9 months," the word might be getting out even further.

I see nothing negative about the title, nor the content in the article. She "weaned" herself off of analogs. So did I. There's no lying there that I can see.

I just don't understand why you're mad at a positive e-cig article that thousands/millions will potentially see on sites like TMZ. (I saw it on there earlier today)

I can't argue with that.
It's still generally a positive article for us. Personally I have no intention to stop vaping but if others do I see no reason why they shouldn't. More important to me is that most of the articles I read now are generally positive. People also seem to be much more informed about vaping.

It's the media's sensationalist spin that rubs me the wrong way. It grabs more eyes the way it was posted, but does not really lend itself as positively as it could be, and also imply that she is unable to stop. Plus I've been reading all about "Chernobyl 2.0" going in in Japan right now, which makes me sad/frustrated and kinda disgusted with the "Inside Edition" type of "news". You nailed it, TMZ. Something I personally would never watch.

Then again I am no marketing whiz-kid either.

The actual content of the article is not really represented in the byline. After reading the header, I thought it was going to be a dismissive article about PVs. I was pleasantly suprised to find this not to be the case.

I'm a grammar nazi sometimes too, this teeny tiny nag gets filed with those.... I'm really not that uptight, I can just forsee more negative coming out of this same "media" if we don't get a little more militant (I found this thread in the Legislation section of the forums, so you can see where my mindset was when I happened upon the article).

Your more positive leanings in getting the "TMZ crowd" to a better understanding of PVs will get alot more mileage than my little tiny gripe. :)

EDIT: now eating a 5-pack of "chill pills", with my Dr Pepper and DK-TAB.... Sorry I got so worked up!

Are we looking at the same title?

The one I am look at reads, "Isn't it time you weaned yourself off them?"

1. I have no problem with the content of the article. Never said I did. The article is positive.
2. Never said that the headline is lying. The headline is negative and it helps to perpetuate the myth that the goal must be complete abstinence from nicotine.
3. The headline is written in such a way to sound accusatory.
  • The pronoun "you" refers to Katherine Heigl.
  • The pronoun "them" refers to e-cigarettes, not to tobacco cigarettes.
  • The writer of the headline is chiding Heigl for failing to wean herself off e-cigarettes.
4. I would prefer to see the headline written to draw attention to Katherine's incredible accomplishment -- she hasn't smoked in 9 months -- instead of sneering at her for still using an e-cigarette 9 months after she quit smoking. So. What.
5. A large number of people seem to think that the object of using e-cigarettes is to cure nicotine addiction -- including the FDA, and that is a problem. A BIG problem. If that's the "intended use" then e-cigarettes are a drug and the FDA can rightfully remove them from the market.
6. I would like to see the world come to understand that the fact that we no longer inhale smoke means that we have quit smoking.
7. I would like to see the world understand that not smoking is good enough. We do not need to become tobacco-free to be healthy. We do not need to become nicotine-free to be healthy.
8. I would like to see the world become educated enough on the issues that folks stop asking us, "Well, when are you going to give that up?" referring to our much safer alternative.
9. I would also like to see the world come to understand that there is nothing shameful about using nicotine. If there is, then all the folks who line up at Starbucks every morning for an eye-opening dose of caffeine should be ashamed of themselves, too.
10. I would like to see the world understand that for many of us, stopping the use of our alternative product will drive us right back to smoking -- and that would be a bad thing.
