What you need to know about e-cigarettes, post-Katherine Heigl
Pretty presumptuous for this article to claim that they just told you everything you need to know about ecigs when they're so sadly misinformed themselves.

I just commented and told them a few MORE things they didn't know.

'd like to point out that there are MUCH cheaper and BETTER e-cigs than the ones mentioned in this story. There are many companies on the internet that sell personal vaporizers and accessories, pre-mixed nicotine juice and DIY flavorings for making your own juice. All of the nicotine juice sold by American & Chinese companies contains levels of nicotine less than 36mg/ml. You *can* buy up to 100mg/ml raw nicotine juice for subsequent dilution with PG or VG. If you would like to learn more about e-cigs and reputable suppliers please visit http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com

There is just no way one can say 'x' amount of nic juice = 'x' number of cigarettes. Everyone inhales cigarette smoke AND e-cig vapor at different rates and intensities. Further, studies have shown that the nicotine in burned tobacco reaches the brain centers responsible for the pleasure one gets from smoking faster than it does with vaporized PG/VG/Nicotine mixture. One thing that is for sure, e-cig vapor is not as harmful to the primary or secondary recipient as burned tobacco products. It doesn't take years of studies to understand this-common logic dictates it.

When I saw your handle/name as the last person to post in this thread I wondered if you had something useful to contribute.
As expected, you didn't let me down.
That's OK. I've offered worse in the past. Much worse...and just recently too.

We may not agree on everything ... but were both human :lol:

It's awaiting moderation:

@crazy
Water is used to make plastics, as well. Should we also avoid that? Propylene glycol is approved by the FDA for use in many consumable products - it's considered safe and is used in medical applications, as well.

@tuesdayswithmorrie
So, I guess Katherine should just go back to smoking?
-
There is absolutely nothing in e-cigarettes that support the notion that they are worse than tobacco cigarettes. The FDA only found trace amounts of carcinogens - at parts per TRILLION - and those same exact amounts are considered acceptable for the nicotine patch. If those amounts are a concern, they better remove the patch from the market, as well. The FDA knows that just because something contains some trace carcinogens it doesn't mean it causes cancer. Just about EVERYTHING contains carcinogens - what matters is HOW MUCH.
-
Gums and patches are MEANT to be used short term, but everyone knows many people use them long term. And the pharmaceutical companies are at this very moment lobbying the FDA to allow them to be used long-term. Nicotine, minus the smoke, is a mild stimulant and comparable to caffeine. If you shouldn't be using caffeine because of increased risk to previous conditions, then you should avoid nicotine, as well.
-
The FDA couldn't find anything worse than trace amounts of POSSIBLE carcinogens and NON-TOXIC levels of one chemical. That should have been GOOD news, yet they (and public health groups funded by pharmaceutical companies) warn smokers to stay away. Why?
-
So, let's recap. No toxic levels of chemicals found, no harmful levels of carcinogens found, they contain only FDA-approved ingredients and there have been no reports of illness or injury associated with e-cigarette use reported by the FDA in the 3 years they have been on the U.S. market.

Where is the fire for all of this alarm?

Awaiting approval by blog owner:

@tuesdayswithmorrie: Here is some interesting information from the book, Nicotine Safety and Toxicity, edited by Neal Benowitz, who currently serves on the FDA's Tobacco Advisory Committee. "...it is components of cigarette smoke other than nicotine that are responsible for acute ischemia...the large Health Lung Study in patients with chronic obstructive lung disease found no increase of carciovascular disease in smokers using nicotine gum for as long as 5 years.... Thus, all of the clinical trials to date support the idea that nicotine is not a significant risk factor for cardiovascular events even in patients with coronary heart disease." The web sites casaa.org and tobaccoharmreduction.org both have informative write-ups on nicotine.

The American Council on Science and Health's (ACSH) Dr. Gilbert Ross stated, "This is a major health breakthrough for this young lady, and it’s likely to add years to her life and make her more healthy." Dr. Ross also criticizes doctors who make ludicris statements about the safety of e-cigarettes.

There was a link in the ACSH story to an article in the New York Daily News. http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyl..._for_kicking_butts_electronic_cigarettes.html

I left this comment, but the dern comment system truncated it right before the word "combustion."

Dr. Len Horovitz and Dr. Jonathan Whiteson need to do their research before speaking out There are no chemicals leaching into the vapor from the plastic casing. Dr. Murray Laugesen of Health New Zealand conducted testing in 2008 and 2009 on the Ruyan brand of electronic cigarettes and pronounced the vapor "harmless, inhaled or exhaled." After the FDA's misleading press release regarding tests they conducted on 18 cartridges, NJOY commissioned an independent lab to study the vapor from its products, specifically looking for carcinogens. The lab found no carcinogens and no toxins. On the other hand, the smoke that Katherine Heigl used to inhale contains numerous toxins and carcinogens. Dr. Whiteson apparently missed the part of the interview where Heigl enumerated all the FDA-approved smoking cessation products that did not work for her. By replacing her smoking with vapor, she has eliminated tar, carbon monoxide, particulates, and thousands of chemicals created by the process of combustion. These are absent in vapor because nothing is burned. It borders on malpractice for any doctor to suggest that it is healthier to stick with smoking instead of switching to a less harmful alternative.
