hello, I recently purchased a kayfun from tobecco. the kayfun is very nice and came in pre cleaned. I also have an EHpro kayfun. both nice looking devices. the ehpro version was soaked in alchohol for many days. 2 weeks worth of time. afyer that it was boiled im distilled water for 30 minutes. I did this process 3 times. once with dawn soap. tried the kayfun and it tasted metallic/oily. so then I tried that all again with the boiling, I even brushed the kayfun with the soap In hot water. same flavor. I gave it one more chance. boiled it much longer the last time, ran it through 4 cycles of boiling distilled water and soap. finished the last boil with clean distillied water. same thing, no change in flavor. I got the tobecco clone and an ultrasonic cleaner. I put both products in the ultra sonic last night for about 24 mimute cycles each, drying and wiping the product after each cycle. I could see stuff coming off the tobecco for sure. anyway, I was up cleaning yesterday from 8:00pm to 1:30am. I wasnt going to be nice about the cleaning. I got serious with my products. the mix I used was 50/50 distilled water and distilled white vinegar with a non toxic degreasing product. I finally got it all put back together by 2:30 and was vaping on a 1.5 ohm coil on both products with propper wicking. they both have a metallic flavor. when I compare the same flavor in my protank, it taste much sweeter, more flavorful. I am just not impressed with the kayfun :( I am using am innokin itaste and a nemesis mech mod clone by hcigar for testing.

what is wrong? what do I need to change? why do these kayfuns suck?? people say the kayfun tastes better than the pro tank, but when? :(

Hello, gafoob. You went nuts with the cleaning! lol You didn't say what you used for a wick but I assume you used cotton with a micro coil. For me, cotton produces the cleanest taste. If you used silica, did you dry burn it? Hard to compare with a Protank because most run Protanks at 2.5 ohms. Your 1.5 ohm coil may be burning too hot for best taste. Another possibility is that you bought a Tobeco Kayfun made of chrome over brass instead of stainless steel. I believe the clones that now sell for less than $20 are brass covered with chrome.

I got a metallic taste from my Russian (actually 2 of them) for the first tank or two then it was fine. I can not explain it unless there was something that my cleaning efforts did not get out of the air passages or some other nook / cranny I could not see. The devices now work and taste fine, I just had to put up with a funky taste in the beginning.
I cleaned them in alcohol (isopropyl), Dawn dish soap, tap water -- not distilled, and soaked in alcohol with the O-rings off. Nothing seemed to work.
Also wonder if some of the clones have a little leeching of the metal due to lower quality?? I do not want to start a ..... storm of angst from that comment, but just opining...... it does seem odd leeching would occur so quickly though.

I rebuilt my pro tank at 1.4 ohms using cotton wick. now remember, I have 2 kayfuns here, the tobecco one was labled as 100% stainless steel. I also have one from ehpro aswell as my kayfuns I do have a 100% stainless steel aqua which I get the same effect from. it was also from ehpro. now I only use 100% cotton for wicking too, so thats not going to be my case either :(

You can get a PMMA kit if you think it's the cheaper SS But my money is on the coil wick setup
$5.12 Spare Parts for Kayfun v3.1 Atomizer - PMMA at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

yeah I only used the chimney of that set i currently own to test the flavor, thrn I moved onto putting it together and testing it like a normal kayfun. same flavor both ways. it might be my coil setup, but im not too sure. when I dry vaped (meaning I sucked through the kayfun without a coil or wick or juice, just to see if I could smell/taste excess oils or something.) I could get a noticeable hint of some metallic flavor. maybe like someone else said, I basically have to break it in. right now I can deal with the taste, its not bad, but its not better than the protank, its a bit muted.

Few things:
100% disassemble
Natural Orange cleaner in Ultrasonic
Expect time to allow Tank to season
Expect time for Wick/coil to season

* Tank Taste issue - DO NOT return e-liquid to original container. This will contaminate all e-liquid in the container. All future attempts will taste off. Tank will be recontaminated.

Try a Plastic/Acrylic Drip Tip - It may simply be you don't like SS

Yes a Kayfun in MUCH better than most tanks. No it is not for everyone.

Did you take them completely apart, 510 screw out and all the blocks off. Sometimes there is crap in the center post that may not scrub or vibrate out.

My tobeco works great with a vertical coil and degummed hemp fiber.

Good Luck!!! :toast:

I have been making coils for a while now. im not new to that. I rebuild my protank all the time too. I have disassembled the tank all the way for a thorough cleaning.

Sounds to me like your cotton is too tight in the coil. Try keeping it loose and give it another go.

Ditch your current coil/wick. If it was too tight, that flavor isn't going anywhere so you'll need a new coil/wick. Make sure you torch/dryburn your coil also.

no results.

EDIT: Added quote and I always dry burn coil before wicking my cotton.
