Kayfun not that fun?

Hey folks. I just received a tobeco kfl+ clone yesterday. I know, I know. Clones are the devil. That said, I've gone through several different coil and wick setups in this thing and its just not as satisfying a vape as my aspire clearo. Am I crazy or something? From what I've been reading and hearing, the kayfun family is supposed to be one of, if not, the most foolproof and enjoyable RBA there is. So you know what I've thrown in as far as coils and wicks, all micro coils of varying diameters and resistance with 30 guage xanthal and even silica and cotton wicks. I haven't tried any of the more exotic twisted wire coils but if I'm not getting a satisfying vape out of micros, why try further?

You're not crazy, you're just not getting it to work properly. I use several evods, and will continue to do so for convenience reasons, but the Kayfun blows them away in flavor and vapor production.
(I've never tried an Aspire, so I can't give you a better comparison than the evod.)

My first Kayfun clone coil was great. The second through fifth attempts: not so much. IMO: keep at it. You won't be sorry.

FWIW, I used a 30ga standard coil with cotton, with a little less than 1/8 clearance between the air vent and the coil.

Problems I've had: poor coil connection, coil too close to the vent, too much cotton, and, of course, my lack of skill in the coil making department.

Im sorry to hear you are having a poor experience with this topper. Unlike you I have had nothing but a great experience with my Russian. Currently, I have a 2ohm 32 gauge twisted micro coil in it. What exactly is wrong with your vape or is it just an overall experience?

It takes time. I'm still new to both the kfc and russian 91. Currently have each of them running a 1.8, 28 gauge micro coil built using a 2.25mm drill bit. Ten wraps. Using organic cotton for wicking, organic makes a huge difference. Getting the thickness of the wick just right makes all the difference. All I can say from my experience is this. Practice practice practice. It takes time to master these things. Once you get it right though, you'll never look back, except to ask yourself why you didn't do this sooner.

An RBA cannot be built Fool Proof as it is in the hands of the Purchaser to set it up correctly.

I am FAR from being an expert and will never self proclaim as one, but I can tell you, once you figure out what you are Not doing right and correct, you Will see the Amazing Difference.
I would not take Clone effect into account on the Kayfun:
1) There are probable 20 Very good working variations now
2) The Original has once again been updated
This is one device that is being driven toward perfection rather than replacement.

You may be missing on:
coil design
Coil to Deck Spacing
Wick Density
Wick length
Wick placement

Not much else to concentrate on.

My 2 KFL+ and 2 Rocket Tanks(Kayfun/Russian clones) All are capable of Chain Vaping and never flood. It seems to be 20% Coil / 80% wick in getting good function.

Don't get me wrong. It took some doing to get the coils and wicks setup to produce a good vape. I consider myself lucky with the ones I got going but the ACTUAL vape just seemed to be, lacking. I don't know. I dialed in the draw to my liking with the afc screw. The space between the deck and coil was literally a hair spaced so there wasn't a chance of shorting. The different coils consistently fired up from center out like they should. The wicks pulled as they should. No leaks, no gurgles, all good. It just seems to lack the flavor and vapor I'm getting out of my Davide BDC with aerotank base. Maybe its too much flavor. Not sure but this is confusing as the reviews for the kfl's is almost 100% positive. Maybe I need to mess with it further.

maybe its a power issue? what is it sitting on? what are your settings?
What ohms are the coils you wrap comming in at?

I've been at it for a few weeks and have found my happy place with 28ga kanthal at 5/64 inner diameter around 1.6ohms

Its on an MVP 2.0. My coils are consistently coming in at 1.8 ohms. Putting varying wattages from 8-11 to try and nail it down.

its not hard. mount it as you do now (maybe a bit looser) then twist the coil up. if you are using a 1/16 drill bit it should slip right into the airhole..

You said your coil was 'hair spaced' off the deck. Have you tried lifting it up a bit? I usually keep mine at 1-2mm, but you could go a little higher. It'll affect the throat hit too.

AH my brada, The wick setup I asked you about is so much better than regular. No flooding dry hits and lots of flavor without worry.

Yeah man It was a little muted for the first couple hours but now it works better than the regular setup I had before. Pretty stoked on it, gonna continue using this method from now on.

Maybe I should clarify my "hair space" measurement. The center of the coil is approximately 1 mm off the deck as per my super accurate eyeball measurement device. I've tried different spacing but it just seemed "off" for what its supposed to be.

The time could be it. My patience is severely lacking so sitting for a few hours even after priming the wick just doesn't sound right.

I juice the wick after cleaning and reassemble. I fill and vape. Its true the fist 20 min or s0 its not as good, but still goodenough. as long as its not gurgly or dry I'm happy enough for that period. it only get better from there (until the dry hits come back from burning through all the juice!). I always chocked this time up to getting the peroxide used to bleach cotton balls out.
