Kayfuns are all about the wick. Sorry, but if you are burning coils without being empty something is wrong with the build
I went through the same process.
I have one or four, between one 3.1 and my three 91%, depending on how you look at it. Took me a couple of months of them being my all day vape to perfect it.
Even with me really being a genesis diehard with no kayfun bias (i have almost stopped using them) have to say that any problems with a burnt wick are not a fault of the atty.
Its not a bad thing.
This is a common misconception, with nets its all about the coil. Believe me I tried dozens of different wick variation and every time the cotton would burn inside the coil. First try with a gapped coil (no pinching) and it worked for the first time. This is all with home brew nets. They are different than clean burning flavoring e juices.
Heating/pinching should be outlawed for net vapors. I wasted a month of my life trying to get that to work.
I just built a KFL for a Newminster #47 net in 15 minutes flat with the gapped coil. I can't believe it worked the first time, and the flavor is incredible. Side by side to the Kanger Aerotank the KFL is superior by far.
