I notice in my box there is a clear tank-like thing with baggies of silica etc in it. can this be used in place of the entire stainless steel tank section or am I limited to stainless steel with the option of a plastic mid section?

Yes thats the full size plastic tank.

holy cow, so even if i did crack the other this should work. does plastic diminish taste?

I dont think so. And you probably didnt crack the other tank. If anything the threads got mangled. They should screw on nice and smooth. If you feel any resistance stop and try again. Only the last few turns will have some resistance to them.

I have the nano - which is *only* a plastic tank - I don't notice it diminishing the taste of anything. I just have to be patient with the threading and make sure I don't force it. Once it's lined up right it's no problem. It's a *&^%$# to open straight from the box though. It's screwed down so tight! I honestly couldn't figure out how I was going to take it apart. I just kept trying and it eventually unscrewed.

Wrap a rubber band around the top cap when you unscrew. I read that in another thread awhile ago and it totally works.

Do you happen to have one of these hanging around in the kitchen? ;)

My problem is i can never get my wick through the coil without twisting it .then im trying to fluff the ends. If i dont twist it and it goes straight in im using almost see through cotten there is so little.

I always gently twist the wick towards the way it was rolled when threading the coil. I never fluff the ends but merely trim them and then tamp them down a bit using a precision screwdriver after juicing the wick and folding them down to the sides of the insulator blocks. Just enough so that the wick clears the airflow channels.

Man, I am on some sort of a roll today! :?:

When I was little someone called one of those a "rubber husband" ... and that's what I call it. I don't have one but it's the first thing I thought of when I couldn't get it unscrewed! I have to get another :)
