My dad had sleep apnea. He is a truck driver for USPS bulk mail (18 wheeler) and they REQUIRED that he take care of the sleep apnea in order to keep working there, or he probably wouldn't have gone to the doc either. He actually had to have surgery.. they removed his uvula, and not sure if they did anything in the nose area... (Maybe don't mention surgery to hubby, Look, or he will REALLY not want to go to the doctor!) He now uses a CPAP and doesn't snore.

CPAP stops snoring, ask my wife! I was waking up 1 or 2 nights a week with skipped heartbeats. That's scary stuff.

I finally had a sleep test done and was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. My apnea rate was 64. That means I was having 64 events an hour where I stopped breathing for more than 10 seconds or so. I was falling asleep watching TV and it's a miracle I could drive on a long trip without problems.

CPAP straightened me out. I don't snore and I don't fall asleep watching TV unless I stay up after midnight to watch a movie.

Gasping during sleep is a sign because you stop breathing and your brain wakes you up gasping for breath. Dry throat can cause sleep apnea events since a dry throat can stick together and shut off your throat. 17 inch or greater neck is probably a giveaway that sleep apnea is occurring. When you gain weight, your airway does, too.

It's a serious ailment that can lead to a night where you don't wake up again, forever! Alcohol and sleeping aids only contribute to the situation and prevent your brain from waking you up soon enough. It's a dangerous condition.

Bolding is mine.

I can't stress this enough ladies, (and gentlemen) :D On another forum a woman just lost her husband, the autopsy didn't really show anything, and she believes his sleep apnea is the cause of his death. I really wish my brother would go to the Dr. and in my heart I know between his morbid obesity and what I believe is sleep apnea I will be surprised if he lives another 10 yrs. He has 4 kids and if he doesn't take care of this he will leave them way to soon. Don't be an ... like my brother you and your family are too important. Take care of it and if you need to use the CPAP machine.

When we moved in here 18 years ago.. Mike had to go on a business trip for his brand new company (1 day after we moved in!) It was scary being alone in a new place out in the country and not knowing another living soul! I couldn't get to sleep with out him snoring so I brought our Akita in the bedroom. He snored worse then Mike!
18 years Makes a difference! Now it's so loud that I need another room!

Roll husband over on his side that is facing his nightstand and handcuff him into place! Of course, that might only work until he needs to get up to go.....

Other than that, we've tried sprays, nose thingies, and now when I sleep deep, I snore. Even my Maltese snores like a freight train! She sleeps on her back with all 4 paws in the air.

My suggestion is on the nights that it is so bad, go to your guest room. If you don't have one, the couch? Not much help....sorry.

I heard a trick for people with back problems. They need to sleep on their back with a pillow under their lets. Anyway to keep them from turning on their sides you sew a tennis ball to a tee shirt on each side..it's uncomfortable and they roll back on their back.
this should work on snorers..sew the ball to the back of a tee and see if it keeps them off their backs!
Of course in Mike's case it would just wake him up and tee him off!
