I thought Rule 34 was defined on the internet, though. Sure there were fetishes long before the internet, but it didn't really get weird until the internet came along. And more specifically, until 4chan came along.
Rule 34 was defined/codified on the internet (yes, well before the world wide web, and thus well before 4chan). All the internet did was be able to collect them into a semi-organized mass on the alt.* hierarchy of usenet. The first time I heard about Rule 34 it was referring to wading through the UUENCODEd pictures on alt.sex.binary.* before Netscape had even been release and html was still a fledgling word-processing markup "language"...
