Just FYI to all of those out here who may encounter these sorts of warranties in the future:
Both Kodak and Xerox were successfully sued over this exact sort of warranty ploy...and they lost. Their argument in court was that the cost of their consumables were designed to finance the warranty, and the government basically told them that they were prohibited from doing just that.
These sorts of warranty conditions/provisos/restrictions (whatever you want to call them) are illegal.
Most companies that offer warranties under such onerous terms are scum. Your first defense is simply not to deal with them.
Your second line of defense is, if you already got stuck with their product, is to contact the company and inform them that their company is violating the law with such restrictions, and that they should change their restrictions and ethically honor respectable warranty terms.
If they refuse, sue them.
