So, I have been happily walking about my hometown with my shiny new 808 in my pocket and openly vape outside in public. Having never ever seen one of these in my town I imagine if it were me I would stare at someone that had a "smoking" stick with a bright light on the end too.

I was hoping that someone could explain the need for the light. Is it so when your batt dies you know it is dead (seems silly... it's dead when it no longer works, right)? Is the light connected with the internal "workings"?

Mostly, can you buy Led-less batteries anywhere ... they would be much less obtrusive. The weird staring is making me anxious. That's not my thing but you get what I mean...

While I am loving my new analog free life some aspects of vaping in public make me feel a bit like a circus freak. I want to be a good ambassador yet not draw so much attention to myself...

Anyone else ever feel like this or having any thoughts?

Um, what's the issue? A light that can be easily covered with tape, a pin cap, or a plastic cup.

I realize that my hand already covers the light, but most folks don't have hands my size, but I never thought covering the light was a big deal.

I have seen 510 batteries without LED's, but never thought concealing the light was an issue.

Learn something new every day.

The plastic "ash" end pops off most batteries without much difficulty. You can desolder the LED or just pack in something opaque to block the light.

Looks like I am going to dust off the soldering iron on at least one. Thanks - I would not have known to do that.

Yeah, if I had larger hands I would just cover it. I have one with a red light that I really like and maybe as more people become aware of them I will feel less self conscious or less neurotic... :)

I personally think you are being a bit paranoid, unless you are walking about the town at night. I go out on break with the real smokers and nobody has commented on my green or blue light because, in the daylight, you can't even see them. I have to hold my hand over it to even get the slightest hint of glow when I'm out in the sun. In the dark, they can be seen perfectly, but I've still not really had people stare at me to make me that uncomfortable.

Maybe you just look funny? :)

LOL - maybe it was the bad hair day. Daytime - no one seems to notice but yes, I do go out at night. Went to the grocery store so I was loadin' my bags in the car (it was just before dusk) looked up and had about 4 different people staring at me.. Two very unfriendly and a couple of college students who just looked curious...

I am a bit surprised that others don't find it bothersome but then again I was always the kid who hid at the back of the class and tried to blend in with the wall...

no worries. have soldering iron and a sharpie can once again become anonymous...

Oh, I see, it's just a personal thing. Ok, I understand. yeah just use one of the suggestions to remove the light.

The LED is mounted on a PCB. I don't know if it's a through-hole part or not. I'd be extremely careful trying to remove it if I were you ... don't want to ruin a battery, ya know.

If it were me bothered by it, I'd take a sharpie to the inside of the plastic ash-tip cover rather than messing with the PCB inside.

Back in the old days, the LED was used for a variety of reasons, and the microprocessor decided what it would do. Multiflash for cleaning cycle, charge start, charge end, connection made, that sort of thing. Now it seems to just be a holdover from the automatic battery days. Personally, I'd just as soon they started getting rid of them from the new manual batts altogether. Wouldn't mind a vibrate function though, to let me know I hit the button right.
