Hi Everyone,
I've been watching this thread with some :pop: while (sorry cant find the vaping emoticon)
anyway, I just saw this video from Grimmgreen
LET'S TEAR APART SOME CARTOMIZERS - YouTube

This got me thinking that we could possible take one of the many LR SR cartos we have just lying around and use parts of the inside to make a wick...
I havnt tried it myself yet, and was hoping for some word from you guys before I even try, but the idea is that i have so many cartos lying around that I want to use them for something :)

Anyway, sorry if this is a really dumb idea...I'm not as skilled or knowledgable as you guys, but hopefully this can spark something somewhere and make someone think of some other way to get that juice vaping :)

L

I have read everything in this thread looking for a good wick alternative to silica and/or cotton, just to make sure that SS mesh was something I should avoid or not. So much interesting information here, but I still haven't come to any conclusion at all. It got me reading the threads on other possible wick materials. Bamboo or hemp seem to be the least dangerous. Most of this has freaked me out too much try any of it.

I will hide in the corner until the battle is over, as usual. I hope the good guys win. I am now going cold turkey again, thanks everybody. Is there no safe alternative to smoking?

Hemp is great in a dripping atty, but I've become frustrated with it in my Genesis-style atty (aga-t2) because it has difficulty keeping up wicking with heavy vaping. It rarely dry-hits, but the vapor just isn't what it is with cotton, silica or SS.

I'm going to experiment a bit with hybrid SS-cotton wicks again, because I had good success last time but gave it up when I learned how to setup a good SS wick. It's a very viable alternative, as are hemp and bamboo in the right RBA.

But obviously, we are not all coming down with those symptoms......

Maybe not, but just the idea that 'chromium oxide may form on SS wicks, and this might not be a good thing' was the reason for this thread. Would zinc dissolving in our eliquid be a problem? I'd think it would affect the flavor, if nothing else.

Interesting idea! Of course, not a good plan economically, but if it works well, great for extra cartos laying around that we don't plan on using, or in a pinch if we run out of wicking material.

Not sure exactly the material used in cartos, polyfill? Not even sure what pollyfill is. And then there is a "sock" around the coil, no idea the material, that either protects the fill from burn or provides wicking.

I haven't watched the video you shown yet on my phone, maybe that has some answers. Anyways, great idea and I'm going to try it!

@V ninja I've been following this thread and I came across this is the past but I forgot about it somehow, nichrome wire covered with silk that I saw on ebay double silk covered 30 awg . Any opinions on it? it says in wikipedia that the fibers are strong and resistant to breaking but I guess we can't know if it breaks like silica. Also the resistance is low, almost 3 ohms/foot

Yes, DO NOT use silk, period! Poisonous! Cyanide! WARNING!

EDIT: Please forgive me for being blunt about it. If you have to ask this type of question, you don't need to be re-building.

Understanding Wick Types

Found this interesting. Notice the comments on fiber glass aka silica wick, what we do with fiber glass wicking is down right scary.

? This is what I read - did I miss something?

Fiberglass

"This is rarely a concern to the user of a fire tool and more of a caution for someone that regularly makes tools from it and has to cut and shape it".

As I mentioned before, I have a short piece of Nextel braided sleeving. I just haven't fooled around with it yet; but it looks promising. The idea is to sleeve the top of the ss wick, above the tank, where the coil will be, with a piece of nextel, and wrap the coil over the sleeve. It eliminates the need to oxidize the stainless. Here is the material: Nextel Braided Ceramic Very High Temperature Sleeving

If anyone of you are interested in reading what others have found with this nextel sleeving, you can go here! The first post tells you everything you need to know to use the stuff:

I wouldn't go so far as to say shouldn't be rebuilding. shouldn't be experimenting with novel wick materials, but that applies to all of us.
