I somehow didn't hit the "Post" button on this one earlier...

mod Maintenance. Soaking RM5 in 91%, water set to boil. New LP/SL easy to rinse, wipe.
Then there's three Woodvil, two VV Grand and two Grand. Got my plans for the evening.....

My REO has been very bad to the batteries I've been using in it. Arcing, sparking, pitting, ruinous bad. Heck, the delrin/plastic thing next to the positive contact even got burned onto the positive contact blade thing. I've cleaned it up as much as I can, but it has really gotten weak. And I managed to have a magnet get flipped over while reinstalling it. I haven't been able to remove that magnet with any suggestion I've tried; boiling water, heat gun, soldering iron, acetone, freezing, . . .

I'm thinking I'll send it up to Maine for some reconditioning & repair.

I've never had any of those problems you've described. I have always been very careful in how I set my Reos up, as it is a Mech.
But If I ever did start to see the things you've described, I'd e-Mail Rob @ reosmods.com and set up a 'Spa' treatment.
Actually, I have reinstalled a magnet backwards in a Grand Door. I just ordered a new door. And now I always mark the replacement magnet with a Sharpie on the side that faces me BEFORE I use Crazy Glue.

Yea, I'll email him today.

I was very careful about the polarization of the magnets. But Murphy showed up just as I was about to place the magnet in the glue. It bounced off the counter and landed directly in the hole. I tried to remove it immediately, but no go. I've just been living with it all this time.

I had been using some high drain Panasonic batteries in it, but they apparently don't have an ideal material on the contacts. And I never pushed them to their amp limits. I have some VTC4s around, but they're already designated to specific mods. Can't seem to find new Sonys that I trust, so I ordered some XTAR wrapped VTC4s from RTDvapor. If these feel right, they'll be dedicated to the Reo. If not, then I might get some of those new AWs.

[edit]
Oh. And the magnet was in the mod, not the door. I also tried to remove the corresponding magnet from the door to flip it around, but I think I just lost patience.

Rob recommends the AW IMR 18650 3.7V 1600mAh batteries for his Grand, and that's all I use. Super_X_Drifter, a well respected REONaut who has multiple FaceBook videos on various aspects of the Reos, recently did an impromptu test of the new AW IMR 18650 2200mAh batteries. Using an LP Grand, and most likely an Odin dual coil RBA, he was rather impressed with how long and how much usage the 2200mAh AW stayed above 3.7V. But for now, I just stay with the 1600mAh that are recommended.
And if I were you, I would seriously get that Mod fixed before risking even more problems.....

You must have a burr or high spot on your contacts to cause that , most battery contacts are made of nickel for corrosion resistance , I can't see that causing a problem unless the top of the battery is dimpled , somehow you're not getting full contact and you're getting alot of current flowing through a very small area .

Oh, I've set it aside. I had some AWs, but gave them to a friend recently. I'm familiar with Super_X. It was his microcoil thread that pushed me into trying BF. Yea, I'll go ahead and get some of those new AWs for the REO. I just like the added comfort zone that the 30A Sonys provide (even though I was running 10A pannies in the REO).

That might explain it. It was one of the newer grands with the built in copper/gold upgrade. When it first started happening, I looked at it with a magnifying lense and didn't see anything obvious. But then, it doesn't take much for those trons to find a shortcut.

True, true... but if he's already shorted the firing mechanism to the point of melting/ warping the plastic housing then he should return it for repairs.

Just curious, did you buy that from Rob or off the Classies ? I ask because Tammy (IowaGal) bought a Mini/ RM2 off of the classies that had 'home repairs' that caused it to short, but she sent it to Rob and he fixed it up for her. Newer contacts and all...

I agree , it absolutely needs to be returned for repair , if the contacts are installed even at a slight angle it could cause improper contact with the battery and start arcing , best just to get it done right .

I wouldn't call it a short (well, except that it is designed to close the circuit to the battery). I tried to take a pic of the arcing, but was too lazy to get a tripod:

    reo_arc.jpg

And I already tossed the two batteries that I was using in the Reo, so I can't show you what they looked like. There was a thread in Reoville where others mentioned the problem, too. I may have posted an early pic of one of those batteries in there.

Here are the closeups of the melted portion of the housing:
    reo_housing_1.jpg

    reo_housing_2.jpg

And here I've turned the contact to show the carbon or plastic that is weakening the trons:
    reo_contact.jpg

And that's after I tried cleaning it - gently. I didn't want to remove any of the gold plating.

I'm fairly handy with many things, but I agree, it's time to let the modder himself bring it back to life for me. I've already sent an email and did the anti-spam reply, so I expect I'll get (rightfully) scolded by Rob any time now. I did make a promise in large bold letters that I would only use recommended batteries from now on.

    Off to RTD again...

Definitely a nice little box. I got one with the rubber shark skin specifically for use on the boat, but it tends to go everywhere with me.

@Bonze, the shark skin really pays off on a rocking boat! No roly-poly, slippy slidey, over the side plopping. :)

Probably better to use a skin for when laying down on car seats too.

Can't speak for that version but my Infinite clone doesn't whistle . It is a more time consuming build but the results are worth it . I have to use hemostats to place the coil , Todd used his fingers on his review but my fingertips do not fit inside the ceramic cup at all .

After watching Todd's video, it doesn't look too hard, looks easier than rebuilding Kanger or eGo style attys.

It's not hard , just takes more time to build and wick than a kayfun . I've gone to using a split wick in single coil builds on it , the loop back method worked but I find a 2.4mm coil with split wick gives me outstanding results . Build it in the .4-.5 range , open up the juice flow to keep up and it's a beast . :)

I'll let you know how my build goes when it gets here. I've heard good reviews about it so I'm anxious to try it out.

I have a second one on the way , may wind up with a third . Awesome flavor for an RTA . I need to pick up some 22 and 24ga wire to play with on mine .

Finally got to play with my Rose Retic. Single coil around a 3/32 bit with .28g. Made it at 1ohm and put it on the P3. Split my wick and so far, I am ULTRA impressed with the flavor, throat hit and vapor. Time will tell if I did it right. I'm expecting some issues to have dialed in but so far, you're right again.
