Soldering directly to an 18650 (or any battery without solder tabs) can be a bit tricky. Too long a contact with the iron and you may damage the battery. Too short and you'll get a cold solder connection that won't last. If the mod has enough room, soldering in the appropriate parts of a battery holder is a better way to go.

OT at this point but are there any good videos on replacing internal batts on regulated mods? And isn't there solderless ways to do it? :- )

Hammer and chisel?

Decent soldering irons are about $20 and there's tons of videos on how to solder. I replaced the internal Lipo battery in my VS DNA30. It's not that hard. I've seen the internals in a few Istick 20w and I wouldn't even bother with them anymore. You'll be lucky if the mod lasts as long as the battery.

In the past, I've always purchased cells with pre-attached solder tabs. High drain 18650s with tabs seem to be scarce. I would solder tabs to the battery on the bench, which makes soldering up the mod a lot easier. Know that you DO NOT heat the battery to solder to it. Prep of the battery electrodes is vital to a solid joint. After you've gotten the electrodes "tinned", you can proceed with tabs or solder tinned wire directly. Lead based, rosin core solder has worked best for me. Good luck!

Ha! I just watched that first video before posting the question wondering if there were others pertaining to mods :) Thanks! ... and to KTM

If or when the vapocalypse comes knocking, I will use my sealed mod until failure, repair if easy enough. I have a number of replaceable battery mods also, along with a few mech mods.

If all of these fail, I'll go back to building my own, like the bad old days before regulated mods were only available for the price of a mortgage payment.

I'm right there with you. The "authorities" may make it impossible for us to get decent vaping hardware. But Hammond boxes, GE, Murata, T.I. and 18650s aren't going anywhere. There should be enough of us makers to keep us all off the stinkies!

I used to race R/C cars and built my own matched battery packs with sub-c cells so I have a lot of experience soldering batteries. I've used both tabs and no tabs when building. The first video wasn't bad but you don't have to scuff the battery contact to tin it. Flux is a good idea but it can be done w/o it. You just have to make sure you don't overheat the battery. You should let the battery cool down completely before doing the other side (I usually wait about 5 mins).

The 2nd video isn't good. The guy doesn't know how to solder and at 5m 55s, that solder will break off as it's not tinned very well to the contact. You should clean and re-tin your soldering iron tip before each solder, especially when you have burnt flux on the tip like he did. He also needs a more stable 3rd hand to hold the battery. I made one like this:

So it seems that many (most?) are worried about hardware, eh? My sense tells me we could have major issues with liquid. Would it be difficult/easy/possible for nicotine to be denied us? I know many vapers are doing OMG 0mg, but not all of us!

@tearose50, would you mind talking about what you know (in terms of the Bahamas, was it?)?

I have enough nic in the freezer for 2+ years already. I may get some more...

Here's the post Ms Darling --- it's actually about Bermuda

Edit: Not liking that the reader must expand the quote to see the key remarks, so I'll put them here:

"A spokeswoman from the Ministry of Health yesterday said under current legislation nicotine is listed as a schedule three drug."

“As such, requires a prescription to obtain it unless it’s in the form of its ‘natural substance, ie tobacco,” she said. “This is the Government’s current policy, which adheres to the Pharmacy and Poisons Act, sections 25 (1)-(3) on Importation of Medicines and section 46 on Dispensing Records."

Now we need a Dr's prescription-hello

Just stumbled on to this, same thing happened in Bermuda to a Vaper of 4 yrs. He also declares this is something new but, although Bermuda is independent, may be served by the same airline. They clearly state it is Government policy now!

Here is the link:

Customs seize shocked smoker's e-cigarette | The Royal Gazette:Bermuda News

The thread it comes from is about some devices being confiscated at an airport in the Bahamas -- and what the vaper discovered on at least one airline refusing to allow devices on planes.

Sorry for the icky news, everyone. The idea of potentially not being able to travel anywhere with vape gear (even in packed luggage) is, um, more than frustrating with no appropriate words coming to mind. Even censored words are not enough to describe.

I think ejuice and/or nic base will be the first wave of attack - IF the deeming goes as read. The implementation has been estimated anywhere from immediately to 2-3 years out.

I have 5+ years nic, for two, in the freezer. And likely more eGo batts than most vendors are carrying in stock these days

Kent, alden, anyone..... I've asked before, but in your estimation, how long will the nic survive in a frozen state?

tearose, thank you.

Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego,
baby why don't we go,
Jamaica

Off the Florida Keys
there's a place called Kokomo
That's where you wanna go
to get away from it all
Bodies in the sand,
tropical drink melting in your hand
We'll be falling in love
to the rhythm of a steel drum band
Down in Kokomo

Yeah, all that except the falling in love part, dudette.

Ok, and no drinking for you.

And I dun wan sand all over me! Screw it. Let's just go to the English Pub for Bangers again, and stealth it outside. ;)

I wonder what it disrupts?

Our wallets?

Now the Beach Boys are stuck in my head!!!

Stored in an airtight glass container, nic base should be good for quite a while. It doesn't go bad all at once but gradually. I would think there would be no noticeable difference until three years out. But I've only been vaping for a year...

Yes those are intelligent suggestions from someone who has done these things I can tell. All my mods I have built and they all have soldered battery packs with usb charging except for a Raptor which is series but I am considering swapping this to a balance charger system. It is very easy to do these things with the right info and tools.
