All regulated
mods (except some obsolete mods like the ipro and buzzpro, which use inefficient linear regulators for step-down only) use switched-mode dc-to-dc converters. The output signal of a switched-mode converter is a pulse train, i.e., a PWM signal. PWM is a description of an output wave, not a type of regulator.
The pulse train (PWM) output from the regulator may then be smoothed (like on a Provari or a
dna) by filters and buffers so that you see a nice itty-bitty flat output signal, but it is still a switched-mode power converter putting out pulses of current.
(Didja see how I got itty-bitty in there somehow?) And they may output a nice high-frequency signal, like Provari's 800Hz, or a choppy low-frequency signal, like the original Lavatube and Vamo's 30Hz pulse.
Mods advertising DC-to-DC output or DC-DC Mode are just spouting marketing gobblety splat. They are all DC-to-DC unless they are plugged into the wall without a wall wart, like your coffee maker or hairdryer.
