Believe it. I had a 808 that exploded in the charger. It flew across the counter and welded itself to a metal bowl before exploding into a fire ball that blackened the wall. It was just that powerfull.

THe story states that it knocked out several teeth and a portion of his tongue. I was unaware that pen style batteries could explode with that type of force.

The article states that " impossible to tell the brand of the electronic cigarette" and yet "This incident has been reported to a national database, so any possible patterns can be identified."

How will they form a pattern without details - such as the brand?

I do hope he recovers speedily though, that must be terrifying and so painful :(

Terrible !

But it seems as though it would gradually get very hot before it exploded. If you had it in your hand, as opposed to in a charger, you should have enough time to
react. I wonder if this is true or not ? If so, why didn't he toss it ?

Also, I wonder if it was a battery with a vent or other protection.

P.S. I later checked and maybe it CAN happen very quickly. This reference:

http://pubs.acs.org/cen/science/85/8551sci1.html

says that the internal temperature can rise to 200 degrees C in ONE SECOND under some conditions. Maybe faster than one could react !

More checking showed that hundreds of li-ion batteries in cell phones or computers have
caught fire over the years and that manufacturers have worked to reduce the problem.

Ah, life is full of dangers !

I would imagine they can Id the battery type at least....and as more incidents happen, tehre's more data collected.

Poor guy.. Trying to better his health and this happens..

They can identify it by having the man write out what the brand was on a piece of paper when he's stable enough to do so. Or they can look up his purchases over the past few years and see what vendor he bought it from and go from there. It would benefit a lot of people to know which brand this happened with so we can avoid it, and the manufacturer itself can ensure this doesn't happen again.

In the meantime, don't use anything that acts wonky and/or hot and remember, very few of this incidents have ever been heard of. Far more failures are caused by cell phones. And cancer from cigs. I am honestly horrified for this man's pain, but perspective is needed.
And the news likes Dirty Laundry better than full information. I would like a full story, but have my doubts that we will ever hear one.

It does look like the same incident referred to on post #5 of this thread. The link there should be read by all ECFers imo---it's a rolygate sticky "must read" btw.

There was another thread about the accident here on ECF a couple weeks ago. The guy was reporting in and had a friend/associate post for him on ECF as he couldn't from the hospital. Quite a guy! It tells what device he was using and what batteries. It was a stacked battery (6 volt) situation running at high volt. When I last looked there was a possibility that they were not the correct rated batteries for this type of use---but I don't know if that panned out. I haven't seen the thread again nor tried to search for it.

It's a good time to review the use and care of batteries -- and what safety features to look for in a mod or pv.

This is a small part of my reasoning behind selling off my mods and sticking to Ego's. I really wish the news would revise their report to state that he was using a mod with batteries that aren't manufactured strictly for use with them.

The incident you mention had quite a few things going on:
1. Mod with no vent holes
2. stacked batts
3. low quality batts
4. freshly charged batts (maybe overcharged)
5. very low resistance atty/carto

When you put that many negative variables together, it's like asking for it to happen.

Even eGo and cig-style KR808's have been known to fail spectacularly. Usually, it's a case of overcharging the batteries and leaving them on the charger. They make great bottle rockets!

That's normally on the charger though, right? I haven't heard of one exploding in someone's hand? Maybe it has? I dunno, I still feel safer with batteries manufactured and intended for vaping.

This story looks like it is might be new news, current. Something happened Monday evening, story reported on Tuesday, multiple other outlets tying to the story on Tuesday and today. Then again, there are enough similarities on the surface that it also could be the same incident, just that the reporting was delayed by a month, hard to tell either way. Have to see if someone knowledgeable with the other recent story, from a full month back, can confirm whether these are the same or separate incidents. Since this new story lists the person's name and town, it should be easy for someone to say that either they are the same person or different.

I sent a PM to ECF admin asking if they can poke at it.
