...most people experience initial improvements, myself included.

These questions are mostly directed at lung-inhaling, previous smokers, vapers

I would like to ask and find out the effect of being a long term vaper ?
Have you noticed and bad health effects from vaping at all ?
Has your health significantly improved (like if you had asthma or some other health issues) or maybe even declined (I hope not) ?
Do you go to doctors regularly and what do they say ?

I prefer facts.

Thank you :)

I would like to ask and find out the effect of being a long term vaper ?

Outside of too much time spent on the forum and too much money spent on stuff that never worked, no real cumulative effects I can see.

Have you noticed and bad health effects from vaping at all ?

Yes. But nothing irreversible.

I am also not looking to debate anyone on my experience, but while vaping has drastically increased my lung capacity from my time of smoking, based on my experience with 6 months or so of not vaping, it's still not nearly as beneficial as being smoking and vaping free. For me, vaping does affect my overall cardiovascular and lung health in a less-than beneficial way, but really only during the time (about an hour or two after) of vaping. What I mean is, and for example, when I work out, as long as I don't use vaping as a silly pre-workout supp (LOL), I'll be fine. But if I try to workout after a vaping session, it will decrease my output, i.e., no personal bests after a vape session (and these are not "light" workouts.) All in all though, it's just something to be cognizant of and easily managed, unlike smoking where even with several hours off, the evidence of the habit shouts from the chest!

Note: I vape high nic liquid (24 mg to 32 mg, so when I speak of vaping, I am speaking of vaping high nic. Obviously there's a difference in the effects of vaping nic strengths--that's why there's choices.)

Has your health significantly improved (like if you had asthma or some other health issues) or maybe even declined (I hope not) ?

Maybe this is not exactly what you're looking for, but it's what is coming out of my fingers right now:

After I stopped smoking and began vaping, I began hitting the weights pretty seriously. I'd always been a skinny-fat, so fully clothed I never looked as out of shape as I was--but, man, I was really out-of-shape! Couple that with smoking and the other lifestyle I lead (ahem, the Rock'n Roll diet) I just never could sustain any of my body-recompostion efforts.

While being a vaper (and moderating when I vaped), I went from around 20-23% bodyfat (BF caliper test) to over the course of a year or so being around 7-9% (that was a cut; I maintain at about 10%) with only a loss of about 10-15 lbs overall weight (respectable muscle gain to counteract the loss of BF on weight--the before and after pics are not for this forum. LOL). Granted, that's due to intense working out, complete restructuring of my diet, and an overall mindset change, but vaping started it all and it likely wouldn't have been possible without vaping. How's that?

For me, smoking was always the gateway you-know-what, so when I stopped smoking, I stopped drinking, partying and leading the I-don't-give-a-bleep lifestyle. It also felt good to finally begin waking up on my own couch. LOL

Do you go to doctors regularly and what do they say ?

I don't know about "regularly," but since I have health insurance now, I do go. I remember when I smoked, once the doctor listened to my chest with a stethoscope and later in the appointment said, "well, since you are a smoker..." I remember thinking, "damn! He can hear that?!" Two years ago when I went to the doctor (different doctor), he went through all the same motions of that previous check-up (including listening to my chest and molesting me *cough*) and at one point in the appointment made reference to me being one of the few patients he had that was actually a non-smoker. This was not based on any previous forms or anything, it was based on what he did not hear in my chest. I ended up telling him about vaping and he was all ears!

As far as oral health, because of my former lifestyle, I did experience some bone loss (20%+) and unfortunately, no amount of non-smoking will correct bone loss or gum disease (only deep cleaning can do that, and unfortunately, bone loss is gone for good). However, all my numbers now check-out in the "healthy" zone and I miss no days flossing--at all! I am not endanger anymore of being a young dude with false teeth. Smoking didn't necessarily cause my oral health decay, but my lifestyle as a smoker did (drinking, smoking, partying, never flossing, never seeing a dentist). In a nutshell, once I began vaping I embraced caring about my overall physical health, and for that, I can say that vaping ushered in a new life of health consciousness. Strange considering these clouds in my room.

I'm a previous smoker, >53 years, 2.5 PAD when I started vaping. Have noticed NO BAD HEALTH EFFECTS FROM VAPING AT ALL. I've been diagnosed COPD. My primary was thrilled when I told him I'd switched off tobacco to ecigs. Then, was thrilled again when I told him I'd quit ecigs. My health is better since I quit tobacco and started using ecigs. 6 months after I started vaping I became concerned I might be vaping too much cinnamon, (imagine that from a tobacco smoker). Decided to leave the cinnamon out of my next DIY eLiquid batch. A couple days later I discovered I'd also ACCIDENTLY left the nicotine out of that batch. Decided. . .who needs it! Took me another two years to work my way out of the "Hand to Mouthy, Oral Gratification thing". Feb 6th was my last vape. Now, I have no urge to do either. Good Luck with your quit(s). JMHO

Cheers,
otrpu

Vaper for 2 and a half years, previously a smoker for 30 years.

I have'nt noticed any significant negative effects. I can get dried out at times, just need to drink more water. On occasion I'll get some phlegm type build up in my throat, but that's about it.

I used to cough all the time when I smoked. I'd also get bronchitis quite regularly, but that has stopped since I've been vaping. Overall, vaping has been pretty positive for me. I generally don't bother with doctors unless I'm broken or bleeding.

EDIT: I completly forgot got about my VG issue. VG does cause me to get a tight chest if I vape a high percentage VG juice for extended periods of time, so I just don't do that.

Hi meanckz!
I smoked about 25 years, have been vaping for about 2, and quit cigarettes completely about 1.5 years ago.

I would like to ask and find out the effect of being a long term vaper? The wallet feels it. It starts out expensive, but in the long run it's much cheaper than smoking. I don't stink, and there aren't ashes and burn holes.

Have you noticed and bad health effects from vaping at all ? None.

Has your health significantly improved (like if you had asthma or some other health issues) or maybe even declined (I hope not)? Improved, I would say. I go hiking almost every week, and I seem to breathe easier doing it. (I started hiking around the time I started vaping, so improvement would be expected anyway, but I'm sure at least part of it has to do with not smoking.)

Do you go to doctors regularly and what do they say? No, I don't.

congratz otrpu, I'm not sure I'll quit vaping any time soon, but then again, I hadn't decided to quit smoking when I started vaping, so who knows :D
thanx for the answers every one ... and @bacc.vap I'm not much for docs either
@Mr.Mann waiting for 'later' :D (no hurry)

I do hope this gets a bit more traffic tho

I'm coming up on 4 years vaping.

My health has improved. The positive changes were noticed almost immediately and continue as positive after nearly 4 years (not waking up coughing - not feeling out of breath or out of energy when performing normal activities etc etc) Yes. I have asthma. I have not needed my rescue inhaler but once since about 2 months after I stopped using tobacco. That one incident occurred when I had contact with something I knew I was allergic to that had nothing to do with vaping or smoking (horse dander, in fact).

I have noticed nothing detrimental to my health from vaping with the caveat that I have a very mild sensitivity to PG and therefore use 100% VG juices.

I do not visit doctors often now. Before I stopped smoking, my visits were fairly regular. I have only casually discussed my vaping with my primary physician and she reacted positively.

that is great and I'm very happy for you and your improved health, and this is the kind of response (positive or negative) I was looking for ... thank you

Saving spot for later....

Nice tactic! I’ll have to remember that one.

Joint and muscle pain, Weight Gain, these are the two biggest issues I have encountered.

I’m intensely interested in the joint/muscle pain. Do you attribute it to the weight gain or vaping?

My smoking history is in my sigline. Been vaping 33 months. Results:

- systolic and diastolic BP dropped 15 points each
- O2 absorption level went from 92 up to 99
- five year old chest x-ray exposed the beginnings of emphysema; new x-ray four months ago, "lungs normal for patient's age (66 yo)"
- dramatic oral health improvements (my dentist is amazed)

I used to suffer major chest colds at least once a year. Since vaping, I've only had two days of a runny nose in late 2011.

2 years -

no more chest pain - wheezing - coughing - constricted feelings
no longer run out of breath or even breath hard when exerting myself.

had sinus/ allergy symptoms and nasal congestion most of my life, everyone chalked them up to simple allergies - has complete disappeared now.
no more coughing, hacking, gagging when i get into a steamy shower.

being able to take full deep breaths has returned. even on the heaviest days of chain vaping the next morning clear as a bell with zero congestion.

externally i see improvements to my skin and my hair, i cant say i was thinning out but man is it thick now and shiny too , several people have noticed. nails are nice and pink underneath and seem to grow faster.

for what i have gained, for being able to finally feel good again after 35 years of 2 pad, i will take whatever risks may be posed by vaping and the unknowns with regards to wick materials and ejuice ingredients. to sit here today and have a hard time remembering what it felt like to be a chain smoker is worth it.

I've been vaping for 3 and a half years. I smoked for around 30 years or so. The big thing I've noticed is that in those 3 1/2 years, I've only had one cold and it was very mild. I used to have one or two colds every year.

Another thing I noticed right away.. my chest didn't hurt and feel tight in the mornings when I would wake up and yawn.

I wasn't a heavy smoker though.. not the last few years. I could make 3 packs last a week.

I've been at it for a bit over 2.5 yrs.
I wasn't a really heavy smoker (1pk a day at most, sometimes only 1/2pk).
I did feel a tightness/burning in my lungs with deep inhale when I smoked, and I no longer have that. And overall I suppose I feel a little better. No problems at all with vaping.
I see my doctor every yr., and I check out fine every time. He was happy to hear that I quit smoking, but wasn't especially interested to hear about vaping. His attitude was pretty much: 'yeah, whatever, as long as it works'.

Light vaper 2007 to 2009; thanks RN4081.
Moderate vaper 2010 to 2012; thanks CE2.
Heavy vaper 2013 to 2014; thanks twisted 30GA kanthal and cotton ball.

My 2014 lungs feel clear and I breath easy. I can detect no ill effects from responsible vaping. Nic was around 24 in 2007. Nic is zero to 8 in 2014; mostly zero and 4. I can switch to no-inhale if I find it to have any benefits over inhalation. I'd not be surprised if unflavored vaping turns out have health benefits.

just turned 36, was smoking since I was 13. was at least 1.5 PAD when I found vaping- slow decrease to zero cigs over almost 2 years. been vaping for almost 3 years total, though only exclusively for like 9 months.

my mom jokes I was born with an ear infection, and I've suffered chronic upper respiratory and sinus problems for most of my life. since I've been vaping full time, I did flare up cysts in my sinuses before the summer, but those have died down and no bronchitis, no pneumonia, no ear infections, hardly even a cold this season, and the flu I got wasn't all that bad. this is a vast improvement over my life thus far! also, no cough in the morning, no unexpected wads of phlegm as I'm talking.

sinus arrhythmia isn't as pronounced either. BP is better. migraines are a rare occurrence. teeth are better.

aside from tummy issues in the beginning getting used to juice (and bad vendors), I've had no issues with vaping. I'll be bold and say I know vaping has increased my life span.

I have been vaping for close to 3 years. Direct lung inhale (I am trying to change that up because flavors are so much more yummy if I don't do that!)
Have you noticed and bad health effects from vaping at all ? Just the direct effects of dehydration when I don't drink enough fluids.
Has your health significantly improved (like if you had asthma or some other health issues) or maybe even declined (I hope not) ? Hmm, I didn't have any major health issues but I definitely can smell, taste and breath better. Oral health improved.
Do you go to doctors regularly and what do they say ? I do not go to the Dr. regularly. I've only been once and he was pleased that I had quit the stinkies. I don't know if I mentioned vaping to him, as it was quite a while ago.

Just over 3 yrs for me since I started vaping. My smoking tapered to zero during the first 4 months, the end of a 30 year PAD habit. Similar experience as others have posted:

Benefits:
- BP well within normal range, down from borderline hypertensive.
- Substantially better dental health. Was approaching a crown and/or root canal once a year. Only one small filling in the past three years.
- No longer feel like Pigpen (Charlie Brown) with a cloud of tobacco stink following me around. Skin, clothes, car, etc. The first and second digits on my right hand are no longer permanently yellow.
- No more hacking up lung butter for an hour or so after waking up. Sorry that's gross, but also amazing what you put up with when smoking.
- My physical fitness has improved 100%. I never was sickly or terribly obese. However, any attempt at exercise was curtailed by limited breathing capacity from smoking. With that gone, exercise is a lot easier and better fitness is a product of that.

Disadvantages:
- It's still a habit. I just haul around a different one now. Not really a disadvantage, but need to be mindful of battery state and juice level before going anywhere.
- Occasional chest fluid/drainage. Again, only a minor nuisance as the expectorate is clear and a lot looser than the tobacco deposits ever were. So really an improvement from "really gross and uncomfortable" to "just somewhat annoying at times."

So, going into my 4th year, I would sum it up as everything being generally positive with downsides being substantially less than anything experienced during my smoking years. I really didn't want to quit smoking, which is why I was never successful with cold turkey or wellbutrin. This let's me continue to enjoy the habit and act of smoking, without the bulk of the nasty downsides. When people ask when I quit or the like, I honestly answer "I didn't really quit, I transitioned."

I am working with my doctor to figure out the joint and mucles pain. Feels like a lactic acid issue so I have been changing my juice to exclude PG, also had a suggestion to add potassium supplements. The weight gain I have gotten under control and have lost 10 lbs and have another 10 to go. I am just changing my diet to compensate.

I don't have a final answer on the real cause at this point.

Nice tactic! I’ll have to remember that one.
