I was at a bar recently at the u of c before a concert, having a beer and a vape. The bartender got all up in my biz. He pointed at me and was all "NO...YOU HEAR?...DO THAT AGAIN AND YOU'RE OUT OF HERE! I don't care what you think the law is. Put it away...NOW!" I did and was like "be cool man...see it's in my pocket" then he said something else dickish that I can't recall.
now I know proprieters of businesses have a right to not let people vape in their establishment,( which I totally respect) but come on. Its not cool to be a huge d-bag about it. Just sayin.

Agreed hon. Unfortunately, some people like that bartender are just really angry, rude, or both...and show no interest in amending their ways or attitudes. Maybe you can meet with the bar's manager or owner & politely explain to them what it is you wish to do. They may give you the green light to vape there, & tell the idiot to stop giving you grief. It may not be very mature...but I imagine it'd be pretty damn satisfying to vape away with glee, next time you saw that guy behind the counter.

Otherwise...if it was me, I wouldn't frequent that place anymore. I don't enjoy giving patronage or money to a business where I'm made to feel unwelcome, or get treated like crap. We should all treat each other nicely, but you particularly expect civil treatment when you're a paying customer. I understand he didn't want you to vape in there, but geez - he didn't have to be an ... while conveying that. Especially since you were doing as he asked. And he still chose to be rude.

Fortunately, stories like this one are usually the exception rather than the rule. 15 days shy of a year & I still haven't had anyone flip on me for vaping. Maybe I've just been lucky, but people around here seem to get it & take it in stride. Anyway, happy vaping hon & thanks for sharing.

Well, it sounds like the bartender was being a monumental dickwipe about it but, who knows? Perhaps the owner has been on his case about customers vaping? Perhaps the owner is afeared for his liquor license and has instructed the the staff to crack-down hard on vapers? Quien sabe?

I think smokers who see people vaping think they can smoke if you can vape. After all, it all looks like smoke, doesn't it? It's all the same to them.

I shoot APA 9-ball in the Providence area. Everytime we had visited a new bar, I demonstated and asked if it was OK to use the device inside. In all but one case I was given permission. Going on 18 months of this I think we are up to 12 or 15 places where it is accepted. The one case where I was told not to, I was given the quoted reason. So I stealth when I go there.

Asking permission and educating the curious is IMHO the right way to approach this.

The more that sell, the easier it will be on us. I actually like the term "fake". It's a fake cigarette, truthfully. There's no tobacco and the vapor isn't smoke. The only match is the nicotine. It's more like a nicotine inhaler than a cigarette. If people want to think it's a fake, then all the more reason not to outlaw it in public.

There will always be people who are conditioned to see "smoke" and have a "fake" smoke allergy attack. Those are the ones I hate to run into. If it looks like a duck ...

One of my friends buddies had kind of the same reaction once. When were all out I was using my 808's and he started to yell at me (he always hated when I smoked around him) and stopped mid-sentence and said "hey that smells fruity, what the hell is that?" once I explained he was all for it.

I am a bartender and me, the owner as well as a fellow co-worker vape. We do it openly in the bar, most people already know what we are doing and we explain it to the ones that don't, but when the bar is busy and full of drunks, it is better to just go out of sight and avoid the hassle, when people see us blowing smoke (vapor), they think its OK to light up. Drunk people lack common sense and easily justify any decision if someone else is doing it too. Though I don't condone the way this bartender handled the situation, perhaps he is a bit sick of dealing with drunk people and their shenanigans (trust me, it gets old quickly, takes more patience dealing with them than it does a group of 4 year olds!). Did he even know that you were vaping, or just flipped out the second he saw you blow smoke?

Did you ask first? Did you tell them "hey look, it looks like smoke but it's vape...is that okay?" If you didn't, well what did you expect? You puffed something that looked an awful lot like smoke, and if he gets a ticket for that his bar will be shut down. What would you like him to do. Gee sir you're smoking a cigarette that could shut down this bar and put dozens of people out of work, should I check to see what kind of smoke it is?

That bartender was a d-bag indeed, definetly take your business elsewhere, many establishments would welcome you with open arms. Maybe you should talk to the bars owner and ask HIM for permission to vape inside, then next time you see that bartender you can tell him to call his boss.

Ive yet to come across anyone who has told me not to vape on the premises, and I vape in some pretty controversial situations and places from government buildings to banks and all sizes of business. Just the otherday I was vaping in superstore frozen meats section and an employee walked by me, sees my cloud and goes "I hope thats the good stuff ;)" and keeps on walking, then another shopper came up and was like "hey thats a vaporizer aint it? I thought those don't make smoke". So basically everyone thinks im doing even more prohibited things than I actually am and they still don't even care.

I get the same thing. People see "smoke" and want to yell fire. Then, they find out that it smells really good. I like to vape Malty Toffee and RY4 around people like that.

I still vape covertly in public places. Occasionally, someone will see me and walk up to see what I'm doing. I was in a Huddle House (like a Waffle House) and the waitress said, "Is that an electronic cigarette?". I answered Yes, and she called over the other waitresses to see it! They are mostly smokers and wanted to know all about it, where to get one, which one to buy, and how much it costs. When I told them that they could buy a starter kit for less than the price of a carton of smokes, and they would spend a about the price of a carton per month on average for juices and accessories, they were impressed. I wrote down some links for them to visit.

I can see how bars could be difficult, because people who drink want to smoke, sometimes even if they don't do it except when they drink. After a buzz, they get argumentative.

I haven't had too many issues yet with my pv in public, there was one occasion where I was in Square One mall and naturally took a puff. Security seen this and quickly yelled out to me "Hey, hold up for a sec" and came over. As a fellow security guard, I gave him my attention and awaited what I knew he was going to say, and he said it "you can't smoke in the mall, you have to leave now." I had a half full water bottle with me and asked if I could demonstrate that what I had wasn't a real cigarette, he was interested in seeing me show him, especially when he realized it was an ecig. I took a big pull without inhaling it, and exhaled it into the bottle and quickly capped it. He was clearly able to see white smoke at the top and water below. I shook the bottle, and then showed him, the white smoke was completely gone and only water remained. He thought that was very cool. Check Square One as a place I can vape.... though I still double inhale my pulls there to minimize the vapor I exhale
