Hai :D

I visited my grandfather for a couple of hours. When you can get him to stop complaining about the food at the assisted living place where he lives, he is great to talk to about old times  He was born in 1917…. he's seen A LOT! And he remembers so much! Not just from the 'old days' but current events too. He really is amazing! I would say "I hope I can be that sharp when I am his age" but, I'm not even as sharp as he is NOW

Then ran a couple of errands and went to visit MIL. She is doing pretty well. Seems to be getting stronger :thumb:

Now I am home, in my jammies, on my couch, eating a bowl of tater tots :D

Tater tots. :?: I do like them but I've never just ate them by themselves.

Sometimes I can't imagine living through what I have lived through. I sure can't imagine what it must have been like to live through the changes he has lived through!!

Love tater tots  And, I'm too lazy/uninspired to fix anything else

Yes, he has seen a lot. He talked about drawing water from a well (to water the farm animals) when it was so cold the rope would freeze after you drew it up out of the well. Also talked about plowing with mules  And him and his dad taking watermelons into town to sell. They were poor and there were a lot of them (I think 14?). It was a hard life.

He talked about how you had to store up food/supplies for winter. I asked him if they put stuff in the stream to keep it cold, or if they had an ice house. He said 'you were lucky if you had either one'. He did talk about keeping milk in a 'stream branch'.

I vaguely remember when I was little, going to my great-grandparents and drawing water out of the well and drinking it with a ladle. Isn't it funny the things that stick in your mind??

If I had tator tots, I might actually fix some for supper. I don't though and I'm not going to again just to get them!

I was near a couple of fast food joints on my way home. I talked myself out of getting it, because it is so fattening. So… I 'treated' myself to tater tots  Better than a burger and fries, right??

I love talking to people about their past, and their memories of an age gone by. Of course, I can entertain my grandkids with the same kinds of stories. No internet??? No video games??? No cell phones??? They cannot imagine life without....just like we cannot image life without a refrigerator, or running water, or electricity. That is why those stories are so fascinating....it was a completely different kind of life than we have had.

I was lucky as a kid. Lived in a house in town that had electricity and an indoor bathroom. As far as I remember there was always a refrigerator and stove too. I do vaguely remember getting our first phone! Big old thing on the wall. Now we carry these little things around with us everywhere.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they had neither. I mean, they were 'dirt poor'. Paw Paw had to quit school in 4th grade to help out around the farm. He has always felt like he isn't 'smart' because of that. But, he learned so much in those early years he is smarter than a lot of college graduates of today. Not to mention common sense, which so many people lack no matter the amount of schooling they had

I like tater rounds better than tater tots....we have those quite often. A lot less interior potato, and a lot more outside crunch. Probably more calories too....but they are baked so not too bad. (even tho they were fried when they made them.)

I agree! We actually had to get up to change the channel  We only got 3 stations, and had to adjust the antenna to get those to 'sort of' come in! Your grandkids probably think we were living like cavemen!

Had to do that too. For a long time, we had a TV set that the had no back cover. Had to press the thing on the end of the picture tub just to get it to work.

Hubs buys "healthy" tater tots  I've never looked at the package to see what makes them 'healthier'. I just know they must be, or he wouldn't buy them :glare: So, the other day our son made himself a HUGE BOWL of them (I bet it was at least 4 servings) and I fussed at him about how many he made. He said "yeah, but these are the healthy ones that dad buys" Hubs would have had an absolute fit if he had seen how many he fixed. Of course, I didn't rat him out :D

Dropping out of school to help the family used to be so common.....created a work ethic that no amount of schooling can produce. And I think lots of the old timers are smarter....they learned about things in life that really matter. The stuff mandated in today's schools....the real learning is not there. Mostly because the government has poked its nose in. :glare:

Oh yes the control thing. Seems to be spreading all over too.

And enough said.

LOL.....and remember having to adjust the horizontal and vertical buttons....the tv pictures used to roll, and would need to be adjusted. :)
