Sea, if you have a lot of trees around, then when the leaves fall, they will clog up the gutters. I have to clean mine in the fall, because there are a lot of trees around here. I just scoop the leaves out of the gutters, so they will be clear and the rain can run down them to the drain pipes. Do you have drain pipes on your house, Sea? If you do, then you must have gutters.

Oh, I think a lightbulb went on upstairs, lol. I have a tube that runs down my eaves. It pounds water down on the ground in one place and makes an indentation in my yard. Why am I supposed to clean them - doesn't the water wash them clean?

Aloha Sun!:)

Hi Sea! Hi Lisa -- I keep reading about an injury to your shoulder. What happened to you?
Sea -- if there are screens atop your gutters they will stay relatively clean, especially if your house is not overshadowed by trees. Do you get lots of debris on your roof, stick leaves, etc.? If not, your gutters are probably pretty clean. If you don't notice what looks like a rain shower coming over the side of the house your gutters are working fine.

Jerry, how do you clean them? Do you climb up on the roof? Uh oh shucks, am I supposed to be doing something I haven't been doing?

If you have gutters, they are supposed to be cleaned once in a while, depending on how much stuff gets caught in them. I climb on my roof for mine, but I've got gutter guards on the high side. If you don't clean them out, the piled up leaves could clog them and water would could get into the eves.

I see y'all are in the gutter again lol. Gutter guard that works: a wedge of UV protected foam that allows the water through but not debris. My neighbor has had it in his for two years and just blows off the roof and surface of gutter guard (whatever doesn't wash off/blow off). I want some but they are rather expensive due to shipping.

I got the metal ones, like a screen. They don't stop fir needles though, only broad leaves.

Home depot/ Lowe's sells this black plastic tube with holes in it - cheap for a huge length. You can buy something like that -- or a smaller piece and gouge holes in it. Attach it at the bottom of the downspout where the water comes out making an indentation. Lay it out along the ground, mark the edges with your shovel, and then dig a trench that gets deeper as it goes along and lay it down in it. Cover it back up and you should find that you no longer have an indentation cause by the rain. I had to do this on one side of my yard because it was washing the soil away down the hill. I ran about 40 feet of that tubing so the rainwater comes out down in the woods.

You have gutter. You can get a metal/plastic tray from Home Depot or a slab of stone and put it under that downspout (the pipe that drains to the ground). That will help reduce the impact and direct the water away from the house if you use that tray. You don't want water near the foundation too.

Or, you can get something like this, ask the Home Depot folks.
