Love my Phoenix rebuildable atties, wondering how switching to SS would alter things.

I've done tons of research on how to go about using it and where to get it. I more or less just don't understand the benefits as I have never used SS as a wicking material before.

I figured I could either go about just putting a bit of silica wick along the bottom of the atomizer to help the juice stay in place and build a vertical wick or I could do a u-bend in the stainless mesh and do a horizontal wick that way.

Any ideas? I suppose I'm trying to justify why I should or maybe might want to experiment with different wick materials.

The silica-wick - I presume this is what most arrive with - sheds and fractures and.. Well, IMO it tastes godawful. Even if folks just switched to cotton they'd get a better taste, (although you don't dryburn cotton and it does seem to get crispied down the road).

If you are used to silica, I'd try cotton - the cost is zero. If you've tried cotton variants, then yeah - I love these SS wicks I jammed into my Nova and my modded Vivi tank. The latter _is_ genesis-style, if not a Genesis Product.

Note: cotton is claimed to "mute" flavors a little, (I'd not really disagree) and Stainless doesn't add or subtract at all to flavor. With SS, my issue is mostly getting the right ohms/coils, (one night I was trying with 5ohms on my Puck ;-)

I am not sure when one must replace a SS wick, since I just rinse everyone each week. Worst case with SS and myself is having to recoil after a short, which is normal for nichrome anywhere. My next SS wick might be a Hybrid - with cotton down the center of SS, (I use cotton twine right now), but I dunno why I'd bother.. These darned ECF guys already started talking about #500 mesh SS and are getting me all interested again!

IIRC, DiscountVaper just started carrying some DIY stuff, (just nichrome, I think); MadVapes has just done the same, and I got my Kanthal (brand) and Nichrome and SS mesh from SVC - stormy's is.. Interesting.

I'd just pick up the several mesh-sizes and roll a few to try. However, I've yet to find a link to anyone with a definitive size to cut to roll.

Good Luck!

If you've done all the research on it the only thing left to do is try it and then you'll know.

It depends on the Atty. For instance Dan said he uses 35mm x 35mm for the GTUS. The build instructions for the Genesis LV was 35mm x 22mm I think. That's a starting point and you have to find what works for you. Depends on the size of the hole you're putting the wick through and the height of the coil chamber. The recommended starting point is definitive, what you actually do is sometimes different.

Phew! My phoenix-clones arrived tonight.. dryfired, rinsed, evercleared, fired and loaded.. I think my skullcap landed past the kitchen.

They only hold about 10-12 drops, (which is a bit disappointing), but they are small and simple. The screws used are silly countersink-type, rather than a panhead. Coil is neat but wrapped way, way too tight. I dunno, for $9 they seem OK for use at home. Certainly will try cotton and SS by next week.

I like the phoenix with SS mesh wick. It's a much cleaner taste, and if you want to change flavors, just dump the old flavor do a quick dry burn and put the new flavor in (I use this for testing all my new flavors). If this is your first go with SS mesh, it's a tight space to play in so don't get frustrated if you get hot spots on the coils or something isn't set up right. I wouldn't worry too much about the size of the wick, make the part that you're rolling around 20mm I think is what I used, then you can cut the top off to size. With this set up it's like a genesis with a 12 drop tank, so it's a big problem if you ever plan on carrying this with you, because it must stay upright. There is nothing to keep the juice in the phoenix, since there is nothing in the bottom to absorb it.

I have bought a phoenix atomizer and a viva nova smok rebuildable and absolutely love the phoenix with 400 ss mesh! The viva nova I have yet to get it working right yet but definitely try the ss mesh with kanthal or nichrome but I would prefer the kanthal!Hope this helps?

Finally cleaned enough junk off the bench to roll some more SS - scubabatdan-style. The Nova works great again, and the Phoenix got some cotton in the base and the old SS wick and coil set vertical.. Wicked head-popper.

In anticipation of this event, I picked up some jewelry "crimp beads" yesterday, and MAN - while super tiny, they make a massive difference in handling the nichrome/NR. Further, I used a nice little brass bolt to wind the coil, so it was a comfortable slide over the wick and a trivial twist or two to tighten down the entire coil.

I love it when a plan comes together.
