I’m pretty new to the e-cig world and have a boat load of questions. Back story first.
I was a pack and a half a day smoker and my main motivation to quit was cost. A pack of premium smokes around here is $4.50 or so, making $1 off deals and such a manageable option. Taxes are going to take a hike again here shortly though, bumping the cost up by $1.25/pack, and I just can’t handle that.
Anyway, about a year ago I bought an Encore (808D-1 3.7v battery) e-cig kit out of curiosity from a local tobacco shop. I didn’t know jack about them. My wife and I used them on and off for a few weeks and pretty much forgot about them. The flavors that came with the kit (tobacco and menthol) didn’t taste anything like it and it was almost impossible to get an appreciable amount of vapor out of them. Flash forward a year, I’m fed up with smokes and ready to quit, so I pick the ecig back up. No point in buying a new kit since we have two good batteries, so I head down to the local smoke shop and pick up new Encore branded cartomizers, $15 for 5. I got the sampler which included vanilla, strawberry, grape, menthol and tobacco. The three flavors I hadn’t tried were good and I got hooked pretty immediately (seems like they changed their juice for menthol and tobacco too, though the tobacco still sucks). I haven’t smoked a cigarette for two days, and in the last week have had a total of maybe 15 cigarettes. I have two packs of 5 filled carts coming from V4L, after that I plan to start filling my own.
I’m going through about one 16mg cartomizer a day, cost is definitely lower than buying smokes at the corner store, but I think I can do better. I plan on giving up the nicotine portion altogether, starting with 0mg juice as soon as I get this all figured out. I’ve never seemed to have much of a difficult time kicking that addiction, but I’m so psychologically addicted to the act of “smoking” that it’s a real ..... to kick. I’ve done a lot of research on refilling, and think I can manage that with little to no issue, but my big concern right now is finding a battery / cartomizer / tank I want to stick with (808D-1 or eGo is what I’ve narrowed it down to) and a reputable vendor to buy from. I can see putting down around $100 to get set up with the system I want to stick with and feeling good about the decision, which brings me to my questions.
What vendor(s) carry quality products at a reasonable price with decent support?
Cartomizers & Battery: I know there are a handful of different cart types, and that’s about it. I know there are some that work better for 808D-1 and others for 501 and others that won’t work well for either because they’re too power hungry or the resistance doesn’t meet the voltage in the middle. I’m completely lost and have yet to find some sort of complete list of differences that match resistance with voltage, and voltage with battery type. Here is what I’m looking for:
I know this is getting a bit muddled and long winded, sorry about that. On carts again, is there a major difference between normal carts and tanks with internal carts? Are there benefits to using tanks + atomizer over reusing cartomizers or tanks with cartomizers integrated?
Is there a resource available online that offers some sort of list with a comparison of all these different things? Cart types and compatibility with batteries is really what’s giving me the most trouble. I don’t want to sink money in to this just to buy incompatible parts and spend more to dig myself out of a bad purchase.
I’m a tech guy, I build computers all the time, but this e-cig thing just seems complicated as hell. A whole new ball park.
Thank you very much.

- A lasting battery. My current e-cig lasts about 8 hours at my current usage. I don’t plan to increase usage, but more than 8 hours would be nice.
- Cost of blank carts / options. I don’t want to be stuck with one style.
- Cost of battery. Depending on capacity I’d like to get at least 2 batteries and chargers. This way my wife and I could both have one of whatever I choose to get and a backup of what we currently have. I’m not sure on compatibility of chargers with different battery types, it seems like every charger has a different rating for mA out, and it’s one of those things that I haven’t seen explained much at all on any vendor’s website.
- Flavors, size and cost of juice. Starting out I’d probably rather get smaller containers of juice in a handful of flavors, but eventually I’m sure I’ll want to go up to 30ml or higher. I haven’t really found a decent vendor that offers a scope of different sizes, I’ve mainly been looking on V4L who offer 7ml and 30ml, but it seems to be at disproportionate prices. Maybe I’m just too frugal, can’t get something for nothing =).
