Since I started vaping I've been using 18mg juice. Until recently -- say, a few weeks ago -- everything was hunky dory, no problems, was loving it (except for some of the cheap juice flavours I was getting). However that changed when I found out the hard way that 18mg was too strong for me -- at least, too strong for the amount that I vaped, certainly, and I started feeling the effects of too much nicotine running through my system.

So I decided to order a low-strength juice. None of my usual local haunts carry anything less than 11mg, so I went with Velvet Vapors, who features a 6mg juice. Picked a few flavours in a 3-pack 30ml sampler, it arrived in about a week and a half, which was good, and they even threw in a little 5ml bonus sampler, which I thought was awesome.

The flavours are most excellent -- the java isn't the best I've had, but the rest is fantastic. However, they're light. I expected that of course, but when I draw enough to give me a bit of throat hit, the hit is sharp and it makes me cough. Enough so that I can't vape it.

I did end up mixing the coffee flavour with some leftover coffee from couple of other mostly-used-up bottles of coffee flavoured stuff I ordered elsewhere at 18mg; I was able to cut it down to about 9mg using 50% Java from Velvet with equivalent coffee flavouring from elsewhere, plus the 5mg French vanilla latte bonus sampler they sent me, so it's lower-strength. The sharpness is still there but it's dulled by the other stuff so it's not so bad and I can vape it carefully without coughing much. It's still stronger than I want but better than what I was vaping before. I did the same with the Virginia flue cured, which I mixed with other leftover generic tobacco flavouring to mix it down to about 11-12mg. (Fortunately Velvet's flavourings are pretty dominant so the new mixed stuff still tastes very much like the original stuff.)

Now, I ordered what Velvet refers to as the "velvet blend" which I think is 50/50 PG/VG. I thought it would be a nice smooth hit, and was curious to try it. It's very thick -- in fact, the French Toast flavour I ordered was so thick my eGo XL has a tough time wicking it up fast enough. (It's literally almost syrup-like, enough to almost be fooled into thinking it was pancake syrup.) Absolutely amazing flavour, but also sharp throat hit. I have nothing to mix with it that is complimentary so I'm leaving it for now.

My questions are:

1) Does the reduction of nicotine content uncover a sharpness in the PG or VG that is normally smoothed out in the presence of more nicotine?

2) Is it the PG or VG that's giving me the sharp throat hit? (Put another way, if you were to vape one or the other straight, which be more likely to cause you to cough?) Or could it be some other ingredient? I should point out that the Virginia Flue Cured doesn't produce as sharp a throat hit so could it perhaps be some other ingredient?

3) What should I order next time, straight PG or straight VG? I want something with a throat hit to at least partially replace what was lost from the lower nicotine content, but I want to avoid the sharpness that makes me cough. Is it even possible with such a low nicotine level?

Help is appreciated.
