Lori, may I ask? Did you adopt her from a rescue organization?
We did, Dachshund Rescue. In fact, when I called to inquire about her, she was on a bus that was about to leave, headed to your state. The woman had to hurry to make arrangements to pull her off the bus. There had been no inquiries for her here locally, and there were over 30 in NY state, so she was gong to be transferred to a rescue there. (Just broke my heart no one wanted her. She's truly a joy.)
We had a mini dachshund mixed breed growing up. I always wanted another because they are such a devoted and loving breed. I was looking online at Pet Finder, at puppies actually. The least expensive I found from breeders were $600.00. I just couldn't make myself do it. I kept going back to the picture/post of her. Really, she picked me.
Breed specific rescues are a great way to get a dog, sometimes puppies. Unless you go to a shelter. I'm emotionally unable to go to a shelter. I want to take them all home.
They told me that because of her age, 4 years old, she was $200.00. I want to say the normal price would have been $250 or $300.00 That amount included spaying or neutering, testing for heart worms, and all shots. (Really just a break even price if you ask me.) She had also had dental problems, and those had been already taken care of and paid for too.
They do come meet you and check your house to make sure it's suitable. A fence was required, but we already had one.
So, there are some stipulations. If you're in a big city, you may not have to have a fence, but we're in a rural community, and you had to sign a paper stating that the dog will not be left outdoors/chained, or outside for longer than maybe 20 minutes if the temperatures are under 45 degrees, because of their short hair. So basically you need to want an inside dog, if you want a dachshund.
The great thing was that we could take her for two weeks, and if it didn't work out for us, or for her, in case she didn't warm up to us, they would take her back, and refund our money.
Also, if anything ever happens that we can't care of her, we are to call them, and they will come get her. I think it's really cool.
Most breeds have their own rescue organizations in case you're interest, but would like a different breed of dog.
Sorry if that was TMI.
