So glad I found this thread. I wanted to make a 5v Nicobox just to try out high voltage vaping, but I didn't want to spend the money on batteries and a charger if I didn't ultimately enjoy it. So I've been reading up all night on regulators and resistors and diodes and circuit boards for usb charging and all that shizz. I was in way over my head. Never occurred to me that I could bypass the battery part of it so easily.

Thanks very much for posting this whiskywill! Now I'm only gonna have to spend like 2 bucks at Radioshack tomorrow. Already have a high quality usb extension cord that I never use so I'm set.

Edit: With some regulators coming in from ti, I'll probably end up getting batteries to make more mods anyway. I'm just glad I can test the high voltage waters for cheap. I just hope either my hub or my pc will give me the necessary amperage.

E2: Just decided not to go with usb because of all the potential problems with drawing current and the resistance of the small gauge wires. Just gonna use a wallwart I have laying around. Still, thanks for bringing the simple passthrough concept to my attention. Its so obvious but my head is clouded from so much info.

thanks guys havent been on this tread in a while i wanted to clear some stuff up so first off u dont need a ti regulator all u need is a wire that plugs up to ur usb tear that up get ur red and black wires and conect red to momentary switch and then the black to the ground of ur atty conecter and from the momentery switch connect to possitve of ur connecter very simple lol ive made a couple now one with a many jack danyels bottel looked cool as f#@k but wanted to make anothere box mod so tore it apart to lol the usb mod will be more volts the a reguler batt but all depends what its pluged into when i plug it into my xbox 360 feels like way more then my laptop and then i found a 5v wall adapter that gives that feels abouth the same so xbox 360 seems to be around the 5v maybe a tiny bit less comps probly around the same as a reguler usb passthrough but i dont know ill by a meter soon and do all the test and since i know fursure that the wall adapter is 5v ill do a giveaway on my new and improved usb pass through looks almost the same as the detanotor but with a very nice push button almost the same as the nicostick one well till then have fun modding

Yeah, some computers won't give you all the current you need without a device that actually talks to the computer to request more current. So I just made one out of an old power supply for a print server that gives me 5V 2.5A. I just finished it like a half hour ago and this thing is awesome. Thanks for showing how simple it is to make one.

just want to attest to the fact that a regulator does make a difference with these.. i didn't use one in the first one i made (didn't have any then), and after getting annoyed with the wibbly wobbly performance i decided to make another--with the TI 5V regulator.. and after checking them both with the multimeter: the pt w/out a regulator varies anywhere from 2.7-5.2V while the pt with the regulator hangs at a steady 5.1V.

and i see that y'all are saying there're already vids posted on how to put one of these together, but also that some ppl are still having problems.. so, i'm planning on putting together a walkthrough of how to make one of these for some friends of mine that live *waay* out of town, and i'd be more than happy to post it here as well if anyone needs yet another reference to look at.

oh, and ps: why exactly would anyone come into the MODDERS forum & recommend that we "just buy this" when the whole point of these threads is to help each other make things? and really, the whole reason i got into modding is because i bought one of those cheapo "standard" PTs for $9 (+ $6-15 for shipping depending on where it's coming from) and it performed exactly like something that i'd paid $9 for...that is, it worked for a month and then shorted out. i fixed it once, and when it broke again i scanned the threads for info, went to Rat Shack and spent $10-15 on parts that i've since been able to turn into 2 PTs and 2 box mods (one 3.7V and one 5V).

anyway, bleh.. sorry if that last bit was overly combatitive or douchey, certainly not trying to rub anyone the wrong way.. just assumed that this being the mod section would negate anyone having to ask how come we don't just buy this or that, you know? i assume most of us are here 'cause we'd rather do a little more than just click another Buy Now button ;b

all the best, guys. vape on.

usb powered by my brand new gaming rig (Toshiba Qosmio).. and the attys vary since my passthrough uses RCA connectors (901, 801, and 510). the variance is prolly due to the cheapo switch that i used in that first one i made.. everything i've built since my first nicostick has used either the same switch recommended by Nicowolf or something with at least the same ratings.

Most computer usb outlets are limited to 5 volts 500ma, The reason they put a battery in-line with the commercial passthroughs is to take up the current drain when in use. I had a Friend of mine fry his mother board by continually putting such a large load on the usb port. a 510 atty will consume up to 1.7 amps.
I made a 5 volt dedicated power supply that delivers a steady 5v up to 6amps so it is able to keep up with the demand.
Just my 2 cents

Actually driving a real Joye 510 atty at 5V@1.7A will only give you about 4V, if that.

Ok, so i finally made my 510 USB passthru, but havent put a switch on it yet.
I'm simply tapping the wire together while i enhale.
Gotta get off my lazy but to RadioShack to pick up parts.

But I'm worried i'm frying Attys. IN the week i've had it two attys have gone bad.
I'm powering it using my 24" LCD Monitor Powered USB Hub.
One was used previously on batts, but the second on was brand new.
ANd only lasted less then a week.

What am i doing wrong????
