making a passthrough from a dead manual battery

I know I have seen a thread somewhere in this forum on how to make a passthrough from dead manual batteries, but I can not seem to find it. Could someone please help me? First off I just can't seem to figure out how to get the battery apart and of course I have no idea on the wiring. If someone could give me a step by step I would greatly appreciate it.
