I was watching a tornado video on YouTube this morning, and suddenly the video started bogging down badly, so I quit the video, quit Chrome, unplugged my router, ran Onyx and restarted my Mac.
When it came back up I got a pop-up for ZipCloud on my screen. I'd never heard of that, and I knew I'd not installed it, but there it was. So.... digging around I find ZipCloud in my Applications folder, and drag it to the trash and empty the trash. Then I find out on Google that ZipCloud is also called JustCloud, and sure enough JustCloud is in my Apps folder too, but this one is a lot harder to get rid of. Dragging it to the trash doesn't work, and it's files are invisible to Finder so you can't find them and delete them. Same with ZipCloud.
After much searching online for a solution I got MalwareBytes, which found the files for the unwanted programs I could not see in Finder and I removed them all. It seems apparent that they were installed by that video I was watching on YouTube, somehow. I run a very good ad blocker and never clicked on anything but the videos.
As it turns out both ZipCloud and JustCloud are programs with a bad reputation and keep very bad company in the form of malicious malware associated with them. They are snuck onto people's computers in a variety of ways, like fake Safari updates. Well if these were legit software they sure wouldn't have to sneak them past you, and it seems they have found a way to sneak them onto your computer using YouTube videos. This is not good.
