If the threat of "bad press" elicits more emotion than a fellow human being having their face or a body part blown off, then the politics of vaping itself has become more important than the human beings it is supposed to serve, and this community has lost it's way.

Its easy to take "cognitive shortcuts" because it allows us to feel removed from pain and tragedy -----"tragedy at a distance" is so much easier to take. Perhaps calling people stupid, or blaming them for bad press, is just a way to make it even more comfortable for ourselves?

You know what true stupidity is? To me it's not thinking things out. We know the press sensationalizes stories, the news singles out the bad news. But-----each of us has control over how we put this in context.....and we can also control our reaction. That is how we can use our intelligence, and not be stupid. ;)

I am asking you to question your *reaction*. Does calling this vaper stupid and/or blaming them for "more bad press" qualify as a thoughtful reaction? To my mind, no.

How is this different than an ANTZ saying to a smoker dying an agonizing death from lung cancer: "You were stupid---Tough Love, Baby! the world is better off without you."

Well let me take you over to the The Burn Center at Arkansas Children's Hospital and you can say that to some of the parents, as well as their children who are the patients there, as well as the nursing/medical staff, too. (Hopefully they won't be as coarse or I suspect your head will hurt when they toss you out onto the hard sidewalk.;))

The "Tough love" you speak of isn't having part of your face blown off....no matter how it happened.

What would I consider a normal human reaction to an event like this? Vapers saying they are moved to write this fellow vaper a get well card.

Instead, it's always about how the injured person didn't aptly "serve the cause" and they are blamed for putting vaping in a bad light, on top of being stupid......(even though that wasn't their plan.......that's why these things are called *accidents.* )

I would rather people know that vapers are people, as fallible and fragile as all human beings, a responsible but also caring group of people, who possess the kind of tolerance we expect from others.
I'm posting from a phone, so it isn't easy to break a post down the way you did so bear with me here.

He chose not to research what he was getting into. Simple as that. Why should I feel sorry for him? I am glad that it blew in his face instead of him throwing it into a child's lap when it started to get hot or something like that. It could have been worse, and innocent people could have been hurt.

Why would I need an excuse to feel better about myself? I didn't burn my face. I did my research before getting into vaping and started with a vw mod. I didn't put others around me at risk because I was too stupid or lazy to grab my cellphone and Google it...

You said it yourself in your third paragraph: true stupidity is not thinking things out. A little thinking and that situation would have never happened. I know, your a modern man with feelings, but that doesn't excuse him from putting those around him in danger with his lack of forethought.

My reaction is wrong because I don't feel sorry for someone that potentially put his family and others at risk? Sorry, but we will have to disagree there.

He isn't dying, that's a big difference. He is going to heal up enough to go on with his life. Maybe he will come away with a life lesson, maybe not.

How coarse I choose to be depends on circumstance. If a parents neglect got a child hurt, I will tell them off, maybe even beat them down. Wouldn't be the first time I got arrested for beating the crap out of a person who caused harm to a child. Been there, done that and a jury found me innocent. Twice... Just an FYI, nobody has ever tossed me out of anywhere.

You are right, that isn't tough love. It was good luck that an innocent wasn't hurt. He will live, and hopefully learned something.

Why would anyone want to write him a get well card? "Thanks for not taking responsibility for your actions and throwing us into the spotlight. We really appreciate that..."

Google would have saved him pain and medical bills. Why should you, me and every other vaper end up one step closer to losing our rights because of his mistake?

What does that have to do with anything? I'm glad he is alive and will recover. I just hope he learned something from this.

Another note; reactions like yours are the reason stuff like this happens. You have to baby and feel sorry for anyone that gets careless and hurts themselves. If people like this were held accountable for their actions, people would try harder not to put others at risk with their stupidity. I think he should be charged with wreckless endangerment and attempted arson. Punish him for his carelessness, make an example out of him and others would think before they did the same. This nanny state bs is why stuff like this happens as much as it does. Just because he got hurt doesn't mean he didn't potentially put others at risk as well. Too many people are lax when it comes to common sense because they will get sympathy. Wounds heal, and if it gets them 5 min of fame... It's worth it to them.

That's why I don't have a smartphone.
If mine gets warmer than I think it should be, it won't be near my face. I've seen LiPo batteries blow before. Cellphones have batteries and any battery can be dangerous. My old one got thrown in the sink to cool off a couple times. Not in water, just a flame ......ant place for it to do whatever it was going to do. May have just been the screen getting warm, but it's better safe than sorry.

I got my first "mod", a mechanical mod, in 2012. I did a lot of research and was an avid reader of ECF. There were not many regulated mods available at that time (ie Provari and Darwin), and the ones that were available were twice as expensive as mechanical mods. I thought that I had a pretty good handle on how to be safe with a mechanial mod.

After about two weeks of use, I had a battery explode in my mod. The fire switch had become compressed in the pocket of a pair of pants that were hanging in a work locker. The battery over-discharged, vented in thermal runaway, and caused a small fire destroying my pants and my mod. It could have been worse.

The battery was a protected Trustfire ICR battery; the one that the mod manufacturer recommended be used. At that point in time, unprotected IMR batteries were just coming onto the market. Common wisdom among manufacturers and the forums were to use only protected batteries in mods. The so-called experts were saying no one in their right mind should consider using an unprotected IMR battery in a mod.

How time changes perceptions. Now protected ICR batteries are considered to be obsolete. Only safe chemistry unprotected IMR batteries are recommended for mod use now. I take a little of the credit for this becoming so. After my incident with the exploding battery, I educated myself about batteries and their chemistry. Against the common wisdom of the time, I explained to the readers on ECF why this new IMR chemistry was safer (safer chemistry) and better suited (higher amp output) for personal vaporizors. It took a couple of years of preaching, but now the common wisdom is to use IMR batteries instead of protected ICR.

Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or protected ICR?

I feel the same way about the LiPo chemistry batteries being used in most of the high wattage regulated box mods today. LiPo is not a safe chemistry, and depends upon the protection circuitry of the processor to prevent a fire or explosion. It appears that a lot of these box mods have inferior chips or protection circuitry because we are seeing an unusual number of auto fire incidents, mods that are catching on fire or exploding, things that we never saw in regulated tube mods using removeable IMR batteries.

iStick 50 watt exploded

My point in this post is that we shouldn't prejudge the victim of this thread. We really don't know what mod or batteries this person was using. We don't know how much the victim educated himself about mechanical mods or batteries. We shouldn't judge without the facts being present. Accidents can happen even if we are doing everthing "right".

You are making an assumption that the guy involved has done no research, or is a newbie, or is pushing his equipment beyond the "safe" limits.

There are several more reasons why this could have happened:-

Defective Mod
Defective Battery
Defective Atty

It is not always obvious that there is a problem.

Do all the research you want, all you can do is lower the risk of something like this happening to you or somebody you know.

Potentially we are all one button press away from the same kind of injury.

Personally I think that it is better to try and educate people on the ways that they can reduce the risk as much as possible.

Saying that somebody should have done more research after the event helps nobody.

Blaming them for the regulations that will come in will help nobody. (by the way the regulation has much more to do with tax revenue than harm reduction)

Education will help. If it stops even one person getting injured it will help.

Every time something like this happens it gives those the people making a decision on regulation more of an excuse to threaten a ban.

@Baditude and @Layzee Vaper

He went to the press. That is the mistake that makes him a non-vaper/enemy to any vaper. Simple as that. You know, to me that's the biggest problem. You can say that none of it is his fault all you want, but when he brought the press in, I can't see him being anything but a problem. We all know that feces can happen, but you don't give fuel to the enemy. Did you go to the press when you mod burned Baditude?

The guy in question went to the media so he wouldn't have to go through the effort of finding an ambulance chaser lawyer. I'm sure one found him...

so you are advocating on banning mech mods?
while we are banning stuff why not motorcycles? you can fall off you know, we should only allow cars
I vape only mechs and don't need a regulated mod, they are perfectly safe for me

mech mods and our batteries are powerfull little devices the problem is that people don't think there is anything lo learn, they think ithey are just plug and play, so as I said, a little warning or awareness info on every mod on the market could minimize this a lot

I for one am NOT in favor of banning mechanical mods. I am however in favor of banning 510 hybrid top caps. Hybrid mods are fine, just not with a 510 connection.

A guy in another thread so continuous just means for hours on end and pulse means anywhere from 30 to 90 seconds cuz these batteries were designed for power tools. Idk how true that is. But if thats true but if it is. We have way more headroom on these batteries than we think. Considering most people wouldn't pull on a e cig for more than 10 seconds max
    Lessifer covered the pulse rating.

    The continuous rating needs addressed.

Hours on end will never happen.

A 20 amp rated 2000 mah cell should be able to hold 20 amps for about 6 minutes.

Anything longer and you risk pulling the voltage too low and damaging the cell permanently.

There's 2 amps of capacity in a 2000 mah cell. Running it at 20 amps will dissipate it's useful capacity in 1/10 of an hour.

I don run that high of amps myself. I stay within reasonable range and use a samsung 25r in a regulated mod. I was once fascinated with cloud chasing but it seems dumb to me. Now someone was telling me to buy a higher capacity battery for more battery life. But idk whether to do that or give myself that headroom in a regulated device. I was looking at getting lg he2 next or sony vtc4. Both reasonably priced cuz you get a couple for 15 bucks. Which do y'all recommend?
    What device?

    What's your preferred vape specs?

    Watts? Resistance?

Do you change your vape specs at all?

Without info, vtc4 because it gives you the largest margin to work with in amps for safety.

With specs, you might be able to get much higher capacity and charge your batteries less often.

There aren't a lot of comparable uses for our batteries. They are indeed used in power tools and cars and laptops and whatnot. Which these discharge ratings are intended for; a battery delivering power to something at a certain rate. This rate being lower than the speed the battery heats up at - at that specific drain.

However, none of these applications do what we do: Use the battery to heat up one end of the tube it's sitting in. Closest would be flashlights. From what I gather, those heavily into flashlights preach safety and Ohm law as much as we do. A hot metal tube is not the ideal environment for a battery to keep its cool.
    Even moreso.

There's more than one Mooch logged onto those forums nearly at all times, too.

I'm running an ipv d2. Running nickel builds anywhere from .05 to .15 and mod 30 joules usually. I usually run kanthal from .4 on up to .8 and run it anywhere from 35 to 55 watts. Sorry that was kind of a vague answer. The mod maxes at 75 watts and .2 ohms

beckdg hits it on the head. This why i don't understand why some folks think
even if you can draw 20 amps from a battery for six minutes that translates
to taking 72, 5 second puffs and say its safe. Its clear no one designing battery
operated devices would want to have a device with a 6 minute battery life.
Running this kind of amperage constantly through discharge and charge cycles
is not safe. It significantly degrades the battery life and the integrity of the
battery itself. Can the battery out put 20 amps? sure. Is the battery made
to operate at 20 amps normally? No. Ask any R/C car fan how many burnt out
battery packs he has. He will show you the box he hasn't gotten around to throwing
    away yet.

    Vtc4 Is your best bet.

Though, if you never (even accidentally) go over 55 watts, any of the 20 amp or better cells from lg, Samsung or sony will do just fine.

Why should all responsible people be restricted because of a few?

You do not know what's best for me.
    I do.
If people actually educated themselves before using mechanicals we would not see any of these stories in the media.

I'm for common sense and education, not controlling others with restrictions and bans.

Just an observation. First film shows the guy in a hospital bed with tubes everywhere. News crew filming.

Parents call the news in? Or it just happens that they were having a slow day and listen to the police emergency scanners?

Highly doubtful the poor guy contacted the news himself.

The beginning shows pictures of him in the hospital bed, not film. His parents probably took the pictures, or he got copies from the hospital's in-house photographer. There is no film of him in the hospital anywhere on the clip. Camera crews aren't allowed in hospitals without an escort by the hospital's media relations officer. They can't just listen to scanners, walk in and start filming. The guy says in the video he wants the case publicized. The only video footage of the guy is at his home...
