Most trucker drivers have been going through this for the last 10 to 20 years, well before Obama was ever heard of. Yes as vapers we are doing a healthier thing than smoking, but it will still take years (if ever) for our bodies to fully recover from the harm WE did. Why should people who never smoked have to pay for our stupidity.

I passed by not using nicotine products for 5 days. They do test for cotinine though which is what nicotine turns into. Fortunately i believe there is almost always some level of cotinine in someones system, and that of someone who hasnt smoked 4-5 days typically isnt enough to set off the trigger.

edit: I am a non tobacco user, with excellent health. They should give me discounts for mountain biking and exercising frequently, not tax me for consuming nicotine and alcohol. I dont drink coffee/caffeine products, should be a discount for that too

And most insurances will do drug tests if you are injured on the job, if it shows nic after faking their test like that could get you flipping the bills yourself.

I do not agree with drug test ether! Its one thing if there is a suspicion, but we all know this test was designed to get out of paying bills! If the test shows the guy is on it right now I could see a little validadey to it honestly who cares what some one did yesterday or 2 weeks ago it has nothing to do with them getting hurt today!

Actually, I believe that the most expensive group for insurance companies and others is the elderly, especially those with Alzheimer's. As our country's elderly population grows at an unparalleled rate, we should be terrified at the costs ahead. The average cost of Alzheimer's care is close to $7000 a month, not including prescription medicines. Some say that by age 85, half the population will be afflicted with Alzheimers, and as the Baby Boomers get to that age, I cannot even fathom what lies ahead. Those with risky lifestyles actually save the rest of the population money if it is indeed true that smoking or driving red sports cars shortens life significantly. No pension/social security payouts for them. No long term care in a nursing home.

Isn't it ironic then that low doses of Nicotine like the patch has proven to help reduce both the onset and the symptoms of Alzhiemers. It looks like it is also beneficial with Parkinson's as well as promoting capillary growth in diabetics.

"I would like to know what actually is the number one killer in America?"

Number one killer anywhere first world is heart disease.

And despite conventional wisdom otherwise, we dont really know how its caused. We cant give it to animals without altering their genes (ie, feeding them "fatty foods", doesnt work). Those with altered genes get heart disease no matter what you do. Basically heart disease is still a mystery. (which makes the anti-fat thing, yet another "moral" crusade)

Number two after that is road deaths.

I find it fascinating that people fixate on loads of minor risks, yet no one cares about road deaths, despite that being well up on the charts. If people were genuinely concerned about tangible and real risks, wed be coming up with new alternative modes of transport that weren't intringsically fatal. If that were true, it would be a high priority. Clearly no one gives a crap.

Theres still alzheimers causing aluminium in our tap water. Still folks dying travelling at high speed in metal boxes. Strange things in our food. Poverty. Homeless people starving. Compact fluroscent light bulbs and mobile phones mildly causing cancer in proximity. Wars. Cancer, aids. Patients living in pain without proper medication (like that medicinal herb some goverments deny, not that id touch the stuff but ive met people who could use some). The general poor design of modern society. All sorts of issues that could actually use some effort, or thought, or talk.

But thats all _way_ too much effort, and way too thoughtful.

What people really want to do, isnt to prevent death, reduce harm, or do any real good - but to fear and hate things.

To have some token or gestural idea in their head. To less than half-.... it. To go on moral crusades to create the illusion of purposefulness in their lives. And just as commonly, even just to hurt, pursue or blame someone else, who is socially acceptable to hurt.

Theres probably nothing in the world more _socially and morally_ dangerous (and to some degree physically) than these people, the people who point fingers, and go on witch hunts.

The poster asks why a never smoker should have to pay for illnesses caused by smoking. I ask why I should have to pay for illnesses caused by being overweight when I am not? Why should I have to pay for injuries sustained while riding a motorcycle or skiing when I do neither? Why should I have to pay for illnesses blamed on eating the wrong foods? The answer to all of these questions is that we live in a world that bundles risk and spits out an insurance cost for groups. If we eliminated the risk factor, those left with no insurance would be a huge majority. Then, what? It is not about smoking or eating or riding motorcycles or participating in risky sports. It is about the fact that human beings cannot live prescribed lives for long. We have a spirit that longs for individualism and loves to take risks.
