I usually hold mine down for 3 or 4 seconds and not much longer than that. I'm sure some people go longer than that, though.

I think?? that how long you can hold it down may depend on what type of ecig you have. But I am not certain of that. I have the EGO and there is no issue. I will get more than enough vapor before i would even think I have held it down too long....

I usually hold down the button on my 510 atomizer for about 7 seconds, maybe more.
Never had any problems and my atomizers last forever.
Of course, it depends what voltage you are using, which you didn't say.
I am running at a full 3.7v with my 18650 batteries.

About 2-3 seconds. I vape like I smoke. Draw a mouthful then inhale. I'm guessing those going 4+ seconds are inhaling directly.
usually about 5-6 seconds. i'm using a 510 LR atty at 3.7v (18650 batt). i only do mouth inhales as well.
I start out short (2 – 3 seconds) on a new atty, but when it starts to go cold at the end of its life I hold it down for as long as I can keep up a draw.

That direct inhale for 7 seconds sounds like a crack pipe technique.
+1, I vape like I smoke crack, in a dark closet until I pass out lol!
Rofl everyone at work calls it my crack pipe. Wait till my syringes arrive. I get everything delivered to work and can never wait to open packages.
I will generally pulse my button as I vap I heat the atty inhale then repeat never have any trouble I don't just hold it down

Whatever it takes to get the amount of vapor you prefer. As long as your atty is wet and you are getting good vapor, 3-5 seconds is about average. If low vapor is the problem, change to some juice with a VG content, 50/50 or higher on the VG side. Pure PG needs a lot a heat to make clouds of vapor. 100% VG won't have as much taste and aroma as juice with a PG content but it will surprise you how big the cloud is when you exhale. The most common and most popular mix is 50/50 according to a poll on this board.
