Hello all. I am a physician working on an article on e cigarettes and the true question every one wants to know is vaping safer than smoking.
Also how save is vaping compared to smoking. I can not make any medical recomendations on this site due to the litigenous nature of our society but As my study of vaping elicits data I will share the findings. So far I have been impressed with the data I have seen on this site and the factual nature of the PG data from the epa. I do have some comments for health saftey.
if you have a child at home and are using bottles of e-liquids the lethal dose is 10mg for a child so please use child proof bottles.
the lethal dose for adults is 40-60 mg of nicotine and we all know it is rapidly absorbed thru the skin or nicotine patches would not work. If you spill a lot of liquid on yourself you could die.
make sure that on you e cigarette device that there is no possibility of comming into contact with a sizable amount of liquid.
I think there are some things that can and should be done to maintain the availability of vaping in the us
first there needs to be standardization of the liquids in chemical composition. the producers of the components need to get together and decide on the composition. It will be much easier to do safty data analysis if there are not 100s of different formulations. you will need this to fight the FDA. Ruyan has some data created by Murry Laugesen that looks like it is a good place to start for standardization.
From what I have seen so far I do see e cigarettes as a potential benifit and I think that the are likely going to be proven to be much safter than cigarettes. I also suspect that big tobacco sees this also and will spend a lot of money to destroy e cigarettes. The best way to fight this will be with science, research, and documented proof that e cigarettes pose a better alternative to regular cigarettes and have a public health value in terms that realistically most people addicted to nicotine can never quit. If my assumptions are correct and e cigarettes are around long enough to study I think we will see a reduction in all cause mortality amoung nicotine users. Do not forget that reg cigarettes in addition to carcinogens have carbon monoxide and e cigarettes do not.
Any one who has links to good credible research data please post since the more I have the better.
