I picked up a killer Reo on the classifieds and went to clean out the residual juice smell (whatever it was smells really good but I don't use flavors typically). Ultrasonic bath and a rebuild kit. I haven't yet rebuilt an old style 510 and I got to scraping out what I thought was sticky juice build up but I think it was actually an adhesive directly under the 510 connector.

So, is it a trip back to Rob or can I salvage this?

I went through the same thing. I think it was the remains of an old rubber gasket. I scraped mine out and installed the rebuild kit and new gasket that came with it. I do worry about mine though as I never really asked about it and my center post in the 510 moves around a bit. It was my first reo with the old style 510 so I'm not too familiar. Hopefully some one more useful will chime in.

Yep - looks like you've cleaned out the 510 insulation (as well as the gasket) which stops the 510 from shorting against the body. It's a Rob-applied thing, so to the spa it should go. You might want to consider having a new adjustable ss 510 installed rather than getting a re-installation of an old 510.

As I couldn't tell from the photos, you might want to consider getting gold contacts at the same time (if you haven't got them already).

Exactly what Papa said. I did the same thing to my first REO. The pics that you show are what the gasket and 510 pin fit in making it snug and keep the juice from leaking onto the contact pin. The new SS 510 knocks it out of the park as well as the new nipple. It is worth the spa time.

Yep, I'll be getting a new 510 connector then. I was going to eventually, but I figured I'd use my old style rebuild kit for now and get a little use out of it. Ahh well, as soon as I stabbed into that adhesive I knew I'd screwed the pooch.

time for a 510 upgrade, is that spernos? If so amazing deal on that buy.

It was indeed, great deal. Sterno took good care of it. My first anodized, I really like the finish. And my only non-SL. The sound the door makes is insanely satisfying, not sure if that's the finish or the solid door... So thanks everyone, for the confirmation that I should stick to my day job!

Don't be to hard on yourself. Instead of thinking you messed it up, look at it as you did some of the prep work for getting the adjustable 510 installed. You got to participate in upgrading it :).

Hehe nice one.. I'm sure they will forget all about it when it comes home!
