Measure coil temperature externally

I am new to TC vaping. I saw on djlsbvapes that he shows what a particular TCR value reads at temperature wise for a lot of mods. My question is how could I do this on my own? I have looked at laser pointer heat guns and thermocouple meters but am unsure if either would work to measure a coil. Anyone had any luck with doing this without spending a ton?
