In other news, ha, ha. The human conditions shortsightedness and complacency know no bounds.
Model rocket hits, kills man at Southern California Boy Scouts event

Ban ALL model rockets NOW!! Don`t be a pin cushion for a model rocket, just say no to the model rocket. And whatever you do, don`t look up you Id*&t!

I am so sick of this, story should read: "inexperienced ecig user attempts to use an advanced device and pays for his complacency with a missing tooth."

LOL, I used to drink, and I have a few missing teeth. Ban all Alcohol NOW!

You're lucky, I use to drink and I'm missing ALL my teeth! ;) Got scars on my nose & eyebrows too

Yes, +90% of which also probably involved mech mods.

    Only a mech mod.

    NOT TRUE!
The vast majority of e-cig accidents have involved Ego style PV's.

The problem is that the mechanical with a sub tank type topper has become the modern Ego type starter kit.

Just a couple comments to add:

While they don't specify in what length of time, the article states "According to the most recent report by the U.S. Fire Administration, 25 e-cig explosions have been documented in the United States." I would be curious how many of those 25 incidents involved mechs and/or DIY coils.

I agree with TJ. Most of the PV fires and explosions I've heard about involve eGo type hardware.

I normally only read these threads, but thought this would be better suited adding to this thread then starting another. Guess you could say this one "hit a little closer to home".

I 'hit the button and it just blew up': Columbus man almost loses an ear in e-cigarette explosion

And stepping up onto my soapbox, I have pretty much always disliked the term "e-cigarettes", but now wonder if any one term should be used for all the various devices used for vaping. How many smokers shy away from trying a pen style setup due to lack of details in headlines and articles like this?
A line from the article that really caught my eye!

Companies should “make it safer so it doesn’t happen to somebody else … where it’s next to their ear, even in their mouth,” he said.

So the word getting out in the media is that "Companies" should "make it safer"! Nothing about what his set-up was! It was the device or the battery! Nothing about what he did or didn't do properly!

"Bruhn and his family are contacting the battery company, Efest, and the e-cig manufacturer, hoping that action will be taken to make the product safer. Efest’s website says the company is based in Guangdong, China, but the phone number listed under contact information is an “invalid extension.”"

Nothing about what he could do to be safer! Because he doesn't know or understand what went wrong!
"I HIT THE BUTTON AND IT JUST BLEW UP!"

I'm curious. I want to see the setup of these devices. eGo doesn't mean anything to me (furiously googling now). I was assuming "hoping" these were all just battery holders with a button and people were building their own coils. Meaning that the mods with the mechanics - MINE SPECIFICALLY would be considered safe.

When you went shopping for the "best price", you had no idea what CHEAP battery cell, or mosfet, the manufacturer used (or what charger they provided with it)

So, I guess I shouldn't be curious how many nor should the media? How many are "most"? 13? 24?

About 50 made the news, so i would guess over a hundred that we didn't hear about. (there were like 10 reported in one town in the UK in about a weeks time)

Good grief, Charlie Brown! The quote from my linked article:

"According to the most recent report by the U.S. Fire Administration, 25 e-cig explosions have been documented in the United States." I would be curious how many of those 25 incidents involved mechs and/or DIY coils.

For some strange reason, the parameters of the quote are changed to include "I've heard about", "50 made the news", a guess at some number that nobody even heard about, and "10 reported in one town in the UK". Would the reaction have been the same had I added " I would be curious how many of those 25 incidents involved egos and/or regulated mods with factory coils."? I guess I should just refrain from having any curiosity in the future.

Would like to know what coil head he was using. The lowest I see is .15 for Kanthal and .12 for Temp Control. Even using a .15 on a single 18650 is not even cool. Don't they mentioned these sub-ohm RTA's should be used on regulated high wattage mods?

    TF-T3 (triple coil)
    •Patented Triple Coil Head
    •High Quality Kanthal
    •Pure Taste
    •Cloud Vapor Chasing
    •0.2Ω (40w-130w)

    TF-Q4 (quadruple coil)
    •Patented Quadruple Coil Head
    •High Quality Kanthal
    •More E-liquid Delivery Efficiency
    •Work with 100% VG
    •0.15Ω (40w-140w)

    TF-R1 RBA
    •Single Coil Head
    •Durable Stainless Steel
    •Bigger Deck
    •0.85Ω (Pre-installed)

    TF-R2 RBA
    •Dual Coil Head
    •Durable Stainless Steel
    •Bigger Deck
    •0.25Ω (Pre-installed)

    TF-N2 & Air
•Patented Nickel 200 Dual Coil Head
•Temperature Sensing Capability & No Burnt Taste
    •0.12Ω (400°F-600°F)

    TF-T2 & TF-T2 Air
•Patented Higher Resistance Dual Coil Head
    •Lower Power & Cooler Vapor
    •1.5Ω (20w-45w)

    TF-Ti
    •Patented Titanium Dual Coil Head
•Temperature Sensing Capability & No Burnt Taste
    •0.33Ω (450°F-600°F)

    TF-S6
    •Patented Sextuple Coil Head
    •High Vaporizing Efficiency
    •0.4Ω (30w-100w)

Wouldn't it be nice to get back to the time when adults doing stupid things took responsibility for being a stupid adult rather then blaming the object of their stupidity it's something that bugs the hell out of me about society today always looking for a way not to call an idiot an idiot. Yes this guy got hurt but he got hurt because he didn't bother to do even basic looking up about what he'd purchased or how to use it and the press blames the ecig, yeah because that mod knew it was going to bought by an idiot paired with a stupid tank for a mech mod and just happily laid in the box till Einstein got it home and the inevitable happened. This guy would have had an accident with anything sooner or later just our luck it was now and an ecig.

Hey, curiosity is a good thing :thumb:

If you get some actual numbers, please post the info. I would love to know if my opinion is accurate or not.

This thread and others like it is exactly why ill never buy a mech mod

Safety, it shouldnt be optional and it should (ideally) survive end user stupidity

Plus i think that those who buy shiny high end metal tubes for stupid
amounts of money for tube status are dheads....

At AUD$70+- for a decent VW/TC mod, with all the safety built in (sorry Kanger Nebox, not you)...yes please

should be a no brainer, arent we using these devices for harm reduction after all,
why abandon rational thought when it comes to the devices

#BanShinyHighEndWankerTubes <- this may happen with reports like this anyways

VW/TC mods...because you shouldnt have to worry about your device becoming a pipe bomb
