I'm really new to mechs (just picked up my first, a Magneto), and mods in general (I have an MvP), but here's my opinions so far.
Mech's are sturdier and, in my opinion, usually better looking than their VV/VW brothers. They can also be more versatile, however this requires you to be willing to tinker, or to go the extra mile in terms of clearo head/carto purchases.
If you vape at 6-8 Watts, stock low-res coils will vape pretty much just as well on a mech as on a VV/VW.
If you like to vape at 9-15ish Watts and want to use your favorite carto/clearo you can buy a kick. Suddenly your mech is a VW device.
If you want to vape at 20+ Watts, sub-ohm that sucker and cloud chase (after doing your research and being safe!).
Or you can build your own coils and all of these pretty much become mute points (after doing your research and being safe!).
The majority of VV/VW device will allow you to plug an play any device you want as long as you're looking for a vape lower that 15 Watts. So if you don't want to build your own coils and you don't want to buy a kick (~$45 I think), a VV/VW device will be the best option.
The battery drop off is another problem. However, speaking from my own experience, the voltage drop off from a battery over time isn't a HUGE deal. It's noticeable, but it probably won't ruin your vape, at least not until it hits ~3.5 volts in which case it's time for a battery change anyway.
Plus, there's something innately valuable about knowing how something works or making it work how you want it to. There's a level of hobby-ness that you can get from a mech that just isn't there in a VV/VW mod. This is both a pro and a con. If I knew someone who just wanted to quit smoking I would never EVER tell them to go mech. It's way more work than they want. But, if there's someone who collected pipes, or rolled their own cigarettes, a mech and an RBA might be the only thing that makes vaping more attractive than smoking analogs after the first few months. Going mech, I think, goes hand in had with starting a hobby.
